BREAKING: Shanghai Disneyland is closing starting tomorrow Jan 25, until further notice, and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort stops all meet and greet with "face characters"

BREAKING: Shanghai Disneyland is closing starting tomorrow Jan 25, until further notice, and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort stops all meet and greet with all "face characters":

That’s it, due to the coronavirus outbreak in China Shanghai Disney Resort is temporarily closing Shanghai Disneyland, and it’s sad to say but whatever is the angle you look at it it’s probably the best they can do, keeping the park open with the expected crowds for the Chinese New Year had too much risks that the virus would spread from guest to guests, and if the park become known as a place where people have catch the virus, SDL is dead. Not to mention the problem of decontamination each night, etc... no, the best was to close everything, that’s what they're doing, and the statement below was posted by Shanghai Disney Resort:

“In response to the prevention and control of the disease outbreak and in order to ensure the health and safety of our guests and Cast, Shanghai Disney Resort is temporarily closing Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown including Walt Disney Grand Theatre and Wishing Star Park, starting January 25, 2020. We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and be in close contact with the local government, and we will announce the reopening date upon confirmation.

Shanghai Disney Resort will assist in the refund for guests who have purchased tickets for admission to Shanghai Disneyland, have booked a resort hotel, or have booked tickets for Beauty and the Beast Mandarin Production through the original ticket purchase channel, and we will introduce the detailed procedure and guidelines via the resort’s official platforms as soon as possible.

We wish our guests a healthy and happy Spring Festival!”

BREAKING: Shanghai Disneyland to Get Marvel Land Expansion! ( and WHERE Will They Build It )

Shanghai Disneyland will get a new expansion with a big Marvel Land! I'm not the one saying it, Bob Iger did. To be perfectly honest, although Bob Iger did not announced it specifically during Disney’s quarterly earnings call but said this:
"Marvel has gotten extremely popular in China, and I think [Avengers: Endgame] has already done somewhere in the neighborhood of $600 million at the box office in China. So the idea of bringing the Marvel television shows to China as part of a direct-to-consumer platform ... is something that we're very, very interested in. As it relates specifically to [our park in] Shanghai, we think we have a huge opportunity for Marvel there. That's a hint to our parks and resorts group." And Iger added that WDI imagineers "...should be hard at work already designing and developing some Marvel presence in Shanghaî”. Last but not least, as the conference call was ending he added: “…in China, we don’t have any restrictions. So I imagine we’re, at some point, going to get very ambitious about what we do with Marvel at Shanghai Disneyland.” Couldn’t be more clear, right?

Building a Marvel land at SDL is almost a no-surprise as Marvel super heroes movies are very popular and make a lot of money in China, but even if a Marvel land won't open before years in Shanghaî, the first question to answer is: where in the park will they build it? A look at the land available thanks to Google Earth quickly reveal that there is not a lot of choice, specially if Disney wants to build a big Marvel land at Shanghaî Disneyland.

There is some land available near Adventure Isle but it was rumored that they keep it for a Pandora land, probably waiting to see if the new Avatar movies will be highly successful when they will be released in China. But that land is probably not big enough and anyway the transition from Adventure Isle to a Marvel land would not be the best.

The best place would be in front or near Tomorrowland but they won't build a Marvel land in the front or on the right because they don't have enough room and they won't build it right on the left either because they did the big mistake to build Toy Story Land there. I say "big mistake" because obviously the transition from a Tomorowland to a Marvel land would be more natural than a transition from Tomorrowland then to a Toy Story land then to a Marvel land. But nowthat  a direct transition from Tomorowland to a Marvel land is not possible anymore we'll have to do with Toy Story land in between.

As you can see on the screen capture below ( click to enlarge the picture ) the best place, by far, to build a Marvel land at Shanghaî Disneyland is on the big land available in the back of the park, behind Toy Story land, Fantasyland and Treasure Cove.

A zoom in the image allows to see better the land available and the polygon i did using Google Earth tells us that this land is as big as 102.326 square meters! No need to say that they have more room than needed to build a Marvel land there, even the big one that Bob Iger seems to envision.

Yes, but, wait, wasn't it there that SDL Imagineers envisioned to build an Expedition Everest as some blueprints revealed?

That's righ,t but i was never convinced that Disney would build Expedition Everest at Shanghaî Disneyland. Why? because of sensitive political reasons. When you say "Everest" it also means "Tibet" ( Mount Everest has one side in Tibet ) and although the Chinese are saying that Tibet is a province of China since centuries the question is much more complicated than the official statement so building an Expedition Everest at SDL might be a bit risky. I know we're talking only about an attraction, but the question of symbolism in China is important, so...

Anyway, this Expedition Everest was supposed to be build behind Treasure Cove and if - and that's a big "IF" Disney decide to build it anyway, they might have enough room to build both a big Marvel land and Expedition Everest. Although i don't put my bets on Everest, i put them on a Marvel Land , specifically using the left part of the land as shown in the above polygon, and time will say if i was right or not!

BREAKING: Shanghai Disney Resort Announces a “Zootopia”-Themed Land Coming to Shanghai Disneyland !

Today, Shanghai Disney Resort announced that a “Zootopia”-themed land is coming to Shanghai Disneyland - artwork above - marking the second major expansion since the resort opened in 2016. Based on the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ hit animated movie, this exciting development will be the park’s eighth themed land and the first-ever “Zootopia”-themed land at any Disney park.

Zootopia will be unique to Shanghai Disneyland and will feature a new, major attraction that seamlessly blends Disney’s storytelling and state-of-the-art technologies in order to bring this fan-favorite movie and its characters to life. Guests will be invited to experience the mammalian metropolis of Zootopia “where anyone can be anything,” with a new major attraction that will seamlessly blend Disney storytelling and state-of-the-art technology to bring this fan-favorite movie and its characters to life – including Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. Entertainment, merchandise, and food and beverage offerings will invite guests to fully immerse themselves in the Academy-Award-winning animated movie.

There’s plenty of reasons to be wildly excited for this expansion: When it opens, Zootopia will become the eighth themed land at the world’s newest Disney park and the first-ever Zootopia-themed land at any Disney park worldwide! Park guests will be able to enter the world of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde for the very first time and discover what it is like to visit the place where animals can be anything they want.

“We are thrilled to announce that Shanghai Disneyland will be home to the world’s first Zootopia-themed land,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products, The Walt Disney Company. “The rapid rate of expansion at Shanghai Disney Resort demonstrates our confidence and commitment to the Company’s future development in China.”

The development of the world’s first “Zootopia”-themed land follows the huge success of the “Zootopia” animated movie globally, particularly in China where it broke box office records to become the country’s No. 1 animated feature film in history. Of course, no matter where you travel, you’re sure to find a fan or two—Judy and Nick can currently be found greeting guests at Disney parks worldwide, and will soon be joined by other Zootopia friends at their very own land at Shanghai Disney Resort.

“Since the resort’s Grand Opening in 2016, Shanghai Disneyland has gone from strength to strength – continuing to expand and enjoying ever-rising attendance rates while also providing a safe and enjoyable experience for our guests,” said Yang Jinsong, Chairman of Disney’s Chinese joint venture partner for Shanghai Disney Resort – Shanghai Shendi Group. “Shanghai Disneyland has rapidly become one of the fastest growing Disney parks and has been key to the development of the Shanghai International Resort as one of the most visited leisure destinations in the country. This new expansion will provide our guests with an even richer selection of offerings, and will further boost our market competitiveness.”

Construction on Zootopia is targeted to begin later this year, no land opening date has been announced yet, neither what kind of attraction will be built. And if you wonder why this SDL new land was announced today, coming apparently out from nowhere in the middle of January, there is a reason for that and it's because the long holiday for the Chinese New Year is starting in China and all over Asia. The biggest human migration on the planet is now officially underway with close to 3 billion trips expected to be made between January 21 and March 1! By announcing this major news for Shanghai Disneyland now, and even if the Zootopia land is not built yet, Disney bring back SDL in the top news and remind SDL to the hundred of millions of Chinese moving now for this major holiday. Learn more about this on CNN HERE.

Stay tuned on Disney and more for more infos about the Zootopia land when available!

D&M Report: Shanghai Disneyland Adventure Isle Camp Discovery Challenge Trails

Today's D&M update is a special article about Shanghai Disneyland Adventure Isle Camp Discovery Challenge Trails with great pictures that i've shot during my visit of Shanghaî Disneyland - make sure to click on each to see them in big size. Camp Discovery Challenge Trails is a unique attraction in Disney theme parks, not only because it exists only at Shanghai Disneyland but also  because it defy the usual Disney logic which is generally to don't build anything which can be dangerous.

As a matter of fact if you do Challenge Trails, which i highly recommend, you'll survive to it because they took plenty of safety measures to avoid an accident and you have to wear a harness, itself linked to a rail above you but some sections of the trails can be incredibly difficult and of course, for the pleasure, a bit scary and adventurous.

There is at least three different trails - you have a map at the entrance - one go around a Mayan area and inside and around a temple and the others go either inside caves or waterfalls.

n

The suspended bridges are the easy part but others parts you have to go through are a very different story...

Here is the inside of the temple that you walk through in one of the trails.

Outside there is also a playground area for younger kids.

Back to the challenge trails...

Another temple in a cave - yes you need to walk on the dead tree above...

...and also through caves. Note that for each section you have to go through there is two or three level of difficulty, allowing to choose the easy one of the difficult one.

One of the most difficult part is the one with the "hidden waterfall" - called like this because you can't see it if you don't do the trail - and this one is really insane. If you're twenty and thin it'll be okay, if not you'll keep asking yourself how you're gonna do to reach the other side without slipping on the wet stones which are not more than 20cm/8" large, and with no way to hold yourself on the walls. And of course you have the hidden waterfall in the center which splash water all around... The scary part is that if you slip you would fall down 15 meters. You won't fall because you have your harness attached to the rail above, but that is of course if everything goes as planned, with no technical issue,  The trick, if you're tall enough, is to hold yourself to the track over you, the one to which you're attached all along by safety.

Camp Discovery look great also at night, as you'll see on the pictures below.

Here is the famous map of Camp Discovery Challenge Trails that i was talkin' about.

For security reasons you're not allowed to keep a camera with you when you do Camp Discovery Challenge Trails but apparently the Go Pro cameras placed on the head are authorized. I've found some great videos for you which will show you at least two of different trails.

The first video, filmed on a sunny day is a short video filmed in fact not during the trails but from the path which goes all around, allowing those who don't want to - or can't - do the trails to see what's happening.

The next video shows the Hidden Waterfall trail and is quite well filmed, so don't miss it.

The next video shows the Echo Cavern trail, the one going through the caves, also well filmed, "just like if you were there".

This last video showing the hidden waterfall trail was filmed with the wide angle of a Go Pro camera, allowing to see the Challenge Trails with a larger angle.

Camp Discovery Challenge Trails is definitely not to be missed if you visit Shanghaî Disneyland, you'll love it instantly!

While we are at Adventure Isle i thought you'll be pleased to see a video of the Roaring Rapids raft ride, one of Shanghaî Disneyland attractions with the longest wait time! Don't miss the giant Audio-Animatronic monster!

Rex and Trixie Arrive at Shanghai Disneyland Toy Story Land!

Rex and Trixie Arrive at Shanghai Disneyland and are now installed in Toy Story Land opening April 26!

Shanghai, January 11, 2018 – The Rex’s Racer attraction, currently under construction in Shanghai Disneyland’s Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land, celebrated a major milestone this week with the installation of Rex and Trixie, the two beloved dinosaur toys from the popular Disney-Pixar animated film series, Toy Story.

Rex and Trixie were installed at Rex’s Racer at Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land in Shanghai Disneyland. Rex’s Racer is one of the three major attractions coming to Disney•Pixar Toy Story Land, which is the first post-opening project of Shanghai Disney Resort and will become the theme park’s seventh themed land.

Guests visiting Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land will feel as if they’ve been shrunk down to the size of their favorite Toy Story toys for laughter and fun with family and friends in the backyard of Andy, the boy from the hit films. Woody, Buzz and their Toy Story friends will come to life and play in this fully immersive land. After opening, Rex, Andy’s insecure Tyrannosaurus toy, will invite guests to climb into RC Racer for a thrilling ride on the U-shaped track with help from his Triceratops friend, Trixie. With Rex at the controls, RC Racer, with guests aboard, zips forward and backward at ever increasing heights and exhilarating speed.

With Rex at the controls, RC Racer zips forward and backward at ever increasing heights and exhilarating speed. The other two attractions, Slinky Dog Spin and Woody’s Round-Up, will allow guests to take a seat inside Slinky Dog’s springy spirals and race around a wavy roundabout, or climb aboard the carts pulled by a herd of ponies rounded up by Sheriff Woody. As the ponies start a little square dance, they will swing their carts to and fro in time to the lively music.

The new themed land will also feature a uniquely themed character greeting area, Meeting Post, and immersive shopping and dining experiences, Al’s Toy Barn and Toy Box Café. Disney-Pixar Toy Story Land is set to open on April 26, 2018.
