This July, Health Innovation Hub Ireland is spotlighting our latest Clinical Evaluation Study with CergenX and their product CergenX Wave which provides new hope for early recognition of potential Brain Injury in Newborns. At least 5 out of every 1,000 newborns in the developed world have some form of brain injury at birth. Newborn brain injuries are frequently clinically invisible and can be undiagnosed at birth, resulting in lifelong consequences for not only the infant but also their families and society. In the USA, the lifetime care costs for an individual born with brain injury can be up to $3 million. Currently, EEG (electroencephalography) is the gold standard for detecting brain function issues. However, its widespread use is limited by several factors: it requires specialised expertise for analysis, results can take hours to days, it is costly, and scaling up its availability has proven challenging. CergenX is a high-potential start-up supported by Enterprise Ireland and a spin-out from INFANT Research Centre at University College Cork, which has developed a groundbreaking solution. The CergenX Wave is an innovative two-channel EEG device integrated with (AI). It allows for the early recognition of potential brain injury in all infants, facilitating timely intervention, leading to reduced infant morbidity, improved developmental outcomes, and decreased severity of brain injuries. The role of Health Innovation Hub Ireland was crucial in assisting CergenX on their innovation journey. Read the following case study to learn more about how HIHI's support contributed to the development and success of the CergenX Wave. This project underscored the importance of early detection tools in neonatal brain health and demonstrated the significant impact such innovations can have on improving outcomes for newborns and their families. Connecting innovation and healthcare.
About us
Health Innovation Hub Ireland (HIHI) was established by Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation and the Department of Health, supported by Enterprise Ireland (EI) and the Health Service Executive (HSE) to drive collaboration between the health service and enterprise. This unique joint government initiative, offers companies the opportunity for pilot and clinical validation studies and the health service access to innovative products, services, devices, that they may otherwise not be exposed to. HIHI works to impact Irish business and Irish healthcare in three key areas: •Industry: Through HIHI, enterprise can access Ireland’s leading health professionals who will pilot and test innovative products, services and devices. Acting as a broker, HIHI matches companies with relevant clinical teams, overseeing a study of each product in an Irish clinical setting. •Healthcare: A central part of the HIHI remit is to assess ideas and concepts for healthcare innovation from all staff – clinical and non-clinical. HIHI is an open door to all healthcare staff to assess ideas to solutions they have encountered in their work. HIHI acts as mentors and advises on taking an idea and developing it into a service or product. •Education: Through an active educational programme, HIHI is engaging right across hospital structures by teaching a new way of thinking to find creative solutions to health challenges. Delivering a series of five HIHI workshops and a diploma in healthcare innovation, HIHI is embedding an innovation culture in Irish healthcare.

We recently completed a national market exploration study for MedScan3D. The obvious focus for 3D is surgical but we knew we could support broader exploration for our client in both radiography and clinical engineering, through our national frontline network. As a direct result of this we hosted a follow-on clinical engineering ‘3D open day’ with Jacqui O' Connor and MedScan3D in Tallaght University Hospital yesterday. We work very closely with Leighton Curry and his team in Tallaght University Hospital so it was unsurprising that they had such an interest in diving deeper into the tech. Well done @neil tilley our HIHI clinical liasion onsite there who delivered this and splits his time with our clients and Leighton Curry’s team. Thanks to Health Service Executive, Lucy Nugent and John Kelly who facilitate this.
Award-winning Founder/Managing Director of MedScan3D, Winner; Galway Chambers Innovation Award, Network Galway STEM Professional, Finalist's: Irish Times Innovation, MedTech Innovation, TCT Healthcare Awards.
Yesterday, we shared insights with the team at Tallaght University Hospital on medical 3D printing applications across various departments. The workshop included an overview presentation, live demonstrations of a Markforged printer, and an EinScan_Japan scanner, which included scanning my foot! Displaying a variety of models sparked engaging discussions, paving the way for future collaborations. Grateful to Health Innovation Hub Ireland for their support, notably Neil Tilly. We are looking forward to more days like this to promote medical 3D printing. If you are interested in having a similar day, please get in touch; Info@MedScan3D.ie Cornelio Salvador Salinas Johannes Werner #HealthcareInnovation #3DPrinting #Collaboration

We were thrilled to host this group at our Dublin office in St James's Hospital Dublin, sharing all things health innovation in Ireland. Thank you to our CRF colleagues who facilitated a tour of the clinical research facility for the visitors also.
📸 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 🏥👇 Recently, our life science team, Nicol Hoppe and Hugh Fitzpatrick, had the privilege of co-organizing and hosting a delegation from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) in Ireland. The delegation included Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism, and Labor in MV, Reinhard Meyer, and Minister for Social Affairs, Health, and Sport in MV, Stefanie Drese. On the first day, in collaboration with IDA Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, and Health Research Board (HRB), we provided background information about Ireland’s healthcare sector. We discussed the support structures available for companies across the country. Following this, we held bilateral meetings and visited institutions within the Irish medtech ecosystem, including The Guinness Enterprise Centre and Health Innovation Hub Ireland. The GEC, in particular, caught the interest of a start-up hub from MV, WITENO GmbH. Our Irish HPSU, Amnexis, already have a presence in both hubs after winning an award in Rostock last year. We look forward to fostering further collaboration between these hubs. On the second day, we traveled to Galway to visit Aerogen, a world leader in superior aerosol drug delivery. The delegation then met with Barry Comerford, who shared insights into his work for the Manufacturing Engineering & Technician Apprenticeship consortium, among other topics. Our next stop was CÚRAM, SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices, which presented their research on wound care, diabetes, 3D printing, and other innovations. During our visit, we were joined by BioInnovate Ireland and the University of Galway, alongside two outstanding alumni: FeelTect and SymPhysis Medical. Additionally, two companies from the delegation—ZAS and ebiga-VISION GmbH—already have established partnerships with Irish companies and institutions. Well done to all involved. We look forward to supporting idea development among the finalists.
Last week, 9 teams of fantastic frontline innovators pitched transformative healthcare solutions at our online Spark Ignite final. The standard this year was exceptional, and it was inspiring to watch this group go from refining their problem definition and concepts at the Ignite workshops in April, to pitching far more developed solutions across numerous healthcare disciplines less than two months later. A huge congratulations to both winners Brendan Kelly with his project Transforming the imaging of Multiple Sclerosis with Artificial Intelligence and Tamara Gall with her solution ‘A Novel stent for Pancreatico-jejunostomy Anastomosis’. Incredible solutions with huge potential to improve patient outcomes. Thank you to our judges Eimear Galvin & Michelle Howard, and to Health Innovation Hub Ireland and The Guinness Enterprise Centre for collaborating with us this year. Finally, if you would like to hear more about how you can get involved with Spark initiatives like this, join us at the Spark Summit in Mansion House on June 20th.
