Most of the members of academic committees reviewing and selecting grant applications usually are involved in standard research on laboratory animals and are hard to convince of the value of conducting research on “exotic” animals. One reason might be that the #OneHealth concept of a common health denominator is not so widespread. Considering all the projects reviewed in this paper, it took years, sometimes decades, to get an appropriate funding, including for the marine worm project on Arenicola marina which is the most advanced in practical clinical application as indicated above. Last week, a delegation of EU-LIFE attended the #EUResearchArea Conference and the 26th #ERA Forum meeting. Marta Agostinho, EU-LIFE Executive Director, advocated for a constructive policy to #AnimalResearch and the development of new approach methodologies (#NAMs) following the active role of EU-LIFE in the co-creation of the ERA action on this topic. Her main points were: • 𝗔𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝘀 that help to reduce the use of animals in research and regulatory testing. Likewise, we are fully committed to the Three Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement). • Researchers are the ones developing NAMs, so 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 for the success of any policy on NAMs and must be part of it at all stages. • The main value of this ERA action is the capacity to 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀, most specially at the regulatory stage; global coordination beyond the EU is also critical. • This action will only contribute to EU competitiveness if it allows the advancement of biomedical research and helps move science forward, 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 and not on political timelines. • The 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 component of the action towards all actors - researchers, regulators, policy makers and citizens - is paramount. Informed policies must be based on broader understanding of the complexity of the biology behind biomedical research and on the potential risks, gains and impacts of the policies. Exciting Collaboration Firming Up Between Auriga Research & Amrita University Delivering a captivating keynote address at the ARISE- Amrita Research and Innovation Symposium on April 6, 2024, Dr. Ganesh Ramamurthi, CEO of Auriga Research, shed light on safety measures across plant, animal, and environmental sectors through rigorous testing and certification processes. This event served as a catalyst to ignite the passion of research scholars and faculty, embarking on the 'Grand Challenge' journey, centered around the theme of 'One Health.' Under the adept guidance of Dr. Shiva Prasad, chairing the 'One Health' grand challenge, fruitful collaboration between Auriga Research and Amrita University flourished, aimed at addressing the holistic health of plants, animals, and ecosystems. The symposium witnessed the unveiling of seven interdisciplinary teams, each presenting groundbreaking research proposals revolving around the production of nutritious and safe food, as well as the development of secure and effective drugs, all in alignment with the overarching 'One Health' paradigm. foundingGIDE is a project coordinated by #EuroBioImaging and funded under the European Commission's Horizon Europe framework program. It is dedicated to enabling the interoperability of image data resources through #ontology mapping and harmonisation of #metadatamodels. The foundingGIDE Community Event took place in Okazaki, Japan, back-to-back with Global BioImaging Exchange of Experience. The event brought together nearly 130 participants from 26 countries, including global imaging experts, policymakers, funders, and imaging and data researchers. The goal was to drive forward solutions for FAIR biological and preclinical image data in a collaborative effort to lay the foundation for a coordinated Global Image Data Ecosystem (GIDE). The project has provided valuable lessons and highlighted key challenges, positioning ERGA as a model for decentralised, inclusive, and equitable biodiversity genomics initiatives around the world. 💬“It allows research organisations like the Earlham Institute – primarily working with technology and data - to collaborate with scientists such as ecologists working in the field, and do so in a really natural and open way.” - Dr Seanna McTaggart, Programme Manager The Earlham Institute was involved in sequencing, assembly and analysis of five genomes, as well as contributing to project management, and supporting #FAIRdata standards through #COPO - a data-brokering tool developed by the Institute.
