More About an Indiana Jones Land Coming To Disney's Hollywood Studios

In its yesterday's article HERE Orlando Weekly talked about the long rumored Indiana Jones land which may finally "find a home at Disney's Hollywood Studios". Some months ago, another rumor was saying that Animal Kingdom Dinoland and the Dinosaurs attraction could be transformed also in an Indiana Jones land, but according to Orlando Weekly chances are that it will happen finally at DHS which is certainly the most logical choice for a land based on an iconic movie hero.

If it happens it will be in the area where the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular currently is, and according to OW the land could eventually "include the area where Star Tours is currently located, as well as most other aspects of the Echo Lake section of the park. Replacing not only the stunt show but also the area around it, the new Indiana Jones mini-land would be roughly 8 acres in size or about half the size of the Animal Kingdom proposal."

Orlando Weekly goes on saying that "Multiple attractions would be featured in the new land, likely including a signature E-ticket style attraction... ...the signature attraction for the Indy mini-land will be an indoor family attraction of some type that will use a previously realized ride system in a new way. Few details on the specifics of this ride have been shared by insiders, but it’s thought that this ride will compete with the two Star Wars rides as one of the park’s flagship attractions. As with Animal Kingdom’s plan, the DHS one does seem to include an outdoor roller coaster attraction. Both Disneyland Paris and Tokyo DisneySea have Intamin versions of the Pinfari TL-59 looping coasters."

Well, well, all this sounds good and, as i wanted to have a look at how big an Indy land like this would be, i've been on Google Earth checking this and here is two versions, the first one below include Star Tours ( which would be removed or deleted ) and this version will make an area of 41100 square meters ( 10 acres ), including some buildings currently backstage but leaving a bit of space for the needed backstage road going around the park. Click on the picture to see it in larger size.

The other version below does not include Star Tours and in both versions i've kept Echo Lake as i think they will keep it or at least a big part of it as they need to keep some water area in a park which don't have that many. And i also kept the building on the other side of Echo Lake. With this second version it makes an area of 26300 square meters ( 6.5 acres ).

In both versions they'll definitely have room enough to build an Indy land with a big Indiana Jones E-Ticket ride, and if they build Indiana Jones Adventure they will need room for the big IJA show building so let's see how big is the one at Disneyland Anaheim. As you can see below, according to Google Earth it makes ( ride show building only, not counting the long queue decor leading to it ) around 7680 SQM ( 1.89 acres ).

Now, if at DHS they build the ride show building backstage near the parking lot ( like they did at Disneyland, by the way ) as i'm pretty sure they will do, let's see how many square meters it would be. And as you can see it would make roughly 8170 sqm ( 2 acres ). So, it could works perfectly and they still would have an in-park area of 33000 sqm or 18000 sqm - depending if they delete Star Tours or not - to build the Indy roller coaster and a restaurant and shop.

Talking about an Indiana Jones coaster similar to DLP Temple du Péril or TDS Raging Spirits, Orlando Weekly says "If it does make its way to Orlando, the coaster will likely feature dual sides, similar to Animal Kingdom’s Primeval Whirl spinning coaster and Magic Kingdom’s Dumbo spinner." And this reminded me that, in fact, Disneyland Paris Adventureland Temple du Péril originally designed by WDI Imagineers Tom Morris and Chris Tietz was supposed to include TWO different coasters running on two different tracks, and for budget reasons only one was built at DLP - though shortly after the Temple du Péril opening the attraction was so successful that DLP wanted to add the second coaster and never had the budget to do it. I even saw at WDI at the end of the 1990's the model of this second coaster and it would have been a great addition for DLP. And if you want to know how it would have looked - and how it could look if they build this two coasters at Disney's Hollywood Studios, i even have the rendering - as it is in my Disneyland Paris book. On the WDI artwork below, the existing Temple du Péril coaster is on the left and the one which was never built is in the background on the right. Note that the second coaster was not supposed to have a looping, it was a very different track, which made the whole concept very interesting.

At Disneyland Paris the Temple du Péril makes around 2754 sqm ( not counting all the queue area ). If they have to double the temples at DHS that should make around 6000 sqm and let's add 1500 sqm of queue decor, which would make a total of around 7500 sqm, more or less. Considering, as i've said above that they still have between 18000 and 33000 sqm available it means that building the Indy coaster will be possible and this with TWO different tracks running on two different temples - something which would be definitely needed at WDW to have enough hour capacity.

In two words, they have enough room at Disney's Hollywood Studios to build a 8000 sqm Indiana Jones Aventure ride - or equivalent E-Ticket - plus the Indy roller coaster in its original two coasters versions, plus an Indy restaurant and shop and they'll still have room for plenty of lush tropical vegetation.

And by the way, if they build the Indiana Jones coasters what would be a great idea would be to include some great decor scenes they didn't built at DLP, like the one below.

Now, the question is: will they build an Indiana Jones land? Considering the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 movie and the usual taste of Disney for synergy, the answer is: most probably. And will it be at Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios? I put my bets on Disney's Hollywood Studios because it's the place where it makes the more sense to create an Indy land - it's still supposed to be a park about movies, after all, and even with the Star Wars Galaxy Edge addition the park will still need more rides - and also because the stunt show is one of the last remaining attractions from the old era of the Disney's MGM Studios. I like it a lot but after more than 25 years of existence i think it will get the axe.  We'll see which park will be the lucky winner of an Indiana Jones land, in the meantime let us know what you think in the comments section below!

Disney's Hollywood Studios Toy Story Land "Woody’s Lunch Box" Artwork Unveiled

The Disney Parks Blog share a look at a new area planned for Disney's Hollywood Studios Toy Story Land that haven’t been unveiled until now – Woody’s Lunch Box.

"When Toy Story Land opens in Summer 2018 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, guests will shrink to the size of a toy and explore all of the fun (and toys!) Andy has constructed in his backyard. This story continues at Woody’s Lunch Box, where Andy has used his lunch box and thermos to create a walk-up quick-service window that will serve up tasty meals and old-fashioned soda floats. In the rendering above, you can see that Woody’s Lunch Box – like the rest of Toy Story Land – has been adorably strewn about with some of Andy’s favorite toys and items from his lunch. You can even spot a green army man on a nearby lookout tower, keeping watch for Andy’s return. The Walt Disney World Resort will partner with Mini Babybel to bring this location to life".

WDW Disney's Hollywood Studios: New Entrance Road, Possible Star Wars Hotel Location, and more

Always thanks to D&M reader Cleve North we have new pics showing where will be the new road and entry point for WDW Disney's Hollywood Studios. We've seen yesterday that they're clearing the land for parking expansion and you my already know that they're rerouting the entire entry road from World Drive, so the new road will completely avoid the expansion area now. On the picture below you can see where will be the new entry road and the new entry point to the car park.

The next picture with "A, B, C and D" is not coming from Cleve and they got the land clearing wrong - but it does also show the new road going in from a new location.

Finally, Cleeve did new indications on a picture posted by Blog Mickey showing better where could be built a Star Wars Resort, which would be located in front of the upcoming DHS Star Wars Land which will open in 2019. Please note that nothing official has been announced yet for this Star Wars hotel, so we're just betting that it might be built there.

Thanks again to Cleve to have take the time to do these pics!

WDW Disney's Hollywood Studios Celebrate Its 28th Anniversary - Rare Original Artwork

WDW Disney's Hollywood Studios celebrates its 28h Anniversary and here is a great artwork article with plenty of original artwork for a park which at that time was known as Disney MGM Studios. The first artwork above below is of course a park overview, without the Sunset Boulevard which will be added later. Next rendering is another one showing the whole park, from a different angle, and probably an early concept...

...just like this one, showing the soundstage and support buildings.

This one shows DHS Hollywood Boulevard...

And on this one we can see a "Pooh Hollywood corner"...was the shop really built? I'm not sure, but tell me if i'm wrong...

This next one is a bird's eye view of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular building.

And this rendering shows the final explosion scene.

Now, here are some interesting renderings, as i think - once again, please correct me if my wrong - that they're showing never realised attractions. And the one below shows a kind of "filming tour" where guests would have looked the real shooting of a movie behind windows,  just like in the animation tour you were able to watch Disney artists working.

Here is another one, probably from the same attraction concept.

Does anyone know to which attraction this next one is related - it seems to be the filming of a tv show...

As well as this one, maybe the preshow of the one above...

The caption on the original slide for the one below is: "Sounds effects theatre"

This one is for the Tram Tour attraction, moving in New York Street.

And here are three renderings for the Catastrophe Canyon scene.

Next, is a rendering for the now extinct Honey i Shrunk the Kids playground.

Here is a picture of the model, with two WDI Imagineers...

And another picture, shot during the making of the HISTK playground.

This rendering is also related to an attraction based on the Honey i Shrunk the Kids movie, and i don't remember if it was finally built or not...i think it was - or was it not? Anyone knows?

Next is a tribute to the Great Movie ride and the Chinese Theater replica, always with original artwork and great behind the scenes photos of imagineers at work.

Above is the artwork for something that was probably a mural painting, and below a rendering of the Chinese Theatre area.

Another artwork showing the Hollywood Boulevard with the Chinese Theatre in the background.

Next artwork is a rare rendering for the Singing in the rain scene.

And of course, this one is for the John Wayne scene.

Here is the artwork for the gangsters scene.

And this is the artwork for the final Wizard of Oz scene.

Before we have a look to some behind the scenes pictures, here is a great story told to me by a friend imagineer about the "Casablanca" scene of the ride, and more specifically about the real plane one can see in the decor:
"The Casablanca scene has the real Casablanca Lockheed Electra plane used in the movie - and the tail section is in the WDW Jungle Cruise. The plane was located by Malcolm Cobb of WDI/ California, in Texas. Malcolm got the Lockheed registry of all the planes and their history and present owners and set out looking. On this Texas plane, no one had any idea it was the real plane until they ran its serial numbers and found it had been registered to the movie studio that made the film at that time. This was done after the purchase was completed. When Malcolm found it, it had been sitting for some time and not running. Another owner nearby owned three of these planes and wanted much more money for his as they were flyable. Malcolm didnt need one that flew and bought the cheapest one, being the real on. When the man who owned the three planes found out what he had missed, he was pretty upset at himself, as it had been right next to his backyard."

The first behind the scenes picture below shows an Imagineer at work on the Busby Berkeley opening scene.

When we think about an Indiana Jones attraction, we generally think about Indiana Jones Adventure, or the Epic stunt spectacular, or the Temple du péril but we often forget that there is a great Indy scene in the Great Movie ride! Here, one WDI Imagineer is at work on one of the giant Anubis statues.

Other Imagineers at work in the same room.

Final touch to the Ark of the Covenant scene.

Inside WDI workhouse, an Imagineer measuring the beautiful Ark of the Covenant replica.

Putting in place the Egyptian mummies...

Final touch on the same mummies...

Almost cheek to cheek between a lovely Imagineer and a pretty well done mummy...

No, it's not Tarzan and Jane, but two Imagineers at work on the vegetation of the Tarzan scene.

Some years later, the Sunset Boulevard and the Tower of Terror were added to Disney MGM Studios, here is the original artwork for it.

First is a series of renderings for the Sunset Boulevard facades, and note that the one above shows a building that was never built.

On the next one is the Carthay Circle Theater, which was replicated at Disney-Mgm and which is now the icon of Disney's California Adventure

Here is another one, showing the Tower of terror in the background, and the Carthay Circle Theater on the right.

This next one is a beautiful night view, and the Carthay Circle Theater is now on the left!

This rendering seems to indicate that a "Disney film festival" was envisioned by WDI Imagineers in the Carthay Circle Theater. Just like on the rendering above, note the red tramway on the right. Never built, guests can find it now at Disney's California Adventure.

On this next rendering, have a close look at the "orange grove" area on the top left, envisioned but finally never realized.

Let's have a look now to Tower of terror renderings, beginning by these two early concepts. As you can see , the building had a very different design.

Here is another TOT concept art, pretty rare, too.

The next renderings are others concept, closer to the final version that we know.

This next one is really interesting as it shows how the ride was previously envisioned and, as you can see, the Twilight Zone room was supposed to be in the basement and not at the top of the building.

Let's end with a picture of the model that you probably already know, but always beautiful.

Before i leave, i would like to answer to some of you who asked me where i've got all these Disney's Mgm Studios artworks: Almost all Disney MGM artworks you can see on D&M was delivered to me during WDW 25th Anniversary press event by WDW photo library.
At that time it was still possible for the journalists to go at the photo library, choose the slides they wanted and ask if it was possible to get them. These ones, showing original artworks and making-of pictures needed an approval from WDW Imagineering, but they gave their approval and the slides were sent to me in Paris. That's the whole story, and for the choice of the renderings themselves, you just have to thanks my good taste!
