Our Classroom to Care (C2C) project, funded by Takeda Pharmaceutical, recently donated educational materials to the Vicenta Maria Private Higher School of Health in Ségou, Mali. C2C is improving access to high-quality maternal and child health care in Mali, Niger, and Senegal by improving the preservice training of #nurses and #midwives in 12 private health schools. A special handover ceremony included the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Higher Education, the representative of the Governor of Segou, the Mayor, and the President of the Association of Private Health Schools. Principals of partner health schools, as well as the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FMPOS), were also present to receive equipment, including simulation models and computer equipment, aimed at improving student education. A live demonstration of the equipment showed its immediate usefulness to the new skills labs before the symbolic handover to the various partners. A new Global Health: Science and Practice Journal report details how The Challenge Initiative helped local municipalities implement Family Planning Special Days to reach new contraceptive users, particularly adolescents & youth! Read the free article: https://lnkd.in/e665H5jz Cities in francophone West Africa have a high prevalence of poverty, low rates of contraceptive use, and high unmet need for family planning. Family Planning Special Days (FPSDs) educate, inform, and mobilize the community for family planning while delivering free services. Midwives primarily conduct FPSDs, with community health workers, nurses, and doctors. The report analyzes 1,046 FPSDs held in 452 health facilities in 10 cities, and shows: ⭐ 71,669 contraceptive users were served ⭐ Almost half (46%) of users were adolescents and youth ages 15-24, representing 51% of the overall 58% of new users of contraception ⭐ Cities contributed 35% of the overall cost of organizing the days (approximately US $252,839). "These results should spur municipalities and health systems to institutionalize the FPSD intervention by integrating it into country policies, increasing availability of contraceptive products and consumables, and continuing to provide financing," say the authors. Last week CARDIO4Dakar held a closeout event to celebrate its successes! Funded by the Novartis Foundation and led by IntraHealth International, CARDIO4Dakar partnered with the Senegalese Ministry of Health to treat and manage hypertension in Dakar and decrease acute cardiovascular events, such as strokes. Over the last 3 years, CARDIO4Dakar: - Diagnosed 26,102 people with hypertension, and treated 24,946, with 91% increase in screening and diagnosis and a 92% increase in treatment since 2018 - Developed Saytu Tension, a mobile app, web app, and chatbot to accelerate early detection and improve prevention and care of cardiovascular disease - Trained 714 health workers in hypertension and risk factor management - Launched the CARDIO4Dakar Toolkit to provide comprehensive guidance on sustaining the CARDIO strategy. With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, IntraHealth International has launched INSPiRE: Women's & Newborn Health, the third phase of a successful, cost-effective initiative to integrate health services in Francophone West Africa and save and improve the lives of mothers and babies. Providing a comprehensive package of essential health services—including family planning, nutrition, and maternal and infant care—during a single visit avoids missed opportunities and makes services more accessible, especially for women who live in rural and remote areas and must carry their babies long distances to reach a health facility. “The INSPiRE initiative has already helped double new family planning users, triple uptake of postpartum family planning, and nearly quadruple well-baby visits. says Marguerite Ndour, INSPiRE director. “We’re grateful for renewed funding and support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This work is not only critical for progress in the region, but it’s also a model to achieve greater impact around the world." This robust initiative now being implemented in 607 health facilities in eight of the nine Ouagadougou Partnership countries: Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Togo. More than 95% of these health facilities are located in rural and disadvantaged areas. Here are 🔦highlights🔦 from Philippe Guinot's remarks yesterday during Geneva Digital Health Day! Alongside #WHA77, he shared IntraHealth International's #DigitalHealth expertise during the health equity panel. 🔦 Strengthening Health Workforce in Refugee Settings Guinot highlighted our efforts in #Chad, where we implemented the iHRIS software to manage nearly a thousand health workers amid a massive influx of Sudanese refugees. iHRIS helps the Ministry of Health track staff, training, salary payments, and redeployment, aiming for nationwide health workforce management.   🔦Technical Challenges and Solutions Implementing digital health initiatives remotely poses challenges that were mitigated by regular on-site visits and a focus on local ownership. Guinot stressed the importance of capacity building over direct implementation to ensure sustainability, with local partners prioritizing and funding the initiatives.   🔦Collaboration for Health Equity Guinot emphasized the need for collaboration between governments, the private sector, NGOs, and communities. True partnerships should prioritize local health leaders' ambitions and focus on building resilient health systems rather than disease-specific interventions, fostering trust and equitable cooperation.   🔦Future Directions For digital health to impact health equity, it must prioritize patient care (by taking a patient-centric approach) and support frontline health workers. Tools that aid diagnosis, inventory management and patient care can help build resilient health systems, addressing the evolving needs of patients and advancing health equity.
