D&M Exclusive : Shanghaî Disneyland Envision to Build Pandora - The Land of Avatar Near SDL Adventure Isle - Now Updated With Answers to Comments

We'll start the week on D&M by some exclusive insider infos and this time it's all about Shanghaî Disneyland! D&M has learned from a very reliable source that Shanghaî Disneyland execs envision to bring Pandora as a new land for Shanghaî Disneyland. Let's make something clear from the start: "envision" means "thinking seriously about it", it doesn't mean "have decided to". The fact that Disney plan to build more Avatar lands in others theme parks is no big surprise in itself but what makes the infos more interesting is what i've been told:

"Shanghai Disneyland executives are highly considering an Avatar land for SDL and to place Pandora behind the Adventure Isle land. They came to Disney's Animal Kingdom a bit more than 10 months ago to have a tour of Pandora at Disney's Animal Kingdom but they plan to build only at SDL Pandora "Flight of Passage" and a different version of a smaller kid ride. The reason why they wouldn't build the "Navi' River Journey" boat ride is because they already have two water rides right next to each other. They also said they could look into more interactive plants that were originally planned for Pandora at DAK and not added for budget reasons. It was confirmed by a close friend of mine, who was sent to open Shanghai Disneyland, that there were talks as early as 2015 to plan works on a Pandora land coming to SDL. Now, today 2018, executives have to look and consider if Pandora is successful and if it will work with Chinese culture? They already have Soaring at Adventure Isle, so do they need another screen motion simulator right next door to it? Only time will tell what is next. They are due for an E-ticket expansion very soon, though."

Couldn't be more explicit, right? Now, what you need to keep in mind is that Disney will certainly not build any new Pandora land in others Disney theme parks before James Cameron's Avatar sequels will be released, to see how successful they'll be, 11 years after the Avatar original film released in 2009. James Cameron is shooting all four sequels back-to-back and the release dates are set for 18 December 2020 for the first sequel and then 17 December 2021, 20 December 2024, and 19 December 2025 for the three others. So, Disney will wait at least to see the B.O of the first sequel released in December 2020 before deciding to bring Pandora at SDL - and may be also at DLP WDS, by the way.
Of course Shanghaî Disneyland being in main land China all will depends of the success of the movie in China and how popular it will be with Chinese audiences. But, considering that Disney now own FOX it's a safe bet to think that Disney will launch a huge marketing campaign to make sure that the sequels will be successful - not only to make as much as possible money out of the movies themselves but also because a success of the sequels will open the gates to others Pandora lands in others Disney theme parks.

That said, we're happy to hear that SDL execs envision to bring Pandora at SDL but let's see if they have enough room to build it, as Pandora is not specially a small land. To check this i've been on Google Earth where you can find tools to calculate the size of any land and at Animal Kingdom the size - in square meters, sorry, but 1 square meter = 10.76 square foot for those of you "speaking" in square foot - and the surface of DAK Pandora makes around 60670 sqm. See screen capture below.

So, now let's see if SDL has a land available making 60670 square meters. You remember that SDL execs would like to put the Pandora land near Adventure Isle. Considering that on the left of Adventure Isle there is Treasure Cove, the Pirates land, then the location for a Pandora land should be instead on the right of Adventure Isle where they have indeed a big piece of empty land that anyone coming out of SDL train station can see. I had the good idea to shoot a picture of it the first time i went to visit the park - see picture below, the brown structure in the background is the lift for Roaring Rapids.

And how big is that land, you ask? Well, according to Google Earth ( see picture below ) the size of the land is 74788 sqm! Bingo! They have more room than the 60670 needed square meters to build Pandora there, so yes Pandora - The Land of Avatar will fit in that land.

Yes, but... i remember seeing in one of the early renderings or plans that they had initially planned an hotel there, and then changed their mind and didn't built it. Are they keeping this land for a future hotel or for a Pandora land? Future will tell but if they choose to finally build an additional hotel there, is there others lands at Shanghaî Disneyland where they could build Pandora? Actually, yes, there is at least two other locations at SDL which are kept for future expansions. The first one is behind Fantasyland but it makes "only" 59884 sqm - and this because i did a polygon big enough to have 60670 sqm... But i don't think they will build Pandora there.

The other land is also in the back of the park and this one makes 52617 sqm, and here also because i did a polygon with the biggest surface possible.

I don't think they will build Pandora there too, the best location is really near Adventure Isle and thematically the transition from the tropical theming of Adventure Isle to Pandora would be perfect.
Now when could we expect an announcement from Shanghaî Disneyland IF they still plan to build Pandora? The first sequel being released in December 2020, it means that by Summer 2021 Disney will know how successful the movie has been in China. Why Summer 2021? Because 2021 is a D23 Expo year - the next one is August 2019, so the one after will be in Summer 2021. And we know that Disney Parks keep its biggest announcements for the D23 Expos, when they're not done before. So, if you want to place your bets on a SDL Pandora land announcement, you can place them - not all your bets but let's say half of them - on the 2021 D23 Expo which, if they announce it there will put a land opening around 2024.  In the meantime, cross your fingers!

EDITING 8/29 with answers to some readers comments posted to this article: Mitch said: "If they removed the Tarzan show, which I would imagine would be earmarked as "temporary", I could envision it going in between Pirates and Adventure Isle. It would require relocation of one backstage building and a little landfill, but could see that being an easier location to access." and Matthieu also said: "They might consider expanding between the Tarzan Show and Treasure Cove. I doubt the expansion pad next to the park entrance is for anything else than a hotel."

Here is the problem: As we've seen they need at least 60000 sqm for a Pandora land, so i've been on Google Earth to check how big is the space available behind the Tarzan show theatre, between Treasure Cove and Adventure Isle. There is a big water reservoir behind to which they won't touch and plenty of backstage buildings too. If they don't remove one of the buildings they have roughly 26225 sqm - see picture below.

And if they remove one backstage building located between a parking lot and an apparently empty land there is still only 34150 sqm. So, in both cases, far from the 60670 sqm needed. Even if they would build a smaller Pandora, they won't cut it in half. So, i doubt that they will build it here.

Matthieu also said: "The raft ride creates a huge berm and there's no room for a pathway towards another land behind it. What do you think?"

What i think is that it's right that Roaring Rapids raft ride creates a huge berm and there is hardly some room to create a path to reach the available land behind. On this plan, putting Pandora in the back of Fantasyland or Treasure Cove would make it more easily accessible, but ...that's not what SDL execs have in plans - though they can change their mind. So, let's see how they could do. They certainly won't create a path behind Roaring Rapids mountain, there is the Soaring show building there. But they could easily create one on the bottom of Adventure Isle ( see white arrow on the picture below ). It would need to remove some Roaring Rapids queue structures but that part will be easy to do.

The other solution would be to create a path which would go under the Roaring Rapids lift structure to reach the land behind ( blue arrow ), but i'm not sure they can do that, both technically and because there might be some Camp Discovery structure there or it would mean that guests would need to enter Camp Discovery to reach the other land and i hardly see SDL Imagineers doing that. The first solution is probably easier, though in both cases they would need to cross the backstage road but they probably can change it with a backstage road which would go all around Pandora.

Watch Tourists Rob Balloons From Shanghaî Disneyland Staff Because They’re Too Expensive

What should you do if something is deemed too expensive? Most of us would naturally say, “Don’t buy lah!”, but not for these Chinese tourists at Shanghaî Disneyland:

From WOB and Shangahiist: On August 23, a daylight robbery happened in Shanghai Disneyland where a group of tourists robbed all the balloons from the hand of a worker because the balloons were deemed too expensive.

According to Chinese media, as reported by Oriental Daily, a Disneyland staff was holding a bunch of balloons while walking towards the crowd in the afternoon. It was reported that one balloon costs about 80 Yuan (approx. $11.75) and the tourists thought the price was a total rip-off. So, they decided to help themselves to the balloons by snatching them away from the worker. Within 10 seconds, all the balloons were gone.

The embarrassing scene was captured on camera. In the 17-second video, visitors were seen swarming the balloon seller and running away with a balloon in hand along with a big smile on their face.

Shanghai Disneyland confirmed the incident with the media and said they couldn’t comprehend the behaviour of the tourists. What’s more mind-boggling is that some Chinese netizens actually think that it was Disneyland’s fault for setting the prices too high. “If anyone’s to be blamed, it should be Disneyland because the balloons are so expensive!” a netizen who claimed to be at the scene said.

On the other hand, some netizens reckoned that the robbery was indeed a shameful incident. “If the balloons are too pricey, the right thing to do is to just walk away, and not to rob the worker,” another netizen said.

Those of the looters who traveled to Disneyland by subway will not be able to take their balloons home with them as the Shanghai Metro has a regulation against balloons in the subway trains. Instead, they can make a profit by selling the balloons to enterprising merchants who position themselves outside the metro station entrances.

The opportunistic hawkers offer to purchase the balloons for half the cost the guest paid in the park. Then, they take the balloons to Disneytown and sell them off at just under the park rate.

Shanghaî Disneyland Update : First Pictures and Videos of SDL Toy Story Land ! Now Edited With New TSL Pictures!

Shanghaî Disneyland Toy Story Land will open next month on April 26 but as we'll see it seem that the land may be already in soft opening mode. I've found pictures and an interesting video which is in fact the WDI BIM ( Building Information Modeling ) video showing the design of the whole land. It's a very short video only lasting a few second but i did for you some screen shots to have a closer look at it in details.

The video starts at the entrance of Toy Story land where stands a giant Woody - in dark grey, on the right - which will look like the same one located  at the entrance of HKDL TSL.

Then we arrive to the Woody's Roundup area where guests will find a new TSL ride - here on the left of the pictures - similar to Mater's Junkyard Jamboree at DCA but with a totally different theming.

We do have the first pictures of Woody's Roundup with the lovely little Bullseyes, posted on Twitter by DONGDONG.

More pictures posted by DONGDONG today!

And, guess what, i just found a first - although very short  - video showing the ride in action and apparently with guests waiting in the queue line so it seems that SDL Toy Story Land might be already in soft-opening or in tests mode with SDL cast members...

Moving now towards Rex Racer and you'll note ( in red ) the kind of barn on its right;

New picture of Rex Racer!

On the left, the Slinky Dog Spin ride;

First picture of Slinky Dog Spin!

The famous giant Pixar ball is here...

...and we have a first picture of it with Rex Racer in the background.

Moving toward the other entrance of Toy Story Land...

...where stands a giant Jessie, similar to the one coming at DCA Pixar Pier.

Below, Disney pictures and a video showing the arrival of the giant Woody and Jessie statues and their installation at Toy Story land entrances.

SDL Toy Story Land is opening officially April 26 and the land is already on the new Shanghaî Disneyland visitor's guide map!

Shanghaî Disneyland Update : Toy Box Café Opens Today, Bringing Guests an Early Taste of Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land

At Shanghaî Disneyland, Toy Box Café, located in Toy Story Land opens today, bringing to SDL guests an early taste of Toy Story Land, and just in time to bring more restaurant capacity to the park for the expected crowds coming for the Chinese new year happening Feb 15.  The location was existing at SDL opening but it has been entirely re-themed. Here is the full SDL press release.

Shanghai, February 9, 2018 – Toy Box Café, the first experience to open at the new Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land, welcomes its first official guests today, giving guests a taste of big toy fun as they dine on freshly inspired meals and beverages themed to the hit Disney-Pixar animated “Toy Story” film series. Toy Box Café is a playful outdoor restaurant in Shanghai Disneyland’s highly anticipated Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land, which will immerse guests in a world of toys.

The new Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land will be the seventh themed land at Shanghai Disneyland and the first major expansion of the park since its grand opening in 2016. The story of Toy Box Café is inspired by the imaginative play that Toy Story’s fun loving little boy, Andy, always enjoys. Andy was out in his backyard playing with his beloved toys, when he noticed he was hungry. Before going back into his house for a snack, he set up a café playset for his toys to enjoy, by arranging some of his favorite toy packages, and toy furniture into his very own Toy Box Café. These giant toy packages - for Buzz Lightyear, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, and Lotso - are the perfect serving areas for this playful restaurant offering a wide variety of meals. This brand new immersive dining experience will transport Shanghai Disneyland guests into a world of toys while they enjoy delicious delights in a picnic-like area dining at oversized toy tables and chairs.

The newly opened restaurant will offer a diverse menu with delightful tastes for guests. Upon arrival, guests will have the choice of four themed foods on the menu represented by characters from the beloved franchise: Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head and Lotso. For example, guests can order the Alien Spicy Seafood Pizza at Mrs. Potato Head’s counter or have Lotso’s Financier Cake at Lotso’s “Toy Box”. Guests will also be able to choose from a mix of both traditional Chinese cuisine and western treats such as Gong Bao Chicken with Rice, Sichuan Spiced Chicken with Potato Chips, Braised Pork Rib, Baked Seafood with Rice and Sweet Potato with Marshmallows. Inspired by Lotso and his signature strawberry scent, guests can also enjoy special beverage and dessert, including Strawberry Milk and Bubble Waffle with Strawberry Ice-cream.

The opening of Toy Box Café brings guests an early taste of the theme park’s seventh themed land and makes the dining options in the park even more plentiful starting from the Chinese New Year holiday. Set to open on April 26, 2018, Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land will also feature three new attractions, Slinky Dog Spin, Rex’s Racer and Woody’s Round-Up, a uniquely themed character greeting area, Meeting Post, and a fun, immersive shopping location, Al’s Toy Barn. Get ready for playtime!

Walk Inside Shanghaî Disneyland Very Private Club 33 Thanks to Exclusive Pictures by Heather Concannon

As you may know Shanghaî Disneyland has a Club 33 with a restaurant and a balcony offering a great view from above on SDL parade or the fireworks of the evening show "Ignite the Magic". What you may NOT know is that it's impossible not only to have access if you're not a member of SDL Club 33 but also to shoot pictures inside. I know it because i've tried when i've visited Shanghaî Disneyland in August 2016 and, even if after introducing myself as Disney and more editor,  the Club 33 cast-members refused to let me go upstairs and became hysterical when i shot just one picture, that you'll see below.

All this to say that we must be very very VERY grateful to Heather Concannon as, thanks to Heather, who kindly authorized me to post them in this D&M article we have the first pictures ever of the inside of Shanghaî Disneyland Club 33! To thanks Heather for these great pictures, make sure to visit Heather Instagram page HERE, her Facebook page HERE and her Twitter page HERE.

So, here we go for the visit of Shanghaî Disneyland Club 33, shall we?

On the picture above Heather Concannon stands under the Club 33 archway which is located in a corner of Mickey Avenue, SDL Main Street: "You made a left and next to Shanghai's version of the Emporium they had a little doorway that said 33 above it" says Heather " You had to ring a doorbell to get in." The picture below showing the gorgeous art-deco ceiling light of SDL Club 33 reception on the ground floor is the only one that i could shot when i was at SDL last year.

Now, SDL Club 33 restaurant has a business casual dress code, so you can't get in wearing your park clothes and Heather and her family had to drop off their bags and change clothes before entering SDL Club 33 restaurant.  The picture below shows the atrium where Heather and her group waited to be seated.

Actually, Shanghai's Club 33 theme is inspired by Disney's 1940's "Fantasia." and the next picture shows the staircase as view from the first floor with stunning chandeliers and the sugar plum fairies from Fantasia Nutcracker Suite.

The room where they had dinner was Club 33 Garden View room,  a big circular room filled with round tables and a lovely floral centerpiece.

"I took a thousand photos of the centerpiece, because I thought it was beautiful," said Heather Concannon. According to Heather "The entire space felt classier than what you may be used to seeing inside a Disney park restaurant".

There is too more private, intimate rooms with curtains off to the sides, offering a more romantic setting, with always gorgeous artwork on each walls.

Heather Concannon and her group ate at a large round table in the room, large enough to seat 10 people.

The napkin holder matched perfectly with the design on the plates, which, just like the coasters on the table have the number 33 printed on them.

You may wonder how Heather and her family who are not members of SDL Club 33 succeeded to enter and had dinner. Well, actually they were in Shanghaî Disneyland with Adventures by Disney and apparently the tour include a dinner at the Club 33, which is good to know. Because of that they ordered off of a pre-selected menu with a five-course meal, and here is a picture of the menu, with a choice between a short rib or fish for the main entree. They were also given two glasses of red or white house wine with their meal.

The appetizer was a grapefruit sorbet with green apple wasabi granite and dill oil.

One of the main entrées was a slow-cooked Australian wagyu short rib with chili glaze, apple salad, and parsnip purée, and the picture below shows the short rib choice. According to Heather each part of the five-course meal was a small portion so you didn't get filled up too quickly.

After the dinner, the Club 33 balcony allowed them have a unique view of the park, with the Tron ride on the left, SDL Enchanted Story Book castle, and Gardens of Imagination carousel on the right, which, by the way, also has a "Fantasia" theme. "Once you walk through the restaurant, they have a firework-viewing area. That's what the balcony is for", said Heather.

"The view is worth it, especially because it's so crazy to watch the fireworks in front of the castle [in Disney World] these days," said Heather. "It was nice to be able to watch it and hear the music and experience it with just our group and two other couples."

You can also go home with some Club 33 souvenirs like one of the coasters with the 33 number on it but "They had a store where you could purchase a polo, a tie, a bag," says Heather. "I bought a pen, a notebook, and a mug because I figured I'm never doing this again in my life."

I can't thank enough Heather Concannon for these exclusive pictures of Shanghaî Disneyland Club 33, a place where most of us probably will never get in and, again, make sure to visit Heather Instagram page HERE, her Facebook page HERE and her Twitter page HERE.
