The Supreme Court ruling in the Relentless v. Dept. of Commerce case (combined with Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo)—also known as "Chevron"—jeopardizes our access to critical information about America’s fisheries, which is the exact opposite of what we need to handle the fast-growing impacts of climate change. 🌊 Dive into the world of marine conservation with the National Audubon Society's focus on seabird protection and sustainable fisheries management. Seabirds, like majestic sailors of the sky, have faced a 70% decline since 1950 due to challenges from overfishing, climate change, and pollution. Audubon steps in to reverse this crisis through: - Advocacy for sustainable fisheries management to protect both seabirds and small, schooling fish vital for their survival. - Establishment of marine protected areas to provide safe habitats for seabirds, fish, and marine life essential for coastal communities and economies. - Commitment to research and conservation through the Seabird Institute, advancing knowledge and techniques globally. From protecting the Atlantic Puffins' wintering grounds to supporting seabirds and coastal communities against climate change, Audubon's multifaceted efforts stand as beacons of hope for our feathered friends of the ocean. Let's join hands in safeguarding our marine ecosystems and the winged wonders that call them home. 🦜🌊 https://lnkd.in/gs6s8FJf #marineconservation

The Med Sea Alliance, and our members from Oceana in Europe, Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Global Fishing Watch and The Nature Conservancy were pleased to attend the 17th Session of the Compliance Committee of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (#GFCM) this month at the United Nations FAO. Despite significant advancements in our #conservation efforts, the #Mediterranean remains under immense pressure. Overfishing and illegal fishing pose major threats, endangering the sea's unique biodiversity and the livelihoods of coastal communities dependent on these fisheries. Med Sea Alliance members are pushing for reforms at the level of the GFCM. Last year, the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), Oceana, and The Nature Conservancy pushed for a compliance mechanism to hold countries accountable for their conservation commitments under this Regional Fisheries Management Organization. This was supposed to start in 2025 but the timeline has been delayed as of this meeting. We are determined to ensure its timely implementation. Our members, notably Global Fishing Watch are also supporting advanced technologies like Remote Electronic Monitoring (#REM) to improve transparency, compliance, and scientific research. To learn more about our members’ priorities for the GFCM, check out these resources: On the need for a compliance mechanism 👉http://bit.ly/3wSHZ09 GFCM website 👉 https://lnkd.in/dkUahEJ9

🌊 **Challenging the Status Quo:** Dive deep into the impactful work of the National Audubon Society in making the seas safer for our feathered friends. 🐦 Seabirds facing a 70% decline since 1950 demand urgent action. From overfishing to climate change, every aspect of their existence is at risk. 🎣 **Protecting Our Oceans:** Audubon's focus on sustainable fisheries management and marine protected areas sheds light on the critical need to safeguard our ocean ecosystems. The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation Act, a federal law supporting the revival of fish species and a thriving marine environment, underscores the interconnectedness of wildlife preservation and sustainable practices. 🏝️ **Safe Havens for Marine Life:** Audubon's efforts in establishing marine protected areas across the Western Hemisphere underscore the importance of habitats for seabirds, fish, and coastal communities. From the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument to the Joulter Cays Marine Protected Area in the Bahamas, these sanctuaries serve as crucial refuges for diverse marine species. 🐧 **Empowering Advocates:** The Seabird Institute, formerly known as Project Puffin, stands as a testament to Audubon's four-decade commitment to seabird conservation. With substantive data, nest restoration projects, and educational initiatives, the institute's impact resonates globally, emphasizing the urgency of climate change actions on seabird populations. 🌿 **Climate Consciousness:** As climate change poses a triple-threat to the ocean and its inhabitants, Audubon's dedication to ocean-based climate solutions and restoration efforts highlights the critical need for collective action in preserving our marine ecosystems. 🦜 **Join the Cause:** Explore Audubon's marine conservation initiatives and discover how you can play a part in protecting our oceans and the magnificent seabirds that call it home. Let's rally together for a sustainable future for our marine ecosystems. 🌏🌊 #MarineConservation #Audubon #Seabirds #OceanProtection #marineconservation https://lnkd.in/gs6s8FJf

Smart Fisheries Collaboration with WWF 🌏Client/Collaborators: WWF 📍 Location: United Kingdom 📅 Year: 2021 🔄 Project: Climate Smart Fisheries MarFishEco collaborated with WWF, RSPB, and MCS to summarize the latest scientific knowledge regarding blue carbon, fishing impacts and the potential role of the UK's fishing industry in addressing climate change. Here's a glimpse into the 2021 study’s vital insights: * Fisheries have a dual role in climate change. * The distribution and recruitment of some fish stocks are changing with a changing climate. *Carbon emissions from fishing, notably bottom trawling and burning fuel have climate impacts. This week, Tomorrow's Fish released a report highlighting how climate change is disrupting fishing experiences and explores how anglers are best positioned to call for climate-resilient fisheries that are healthy, sustainable and abundant. Ocean Conservancy proudly supports this work and appreciates the importance of engaging anglers to ensure America's fisheries are climate-ready. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/djgctJ95

🚨 An Emergency Order is needed NOW to protect southern resident killer whales from imminent threats to their survival. WWF-Canada alongside other conservation groups have sent a petition to Fisheries & Oceans Minister Diane Lebouthiller and Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault demanding they do more to save this endangered population of just 74 whales. The seasonal SRKW measures announced Monday largely continue existing measures for protection that are not sufficient for recovery of these whales who now face increased threats with a 7-fold increase in oil tanker traffic from the TMX pipeline. The federal government is failing these endangered whales and hasn't even acted on their *own* recommendations from the Canada Energy Regulator | Régie de l’énergie du Canada for a cumulative effects management plan to reduce underwater noise, collision risk and contaminant levels from vessel traffic in SKRW's critical habitat. “Southern resident killer whales are closer to extinction today than they were 20 years ago. They are in desperate need of a lifeline and substantially increased protection from the multiple threats they face.” – Hussein A., lead specialist marine conservation for WWF-Canada We need stronger measures to reduce underwater noise disturbances from ships, action to increase the availability of Chinook salmon, and prohibition on the dumping of harmful ship waste. The groups behind the petition are the David Suzuki Foundation, Georgia Strait Alliance, Living Oceans Society, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Raincoast Conservation Foundation, and WWF-Canada. Urgent action is needed to protect marine biodiversity in the South Pacific! New Zealand remains the only country to deep-sea bottom trawl in the South Pacific threatening seamount ecosystems. At this South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (#SPRFMO) meeting, we urge members to unite to protect all seamounts. #ClimateChange is also leading to shifts in the distribution and abundance of fisheries, altering ecosystems, affecting livelihoods, destabilizing food systems and challenging economic security worldwide. The DSCC calls on SPRFMO to agree to: ❌ The closure of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (#VMEs) to #BottomTrawling 🎣 Sustainable management of fisheries across the Convention area 🌊 Implementing a precautionary approach on individual species and broader ecosystems, research and monitoring on the effects of climate change and the closure of fishing in vulnerable marine ecosystem areas.
