#InternalDisplacement presents a host of public health challenges, including increased vulnerability to infectious diseases. In Ethiopia’s Somali region, PATH partners with the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) to prevent #malaria outbreaks in humanitarian crisis zones. In April 2023, the PATH-implemented, PMI-funded Surveillance for Malaria Elimination Activity worked closely with Shabeley woreda health officials to facilitate the distribution of 500 long-lasting insecticide-treated nets. In total, 891 individuals have been protected from malaria infection. "Nearly 1 in 10 newborns are born too soon – that is 1 out of every 10 births that are most likely to require unique lactation care due to challenges with baby not feeding directly at the breast. WHO recommends mothers’ own milk as the first option for this vulnerable population, but current systems for providing lactation care require a transformation to a comprehensive vision and care platform that places mothers’ unique lactation needs at the center – as the driver of the first food system and foundation for long-term infant feeding and health outcomes." Read more in AlignMNH from PATH colleagues Kimberly Mansen, Emily M. Njuguna and Kiersten Israel-Ballard about the "secret sauce" for supporting small and/or sick newborns and their mothers for long-term feeding success: 1️⃣ Enhanced training for the #health workforce 2️⃣ Integrated, person-centered #healthsystems 3️⃣ Better availability of supportive supplies and devices
Optimizing care for the small and sick newborn requires prioritizing their mother

#RSV is the world's top cause of severe respiratory infections and hospitalization in young children—responsible for 1 in every 28 deaths occurring before six months of age. A new maternal vaccine and long-acting monoclonal antibody could help change that! Experts—including PATH's Clint Pecenka, Ranju Baral, and Jessica Fleming—explain in The Lancet. Every country should have the opportunity to choose which product best fits the needs of its population and its health system. That’s why ensuring that these products can be available, affordable, and accessible is so important, especially for countries with low- and middle-income economies where nearly all RSV deaths occur. Read the article to learn about the new RSV interventions and the challenges and opportunities on the road to their global authorization and implementation. Also included are spotlights from Argentina, Kenya, and Spain that bring different contexts and perspectives to life. https://lnkd.in/exTJpAmZ

Clinical signs alone do not detect all indicators of severe illness in children. In order for health workers to make the right diagnosis, they need access to and training for critical screening and #diagnostic tools. But in many countries, these devices are either not available, not functioning properly, or not suited for infants who need them most—putting children's lives at risk. Since 2019, the PATH-led Tools for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (TIMCI) project has worked to improve access to #PulseOximeters and clinical decision support systems in Tanzania, India, Kenya, and Senegal. "Before the TIMCI project's interventions, it was incredibly difficult to detect #hypoxemia in very sick children upon arrival," recalls Joyce Nuhu, a clinical officer at the Nguvumali Health Center in Tanga, Tanzania. Since the introduction of the new tools, Joyce says, detection—and subsequent management or referral—has become much easier. As the five-year project comes to an end, we're reflecting on its achievements and lessons learned: https://lnkd.in/eU4kw_2V olgah odek Amos Mugisha Michael Ruffo Ifakara Health Institute

Digital Square at PATH co-hosted a fantastic discussion at the 4th G20 Health Working Group meeting in Natal, Brazil, earlier this week, exploring the transformative power of digital tools and data in creating climate-resilient health systems. 🌍💪 Ethel Leonor Noia Maciel, Secretary for Health Surveillance and Environment at Ministério da Saúde, had a powerful message regarding the urgency of the climate and health crisis: “The time is now, and we're the people responsible for solving this.” Thank you to Wellcome Trust for your support and partnership and to our co-hosts G20 Brasil 2024, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Global Fund, The Rockefeller Foundation, and World Health Organization for making it possible. Together, we are paving the way for a healthier, more climate-resilient future. #G20Health #DigitalHealth #ClimateAction #HealthInnovation

PATH marks 20 years of advancing health equity in #Zambia! As our Chief of the Africa Region Dr. Nanthalile Mugala said at PATH Zambia's anniversary event this summer: “There is no reason that the best technologies and health tools should be out of reach for people simply because of where they were born." Dr. Earnest Muyunda, Douglas Waudo, and Charles Wanga share highlights from two decades of work with the Ministry of Health of Zambia and introduce PATH Zambia's new strategic plan: https://lnkd.in/dmhcN57j
In June, PATH #Zambia celebrated two decades of strong partnership with the #people of Zambia. The impact includes a marked reduction in malaria cases, enhanced disease surveillance, and pioneering genomic sequencing capabilities in the country. From tackling TB to improving family planning access, PATH's innovations and capacity-building efforts have played a significant role in advancing #health #equity in "One Zambia, One Nation!" Join Earnest Muyunda, Douglas Waudo, and me as we share PATH Zambia's remarkable story with you. https://lnkd.in/dqDZDs8U #PATH4UHC, Philip Welkhoff, Sintha Chiumia, Inutu Kongwa, Wanga Katimba, MBA.
