Contributing to the Civil Society's Vision for a European Oceans Pact 🌊 Senior Director Fanny Lossy participated in a public hearing hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee last week, focusing on shaping a strategic and comprehensive approach to the ocean. ➡️ Key discussions revolved around sustainable maritime policies, environmental protection, and the role of stakeholders in achieving a resilient EU blue economy ➡️ Key points from the European Shipowners: 🔹 The European Oceans Pact should be developed in synergy with the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal and Maritime Industrial Strategy. 🔹 We need to invest in industrial capacity to ensure that at least 40% of clean shipping fuels and clean technologies are produced in Europe, in line with the NZIA benchmark. 🔹 Collaboration along the maritime value chain is key to ensure both the decarbonisation of shipping and the safety of navigation through maritime spatial planning. #AllHandsOnDeck

💡A Shared Vision for Ship Finance The European Commission has recently published its ‘Support Study for the Development of a Living Inventory of Relevant Instruments to Support Investments in the Shipping Sector’. ⚓ The study proposes concrete measures to implement financing solutions that reflect the unique characteristics of the shipping industry, such as: 🔹 Tailored Financing Tools: Need for diverse financing instruments combining public and private investments to support long-term, capital-intensive maritime projects. 🔹 Regulatory Adaptation: Call for regulatory frameworks that recognise the distinctive nature of shipping and its long-term funding needs. 🔹 Support for SMEs: Accessible funding tailored to the needs of smaller players, reducing administrative burdens and providing pathways for innovation. The Commission’s recommendations: 🔹 The critical role of tailored ship financing in driving the maritime industry’s energy transition, including dedicated maritime calls in European funding. 🔹 The critical role of shipping SMEs and the importance of better access to finance. 🔹 The urgent need to enhance financing tools, simplify regulation, and foster innovative and transitional projects to meet the EU’s climate goals. ECSA welcomes the European Commission’s efforts to address the critical need for bridging the gap in ship finance and shares their commitment to ensuring that shipping remains at the forefront of the EU’s green transition! We welcome the release of the Galaxy Leader crew after 430 days in captivity. Seafarers are the beating heart of the shipping industry and their right to perform their duties safely and without fear must be guaranteed. It is paramount to ensure innocent seafarers are not exposed to such ordeals in the future. Read the statement by International Chamber of Shipping below.
Statement from Guy Platten, International Chamber of Shipping Secretary General, following the release of the Galaxy Leader crew: We welcome the news of the Galaxy Leader crew being released today and that they will be reunited with their families after being held in captivity since the 19 November 2023. The fact that the innocent crew were held for over 430 days is unacceptable and a truly dreadful situation. Nobody should have to endure such an ordeal, and we call on all nations to support our seafarers and shipping so that this does not happen again. ICS deplores any and all attacks on shipping as they are a breach of international law and threaten the lives of innocent seafarers and the safety of merchant shipping. https://lnkd.in/eWj3G_ur
