In 2010 The SPL Trust joined forces with The Football Pools and The Scottish Government to announce an exciting partnership that would see top flight football clubs tackle a number of serious men’s health issues. Football Fans in Training was developed by club coaches in conjunction with top medical and sports science professionals in Scotland, as well as the Scottish Government Public Health Directorate. The programme has had a long term impact on the lives of over 13,000 people, helping them to become fitter, happier and healthier.

*New Blog Post* Sporting excellence and keeping our sports people safe. Paris Olympics 2024 is nearly upon us, and with it we will hear stories of adversity to triumph. We know from past stories that anyone in sport working their hardest to follow their dreams can be at risk of exploitation and abuse. Many feel they have to keep silent, so not to jeopardise their chosen path, but this causes long-term health issues which can last a lifetime. We need to continue the efforts to have safe spaces and practices in sport to keep children and adults safe from harm. We need to have clear oversight of sport governing bodies, to ensure concerns can be brought safely and investigated impartially. What does it take to get the national agency for sport, three sports governing bodies, universities and academic leaders, a national health service, a government and a concerned parent together? A topic as important as concussion in sport! Whilst organisations can lend a helping hand and provide much valued resources, it takes people to drive and innovate. Scotland has led for the past 9 years in developing one set of guidelines for all who are active and enjoy sport. If In Doubt Sit Them Out has now been adopted across the whole of the UK and with our Australian and Kiwi cousins. Today’s launch of the third iteration of the guidelines sees an improvement how we should recognise and remove anyone suspected of a concussion, how the brain of a child or an adult should be respected in the same way with rest, recuperation, rehabilitation and return to normal life and sport, how we should be more aware of the impact on women and girls as well as those of us who enjoy sport and live with a disability. CSSC joins over 200 organisations, from across the UK’s Health and Fitness sector, in calling on all parties to commit to policies and actions that address the appalling and deteriorating state of health and fitness in the U.K. 2023 saw record levels of sickness absence and the NHS is at breaking point under the demands it faces. Govt, of whichever persuasion, needs cut the rhetoric and deliver resourced action. We need a population that is ‘Up, Out & Active’. Govt and Employers need to collaborate to encourage and assist our communities, our population, our children, our colleagues and ourselves to get active.
