Toby Neilson, Director of Architecture at BDG architecture + design, attended the UK REiiF at the end of May. Here are a few of his key takeaways: “What a whirlwind week it was at UKREiiF! Its taken a while to consolidate all that went on….and what a lot there was! Below are my highlights: I loved hearing about how Science and Innovation projects are adding social value from Caroline McDade (BNP Paribas) Gareth Roberts (British Land) and Emma Goodford (Knight Frank). With inspiring and charismatic requests for ‘all of that!’ from Bayo Dosunmu – Chief Exec London Borough of Lambeth. Did you know at any one time there are over 600 clinical trials running in Lambeth? Making it simultaneously one of the most scientifically advanced and economically deprived boroughs in London – not to mention one of the most diverse. It was great learning more about Mission Street and their pioneering design and development of research and science buildings throughout the UK. Great to meet Robert Burke at Constructive despite the rain! Catching up with Helen Nichol Noesis Consulting Limited was also a real joy – thank you for trekking across Leeds in the deluge and giving up a good chunk of your time for me. I owe you one! And a new one or me – joining the 7am running group with Property Sports Network. Definitely worth it – Thank you Andrew Link! As always good time spent with past and current partners and collaborators – John Lenehan and marnie brinkworth at Acrylicize (thank you for the introduction to Bundobust). Alex Lynes at Webb Yates Engineers and Andy Stanton and Richard Hansen at Introba and Rebecca Cove at Jason Bruges Studio. UKREiiF is a breath of fresh air amongst a number of conferences in the Built Environment sector, it was great to be talking optimistically about the UK. Hearing from proper influencers and decision makers about the huge amount of intellectual capital we have and the drive for sustainable and considered added social value. Looking forward to next year already!"

🌳How to Co-create with Nature?🐛 Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining an on-stage dialogue with partners in crime Tiia Vihand Estonian Design Centre and Vincent van Herk Dutch Design Week, moderated by Päivi Tahkokallio, on this important, interesting, and inspiring question: How to co-create with nature? Spending an entire Summit during munich creative business week on this topic is, from my point of view, encouraging. This would not have been the case 3-5 years ago. I enjoyed that throughout this Summit, the intention was not to conclude anything but simply to share perspectives and debate the HOW, because there’s no one answer to this question. 🙏🏼 But what is key to me is that we grow confidence in debating the how, and explore and experiment in a way that, 10 years from now (hopefully only 5 years!), co-creating with nature is mainstream. Some key takeaways: 🍀 How to give Nature a voice? Nature has a voice. Nature will fix itself. We, humans, need to find ways to listen. 🍀 Nature is one of the most important stakeholders, whether you want to recognize it or not. 🍀 Co-creation with nature has a crucial impact on climate change mitigation. But co-creating with nature also offers substantial potential in relation to health, wellbeing, community building, and a sense of belonging. 🍀 Co-creation processes create empathy – in this case, for both humans and non-humans. 🍀 We, the current generations, need to accept that we are planting seeds today that will be harvested by future generations. 🍀 Collaboration, collaboration, collaboration!!! I am happy that I could represent both DDC – Danish Design Center, BEDA - The Bureau of European Design Associations, and Desire an Irresistible Circular Society. Thanks Nadine Vicentini Thorsten Buch Leonhard Nima Daniela Bohlinger Kara Pecknold 💚
The mcbw design summit 2024 was a complete success: an entire day was dedicated to examining the theme of the year in more detail from different angles: How to co-create with nature ... as a designer, an entrepreneur, a creatively active person. We heard the interesting positions of the mcbw advisory board, the international perspectives of BEDA members and then delved deeper into the individual sub-themes with selected examples from high-calibre speakers. The highlight was certainly mcbw's Creative Explorer: Stefano Boeri and his presentation on Green Obsession. There was no shortage of networking either - it was an all-round successful day full of inspiration. Many thanks to all participants, speakers, organisers and the Munich Urban Colab team. 🙏 Stefano Boeri Stefano Boeri Architetti Daniela Bohlinger BMW Group Officina Corpuscoli MOGU mycelium Laura Kiesewetter Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) Tom Kortbeek Fillip Studios Leonhard Nima Studio Nima BEDA - The Bureau of European Design Associations Päivi Tahkokallio Tiia Vihand Christina Melander Vincent van Herk BayernDesign #designconnects #mcbw24 #designweek #designsummit #inspiration #howtococreatewithnature #TheGermanDesignEvent #designtalk #paneldiscussion #design Reel: Martin Bresler

Design is one of Scotland’s greatest assets but how can we grow its impact nationwide? 💭 The value and importance of design to society – and its widespread connections to all areas of business and public life – is often overlooked. Working with Creative Scotland, we commissioned independent research from Edinburgh-based innovation and design agency GRAFT, along with collaborators Andthen and how2glu on what design can do for Scotland. This is a first step towards rethinking how Scotland nurtures and supports design, as well as providing a better understanding of design’s potential for Scotland’s future. Now we are exploring how to develop this work over the coming months. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gVRBQVWc Thank you to all the contributors who supported this work, including the UNESCO City of Design Dundee team. The research built on the important earlier work of A Design Project for Scotland.

🎉 Official launch day of our Optoppen knowledge hub and viability tool! 🎉 Today we brought together developers, city officials, architects, engineers and academics from across Europe to showcase the new web ‘platform’ and tool. The culmination of a year-long project, we’ve been compiling research and innovation in vertical extension with biobased materials; developed a library highlighting relevant policy developments across Europe, and a bank of case studies showing how Optoppen can be done. The website is also where you’ll find our building viability tool, which allows asset owners and developers to easily test for Optoppen potential, understanding how much new floorspace can be created and how much carbon can be locked away. We are so grateful to all of our collaborators across cities, industry and finance – and to our funder, Built by Nature. "The next big thing..." seems like a good first post in the new year. Three events last year were like dots to me that, when connected, reveal that "next big thing": moving from "keep it simple" to just "keep it". First, Prof. An Fonteyne and her students are looking at ways to use the buildings we have in a more compact, dense and communal way. Minimal, if any, invasions for a potentially great effect. The title image is theirs. Second, Prof. Dr. Silke Langenberg ReMain program aims to preserve the aging buildings, renovating them by adding and tweaking the existing material rather than the usual stripping down to the concrete bone or even complete demolition. Third, the ETH Executive Board has approved the Department of Architecture's Living Lab plan to renovate and upgrade the 1976 Architecture and Engineering Building, the very large HIL, as an experimental project that incorporates academic research in sustainable construction into real, live, large-scale renovation. I had the opportunity to speak to and review the projects of An Fonteyne's students last December and plan to speak to Silke Langenberg's students in March about digital tools for portfolio management. Many thanks for the invitation to both. Last but not least, I am looking forward to the launch of the HIL Living Lab in 2025. The dots, when properly connected, show that some of these small things will be quite big. #eth #ethz #ethzurich #ethimmobilien
