We're up to good. It's simple really. At giffgaff, doing good is our thing.

About us

We're up to good It's simple really. At giffgaff, doing good is our thing. In 2008, our founder decided that there was a better way to do mobile. And just like that, giffgaff was born. Since then, we’ve been doing mobile our own way. We put the power back in our members' hands, with flexible plans for all. From pay as you go, to monthly rolling, to good contracts, we make it easy for everyone to stay connected. And by the way, we’re powered by the O2 network. But the goodness doesn’t stop there. In 2022, 75% of all the phones we sold were refurbished, which is a win for our members’ pockets and helps them to be more sustainable. Together with our members, we’ve also supported people all over the UK in need of a helping hand, from large charities to smaller local ones. In fact, the word “giffgaff” is actually Scots for “mutual giving”. Rolls right off the tongue, don’t you think? If you like the sound of us and would like to join us, then check out our latest jobs.

Another brilliant story from Romy Smith at giffgaff around Women in Engineering day.

    Agile Coach

A tale of two giffgaffers, Wycombe High School & 'Women in Engineering Day'... ONE YEAR AGO we sat down in the giffgaff park to speak to giffgaff’s ‘women in engineering’. We heard their stories and asked a series of questions. However, there was only one that stuck: ‘if you had £1 million to increase the number of women in engineering from its current 12.9% ; how would you spend it?’ The answers were insightful and imaginative. There was lego and apps. Workshops and labs. Yet through the fun, the buzz and excitement, there was one common thread: the time to influence a young person's future is when they’re young. Before they enter the workplace... before they select their GCSEs... before they start to say ‘my favourite subject is…’ or (pause for effect) start to think 😥 ‘I’m not good at ______’ .... ‘I can’t see myself in _____' This felt big. It made our role as a company less clear: messier. However, I am happy to say, we listened to our experts. And so, ONE YEAR ON, me and my fellow giffgaffer, Dorothy O., took a turn back and walked into a ‘women in STEM’ week at Wycombe High School. This meant sharing our stories and the stories of many giffgaffers to a sea of secondary school students. So, what are our reflections ? We are proud that we stepped out of our comfort zone. That we changed our approach and chose impact over ease. However… did we make some assumptions along the way ? (Guilty! ) We underestimated their awareness, not just of technology but of the role of our company and (most surprisingly) the roles within it. Turns out ‘scrum master’ isn’t the funny or unfamiliar term (my joke needed it to be…). Rather, it is the job title of their parents and family friends. And could we have embraced some more of the agile and product practices we preach? (Of course, ‘there’s always room for improvement’…) We went in with a powerpoint to share our story. This was our key goal and we landed our key messages. We walked away with a clearer understanding of this ‘user group’ and their ‘context’. However, we didn’t walk away with an increased understanding about their concerns or problems to be solved so… Here’s to our follow up conversations ( 👋 ) & the next 2 steps…

At giffgaff we’re immensely proud of the amazing group of women that work in our engineering teams. #INWED24 Our engineers play a major role in creating the tech that impacts over 4 million members (that’s what we call our lovely customers), making a big difference in how they stay connected and communicate with their friends and loved ones. Our engineers worked on launching our new contract offering, creating a flexible promotions engine to offer even more value to our members, adding support for eSIMs, and much more (watch this space). We build our tech using some of the best modern technologies, relying on great software development practices that allow us to create high-quality products that our members love. Esra Kaya one of our engineering leads, said: “Working at giffgaff has been a highlight of my career. The company not only makes me feel valued but also prides itself on giving back to the community, making me incredibly proud to be part of the team”. It’s thanks to our engineers that we can bring our big ideas to life and disrupt industries in true giffgaff style! If this sounds like the sort of company you'd like to work for, check out our open roles on LinkedIn or reach out to our recruiter Melanie Saunders.

"Let's go baby 💁🏾♀️" Today we've launched a new partnership with giffgaff, which will see the mobile phone network tying in with the universe of drama Queenie, which launches tonight at 10pm on Channel 4 and Channel 4 streaming. Running from 4 June to 15 July, the ‘Pick Up, It’s Queenie’ campaign will run as the first ad (3 x 30’’) in break during Queenie’s run on linear television, alongside other contextual programming across Channel 4 and E4. The ads will also be present on the broadcaster’s YouTube and Snap Inc. pages.  The highly anticipated drama is based on Candice Carty-Williams' bestseller book of the same name, following protagonist Queenie as she navigates life, love and identity. The partnership was set up by the Channel 4 Sales Creative Hub team together with MG OMD, who both proactively brought the idea to giffgaff. Great work from Demi Leigh Mantell, Tahiera Overmeyer, Sophie Lloyd, Kate Manning, Michelle Halpin, Myia Fray, Annabel Barratt and Adu Lalouschek. Every year giffgaffers have the opportunity to take five paid volunteering days - in person or virtually - to give back and support the local community. Last week more than 100 of us volunteered in one form or another. Around 30 people donned a high vis and litter picker in support of Keep Britain Tidy, others rolled up their sleeves at the local allotment to support Mind and some helped out Trinity Homeless Projects by cooking, gardening and painting. One of our volunteers, Kate Hatcher, said that "listening to stories from residents at Olympic House (the temporary homeless shelter run by Trinity) was the highlight of my week and has given me a deeper understanding of the issues faced by people experiencing homelessness. I'm proud that our efforts mean that people now have a space to relax and receive support in." It's such an enriching day, and also a great reason to bring us all together.

Alongside MG OMD and a few other industry partners, we've successfully launched our Responsible Reach Media Principles - our way of being Up to Good in the marketing/media space. By mindfully choosing who we partner with and what channels we advertise on we've already saved 7,314kg of CO2, vs traditional media plans, for our Up to Good brand launch alone.    But as a brand that’s Up To Good, we wanted to push ourselves further and deliver a net zero media plan. And that's where the Up to Good Collective Fund was born. Working with those same partners, we’ve built a Fund that's linked to our media plans, with the ambition to mitigate residual emissions that cannot yet be reduced or removed. Working with Ecologi | B Corp™, we’ll initially be using the Fund to support three verified, high impact projects that deliver both environmental and community benefits. A little bit about the programmes: - Distributing fuel efficient cookstoves in Kenya, the ‘Jikokoa’ cookstoves, reduce charcoal consumption by 64%, helping to ease the impact on local forests, and saving local families money. The stoves reduce indoor air pollution by 65%, generating health benefits for the families. All of the stoves are made locally in a solar-powered facility, which provides over a thousand jobs for local people - Installing and maintaining community water boreholes in Eritrea in Africa. One in nine people around the world do not have access to clean water. Only 19% of the population have access to clean water in this area. This project will provide long term access to safe and clean drinking water to hundreds of households. The safe water ensures households consume less firewood during the process of water purification, reducing greenhouse gas emissions - Restoring mangrove ecosystems in Pakistan. The project’s activities assist these communities to adapt to the probable impacts of climate change. The region is home to globally threatened species including the Indus River dolphin and the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin   We're excited to continue this work with our partners next year to make a positive impact. More on that to come...   #UptoGood #ESG #Sustainability #NetZero
