Regional Office at RIBA West Midlands

Introducing Shauna Bradley as the new RIBA West Midlands Regional Chair 🎉 We are delighted to announce that Shauna Bradley has been appointed as the RIBA Regional Chair for the West Midlands. Based in Howells’ Birmingham office, Shauna leads a design studio with a focus on masterplanning and city-scale regeneration, helping to shape the future of our towns and cities. With over a decade of experience leading the Paradise development in Birmingham, she is currently working with Urban Splash on the creation of a multi-generational community at Port Loop, as well as the transformation of Campbell Park North in Milton Keynes. A passionate advocate for equity in architecture, Shauna founded Project W at Howells, an initiative designed to support, recognise and empower women at all stages of their careers. Having studied at Queen's University Belfast and Birmingham City University, Shauna now calls Birmingham home and is dedicated to creating great places for people to live and work in. Her approach to design balances large-scale strategy with detailed, community-focused thinking, helping to repair the city grain and bring neighbourhoods together. Alongside her role as RIBA West Midlands Regional Chair, Shauna is a trustee for Design Midlands, a mentor for the Women in Architecture and BCO NextGen programmes, and previously served on the The Birmingham Civic Society Planning Committee. One of Shauna’s first engagements as Regional Chair will be speaking at the upcoming West Midlands Collaborative Conversations event in March: https://lnkd.in/eFpYdQpz Join us in welcoming Shauna to the role! 🎊👏 Matt Blakeley Daniel Stanyard Sophie Schad #RIBAWestMidlands #Leadership #CityRegeneration #UrbanDesign #WomenInArchitecture #DesignLeadership #WestMidlands

Thrilled to announce the launch of a great initiative at Birmingham City University, where our Level 4 Architectural Technology students will be working on a live design project in collaboration with MEPC Limited and Howells on Paradise Birmingham. Kicked off on January 29th, our Architectural Design Studio students will be designing ‘One Radcliffe Square – The Hotel’, which is part of Phase 2 of the Paradise Birmingham Development. This project offers students an opportunity to engage in a real-world architectural project of a high-profile urban development. A huge thank you to Simon Pope and Andrew Bushell for kick-starting this initiative by delivering an introductory session, presenting the project brief, and outlining the constraints and expectations for the students. Many thanks to Lucy Swift for coordinating and making this initiative possible. With regular check-ins from Simon and Andy, students will receive industry feedback throughout the semester, culminating in their final presentations at Innovation Fest 2025, where their work will be showcased as part of BCU’s Architectural Degree Show! #BCU #ParadiseBirmingham #Howells #InnovationFest2025 #OneRadcliffeSquare #Phase2

A pair of Pineapples, please! We're pleased to see both #EdenDock at Canary Wharf Group and #CampbellPark, Milton Keynes up for the Festival of Place Pineapple Awards. Eden Dock is the first step of our visionary strategy to rethink the human experience at #CanaryWharf, where floating islands of timber seating integrated with gardens, steps, and walkways bring the public realm down to the water level for the first time. Here, new south- and west-facing spaces for congregation are created—including floating gardens, educational spaces and social terraces. The scheme is shortlisted in the Public Space category - thanks to client Canary Wharf Group and collaborator HTA Design LLP! Campbell Park North in #MiltonKeynes is a project underway for clients Urban Splash and Glenbrook and collaborating with Planit, and it's shortlisted in the Future Place category! This landscape-led #neighbourhood of 1,500 homes will enjoy communal gardens, allotments and play spaces, not to mention access to the 100-acre Campbell Park and the city's ample cycle and pedestrian routes. #awards #PineappleAwards #FestivalOfPlace #PlaceMaking Greengage Environmental Ltd London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Unanimous approval for NXQ Manchester! Manchester City Council unanimously approved the plans for our heritage-led Tech Hub on 23 January 2025. Located in a prominent position within #Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter neighbourhood, we’ve designed a heritage-led workplace scheme for client Soller. Through extensive consultation with the City Council, key stakeholder groups and the public, the design for “NXQ” carefully retains and restores key heritage assets on the site while respecting its historic neighbours, particularly the Grade II listed Daily Express Building. Partner Dav Bansal commented: “Our adaptive re-use of an existing block will deliver a new #TechHub which pays homage to the exceptional Art Deco “Streamline Moderne” Express Building, alongside the careful and measured retention and restoration of historic buildings and facades along Lever Street.” Continue reading: https://lnkd.in/eafq_672 AKT II | Turner & Townsend | AtkinsRéalis | Atelier Ten | AshtonHale | Planit | #WorkplaceArchitecture #ManchesterArchitecture #ArtDeco #NorthernQuarter #Howells

  • Nikola Tesla Museum, Belgrade Howells led a multidisciplinary team in submitting proposals for an international design competition to create a new Nikola Tesla Museum in #Belgrade - celebrating the extraordinary life and work of Serbia’s most famous scientist, engineer and innovator. Our design transforms a derelict 100-year-old paper mill into an atmospheric visitor attraction, located within the emerging neighbourhood of #BelgradeWaterfront. #NikolaTesla's discoveries into the potential of electricity and radio signals led him to be regarded by some as a magician or even an alien being. This sense of theatre is incorporated into our design through atmospheric exhibitions of light and energy; from the new arrival square connecting the metro station, to the entrance portal with a ‘magnetic’ ground surface, and the immersive series of gallery spaces. The museum accommodates a range of educational exhibitions and artefacts within spaces that flow around the central atrium – marked by its distinctive chimney, which serves as a wayfinding marker to the surrounding city. Sensitive #architectural interventions to the façade and skyline reflect the internal programme, using dark metallic finishes that recall Tesla’s creations and juxtapose with the elegant white factory building. Citation from the competition jury: "The author managed to create a dynamic and exciting visitor experience, that is not only educational, but also emotionally powerful. "Through a carefully devised distribution of space, each element has its own role in telling Tesla's story, giving it a unique value compared to other competitors. "This design is also characterized by an exceptional landscaping proposal, with clearly defined elements, such as paving symbolizing the magnetic field and circular lighting placed above the square, which creates a unique ambience. "The design is extremely valuable because of its complexity, attention to detail and ability to merge historical significance with a modern approach to exhibition design." Our submission was awarded third prize in a field of 46 entries. Agreement to accelerate Greyfriars regeneration   Our ECF partnership has entered a new agreement with West Northamptonshire Council, via Muse, taking the next step towards the regeneration of #Greyfriars in #Northampton town centre.   The vision is to create a vibrant new #neighbourhood, reimagining derelict buildings into an #artsandculture hub and innovative #workspace, alongside new homes, shops, restaurants, a new outdoor amphitheatre and public spaces.   ECF has already been working with the Council to explore and shape planning, delivery, and funding for #Greyfriars. This latest agreement enables ECF to develop more detailed strategies ahead of entering into a formal #DevelopmentAgreement later this year.   Read more: https://lnkd.in/g3xp25RQ With Homes England | Legal & General | West Northamptonshire Council | Pagabo   #placemaking #regeneration #partnership
