🚨 We Collaborate: 🆕 Open access Joint Article from BrightSpace and GeneBEcon Impacts of accelerating agricultural R&D transfer on global food security Authors: Yan Jin, Zuzana Smeets Kristkova, Maximilian Kardung, Justus Wesseler Published: 09 December 2024 / GM Crops & Food: Biotechnology in Agriculture and the Food Chain, Volume 15, 2024 - Issue 1, TAYLOR & FRANCIS ONLINE The article examines the effects of expediting agricultural research and development (R&D) dissemination, particularly focusing on #GenomeEditing (GE) technologies, on #GlobalFoodSecurity. The study highlights the significant positive impacts of accelerating agricultural #R&Dtransfer, particularly in GE technologies, on global economic performance and #foodsecurity. It emphasizes the importance of streamlining #regulatoryframeworks to reduce delays in technology adoption, thereby maximizing the benefits of #agriculturalinnovations. Key Insights: 🔸 Economic and Welfare Benefits: Accelerating R&D transfer in high-income countries enhances economic performance, welfare, and food affordability on a global scale. The study quantifies the cost of delay (COD) in adopting GE technologies, revealing that postponements can lead to significant economic losses. For instance, the annuity of COD ranges from losses of -$1.1 billion in Brazil to gains of $18.5 billion in Europe. 🔸 Global Impact of Accelerated R&D: A three-year acceleration of R&D transfer across all countries yields substantial benefits, especially for middle and low-income nations such as China, India, other Asian countries, and Sub-Saharan African countries. The annuity of COD in this scenario ranges from -$4.8 billion in Brazil to $83.9 billion in China, indicating that streamlining GE regulatory frameworks is essential for enhancing food security and global welfare. 🔸 Policy Implications: The findings suggest that simplifying and expediting regulatory processes for GE technologies can stimulate #SustainableAgriculturalTransitions, thereby improving global food security. Delays in adopting such technologies due to lengthy regulatory procedures are costly, underscoring the need for policy reforms to facilitate quicker R&D transfer. E-SPFdigit officially launched: Emergent soil, plant and food onsite digital services on chemical and biological contaminants 🚜🌱 E-SPFDigit project kicked off in Thessaloniki on October 8-9, 2024, hosted by Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). The 18-partner consortium gathered to discuss the shared vision of transforming on-site digital tools for safer, more sustainable food production—from vineyards and vegetable farms to post-harvest processes. With a systemic approach and integrated piloting at the heart of the project, E-SPFdigit aims to revolutionize monitoring and decision-making in agriculture. The AI-driven tools will enhance real-time detection of contaminants such as PFAS, pesticides, and heavy metals, improving environmental sustainability and food safety across the entire production chain. The project consortium is composed by the following institutions: Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) Eulambia Advanced Technologies IKNOWHOW SA National Observatory of Athens Sidroco Holdings Ltd Drone Hopper Critt Agroalimentaire Sud Apemeta - Associação Portuguesa de Empresas de Tecnologias Ambientais T.E. 🚩 We are delighted to be involved in the new 3-year #NSmartSystems Green ERA-Hub (GEH) project with our #colleagues from Hochschule Geisenheim University, Department of Vegetable Crops (Jana Zinkernagel) and partners from Aarhus University, Denmark (Davide Cammarano) and Natural Resources Institute Finland / Luonnonvarakeskus (Luke) - Matti Pastell who will coordinate this project. 🔎 In this project, we will focus on developing different methods and open source tools that will help to optimally combine diversification and #precision fertiliser management, enabling farmers to improve their profitability and reduce negative environmental impacts. This is important as cropping system diversification supports #sustainability, climate resilience and #ecosystem services, and will be considered in the context of #precisionagriculture in NSmartSystems. ✏️ The general focus of the NSmartSystems will be on the following tasks, of which our group will be responsible for points 2 and 3. The specific objectives are: ✅ (1) Development of the decision support systems (DSS) for cropping system diversification through crop rotation and intelligent use of intercrops. ✅ (2) Improved decision making for variable rate N fertilisation through user-centred, multi-parametric tools. ✅ (3) Optimization of in-field variable rate N application through improved coordination of the application system and the spreader. ✅ (4) Develop the tools for farmers to analyse and monitor the impact of their management decisions over time. ✨ So we are excited to get started and Dimitrios S. Paraforos sends greetings from Helsinki, Finland where we met with our partners for the first #kickoffmeeting. ❗️ The project is taking place in the framework of the Green ERA Hub (GEH) for the coordination of different national and regional research programmes. The GEH has brought together the research and innovation priorities of different ERA-Net initiatives to launch this call. #partnership #newproject #digitalfarming #sustainableagriculture #transparency #research
