Aerial Views of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan Opening This Summer

A great aerial view of the Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan has been posted on Instagram by imaiko02. The upper level on this picture above is the one you've seen in the recent released video. The Super Mario ride show building is on the bottom left, out of the frame.

More pictures of Super Nintendo World Japan below. On the first picture the land is on the lower right, between the Harry Potter land and the Waterworld stunt show arena. The new land and attractions is scheduled to open in a few months and a similar one will open at Universal Studios Hollywood next year.

Nintendo also released recently the music video below to promote the upcoming land, in which you'll see just for a few seconds the mario Kart ride.

Universal Studios Japan teases 'Super Nintendo World' with a music video !

Universal Studios Japan teases 'Super Nintendo World' with a music video! The new land will open before Tokyo Olympic games this Summer. Super Nintendo World theme park is a 'life-size, living video game'and it seems that a 'Power Up Band' wearable will track visitors' progress collecting coins and fighting bosses all along their visit of the new land.

The music video is brillantly done - exactly the one that Japanese love, and although it's still all CGI and not real shots of the land not yet ready it gives a good idea of the land elements that guess will find once the land open, with the two castles, except that of course it won't be as wide as what you'll see in the video, and that the Super Mario Kart ride will be indoor and not outdoor..

Have a look at the video and screen shots below!

Universal Studios Japan : Minions “Freeze Ray Sliders” Ride Now in Test Mode - Video

At Universal Studios Japan the new Minions attraction “Freeze Ray Sliders” is now in test mode and will open soon. Interestingly, contrary to what many were thinking - including me - the attraction won't use the same kind of tech than Luigi's Rollicking Roadster at DCA Cars Land but the more simple one of Mater's Junkyard Jamboree or the new Alien Swirling Saucers at DHS Toy Story Land.

Check the video below showing the attraction in test mode but not yet with the canon projecting snow that you can see on the above rendering.

Universal Studios Japan Counter-Attack and Reveal Concept Arts of USJ New Nighttime Parade to Debut May 17 !

We've seen earlier today the new "Dreaming Up" parade which just debut at Tokyo Disneyland for its 35th Anniversary, - see article below - and with a perfect sense of timing Universal Studios Japan counter-attack and just revealed new concept arts for USJ "Universal Spectacle Night Parade – Best of Hollywood" which will debut May 17! The parade war is on in Japan!

The parade will pay tribute to four different movies, with sections for “Harry Potter,” “Jurassic World,” “Minions,” and “Transformers” for which it will be the first appearance at Universal Studios Japan, as the Transformers attraction isn't built yet there. Although there will be floats and entertainers for each movie, it will be a very different kind of parade than the Disney one as, first, it's a nighttime parade and, two, it will use projection mapping to immerse guests in the different movie worlds.

Below, the trailer also released by fUniversal Studios Japan for the new parade.

First Concept-Arts for Universal Studios Japan Super Nintendo World Attractions !

We have to wait until 2020 for the grand opening at Universal Studios Japan of the awaited Super Nintendo World which will give Nintendo die-hards a live-action taste of the places inhabited by Mario, Link, Zelda, Kirby and more… but fans got their first glimpse of what Super Nintendo World might look like, courtesy of several concept art images released on Twitter with permission by Gary Snyder, an adviser on Western media and culture.

So, let's have a look at these would we, as the same attractions will most probably be part of Super Nintendo World when it will come after the opening in Japan to Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando.

Let's start by the Nintendo "king", Super Mario, with the rendering below showing the Mario Kart ride, as well as two others renderings, including one showing the whole inside of the ride! Some say that the guests will wear during the ride augmented reality glasses, but so far nothing has been confirmed, so take this for now as a rumor.

The next rendering shows the Donkey Kong ride, the coaster and a playground.

Super Nintendo World will include two castles related to famous Nintendo games, and here is two digital renderings for these.

A last rendering seems to be related to a theatre attraction with a female character, i'm not a specialist about Nintendo games to be honest but it seems to be Zelda?

Finally, last week a map of Super Nintendo World was leaked but keep in mind that there might be some changes since it was done if it is an early concept map, and in fact this is the map for the Orlando version of Super Nintendo World, and by what we can see on it Super Nintendo World will be constructed between Simpsons land and E.T. Adventure, taking over most of Woody Woodpecker’s Kid’s Zone including Curious George Play Area, Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster, Fievel’s Playland, Animal Actors Studio and the A Day in the Park with Barney show.

We'll probably learn more about the rides soon and D&M will let you know. In the meantime, i repost below the Super Nintendo World "trailer" released for the groundbreaking event.

Nintendo of America Release First Concept-Art of Super Nintendo World to Open AT Universal Studios Japan and Later at Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando !

Nintendo of America revealed today  the first concept-art for the Nintendo Land and the Mario-themed attraction!

Visitors to Universal Studios Japan will soon be able to immerse themselves in the world of Super Mario Bros. and other Nintendo franchises at Super Nintendo World which will feature “attractions based on many Nintendo titles” according to Nintendo. Nintendo’s theme park strategy will begin with Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan, in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the companies announced today and Universal Studios also have plans to bring the Nintendo land with Mario and friends to Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando as announced a couple of weeks ago by Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts.

Nintendo’s artwork for Universal Studios Japan leans heavily on Mario and Luigi, with versions of Princess Peach and Bowser’s castles and what appear to be theme park character versions of Peach and Toad.

Super Nintendo World will be comprised of expansive and multilevel environments filled with unprecedented, state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, shops and restaurants — all featuring Nintendo’s most popular characters and games.

Development cost at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Japan, is currently expected to exceed 50 billion yen, or $433 million. It's Official! Universal Studios Japan Reveal the "Greatest Dinosaur Ride in the World" !

It's official! Universal Studios Japan revealed today the name of the major E-Ticket ride which will open next year for USJ 15th Anniversary. Announced a few months ago as "the greatest dinosaur ride in the world" the new ride will be a "flying coaster" in the Jurassic Park land and is titled "The Flying Dinosaur". Universal announces it as the highest flying coaster in the world. As you can see on the picture above guests will be suspended under a Pteranodon and here is the synopsis / storyline of the ride:

"Since its opening in 2001, Jurassic Park has been popular to all guests around the world. Actually within the site, they avoided human management in the area where wild Pteranodon were living to keep it secret.
"Jurassic Park" development team, to make true the dream of an attraction where you'll fly with them, have been through many years of research. Finally, they disciplined the wild Pteranodon and succeeded in having him fly in a stable state. However, it is said that even well-trained, they are wild dinosaur so during the flight, be careful because it is said that sometime you can suddenly lose control..."

No need to say that this is a major announcement and this Jurassic Park flying coaster will be amazing, i'm curious to see what scenes / species will await guests who will fly around the land next year... and to see if this new Universal ride will be "imported" in Universal Studios parks in the U.S!

Comcast Buy 51% Stake in Universal Studios Japan !

It don't look like but it might be a bigger news than it seems, as Comcast - Universal Studios owner -  will buy 51% of the company ruling Universal Studios Japan for an amount of 1.5 Billion dollars. Just like Disney with TDR, Universal Studios Japan was not own by Universal Studios U.S, it was a license and with 51% of the shares Comcast will now own USJ. More about this from a Japan Times article:

"U.S. media giant and cable operator Comcast Corp. confirmed Monday it will buy a 51 percent stake in USJ Co., operator of the Universal Studios Japan theme park in Osaka, for about $1.5 billion (¥180.42 billion).

It is Comcast’s biggest overseas investment, as the largest U.S. cable operator seeks international growth after being stymied in its bid to acquire its second-largest competitor Time Warner Cable Inc.

Under an agreement reached with USJ shareholder Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Comcast will purchase the shares via its unit NBCUniversal, which operates Universal Studios theme parks in Hollywood and Orlando, Florida.

“We see Comcast and NBCUniversal becoming more of a global company,” Brian Roberts, Comcast’s chief executive officer, told reporters in Osaka on Monday. “This is the beginning of us making more global investments,” he said, adding the USJ deal will be Comcast’s biggest investment outside the U.S.

Philadelphia-based Comcast, which in April dropped its bid to buy Time Warner Cable Inc. amid opposition from antitrust regulators, has been seeking growth elsewhere, including from digital media in the U.S.

USJ Chief Executive Officer Glenn Gumpel said at the Osaka news conference that the company will drop its plan to relist shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange for now. He also expressed his intention to resign at the end of November.

USJ has kept some distance from Universal Studios Hollywood, and some attractions have features that are unique to Japanese anime and games.

The planned acquisition will likely bring into focus how and whether it will have any impact on the ongoing talks between USJ and Okinawa to build a new theme park in the island prefecture, industry observers said.

Universal Studios Japan opened in 2001 to become a major tourist draw in the Kansai region. Although it had been suffering from a drop in visitors, the theme park drew a record 12.7 million visitors in fiscal 2014 after adding the popular Harry Potter zone.

USJ was delisted in 2009 from the bourse’s Mothers market for startups due to the lackluster performance of its shares. Goldman Sachs’ investment fund acquired USJ."

Now, what effect this could have in the future? Richard Bilbao from Orlando Business Journal has some thoughts about it and explain the few reasons why the Japan theme park buyout may help Orlando:

New ride ideas: Now there's wasn't anything keeping the parks from cross-pollinating since a Harry Potter attraction opened at Universal Studios Japan last year. But having the parks under one umbrella will further promote the parks to share best practices and technology that could land Orlando's parks some new ride ideas. Universal Orlando seems to be the pioneer in new attractions, but it doesn't mean the other parks don't have anything to offer.

Unifies leadership: Comcast Corp. is cutting out the middleman on making sure the theme parks are all on the same page. This acquisition streamlines the final decisions being made for a majority of the parks and should play well on improving visitation and expansion at the parks.

More money, more expansions: Comcast's executives have had nothing but praise to say about Universal Orlando Resort. The theme park has been growing in attendance aggressively, and they know it will take spending more to keep that momentum. The success of the Japan park should help keep the wallets of Comcast's decision makers fat and ready to spend each year.

Universal Studios Japan Space Fantasy Ride, Winner of 2012 THEA Award for "Outstanding Achievement Attraction"

As i told you last week the 2014 winner of the prestigious THEA Award for "Outstanding Achievement Attraction" is Universal Studios Diagon Alley's Escape from Gringotts", an award that it fully deserves. And in 2013 the winner was HKDL Mystic Manor, which was also fully deserved. But who won the award in 2012? It was Universal studios Japan Space Fantasy a roller coaster ride which might loos a lot like Space Mountain - guests are sent across the universe and travel through galaxies but with such technical improvements that it is a kind of Space Mountain "on steroids".

I did an article about it four years ago but i found recently an excellent video filmed by Theme Park Review that you really must see, and that's why i'm coming back talking about this ride that most of you, not living in japan, may not know well. Below, what i was saying in my previous article to introduce the ride, but first the full ride POV video.

Space Fantasy is not a simple roller-coaster as it is a "spinning" roller coaster! Designed if i'm right by MACK each part of the train - in which guests sit back to back - is spinning during the ride, but not during all the ride. Described by Universal Studios as "a new ride to experience the Universe" guests are "departing from the Earth with the mission to save the Sun". According to the press release aboard the "solar shuttles" "You will have a close-up view of the stars and exploring through the asteroids, and experiencing the changing speed which varies along with the story. At the climax of the ride, you will encounter and go into the Sun!" So, it's a space themed roller coaster and just like at DL Space Moutain the ride is full of galaxy projection effects or even huge meteorites like at DLP.

Screamscape who was the first to talk about it some months ago had a better description of the ride: “Once the guests departs from Earth, they will see the big beautiful planet Earth in all its glory, and once slowly moving further away from Earth into deep space, passes by Nebulas, and a Milky way like Star field that looks like a Water Fall, called, the Star Fall. Once they pass thru the Star Fall, they will go around the ring of Saturn, and through the shooting star showers, and other small planets, until nearing the Mercury, pass by Mercury, the guests close in to the SUN.”

There is also some characters that guests discover during the queue-pre-show of the ride - including a talking communications satellite named “G-Bot”, and a Solar Princess born in a supernova called Kosumia: “Kosumia knowing that the sun is losing energy, was holding a crisis. To save the sun, (she) realize that he (the sun) needed the human energy we have, that puts toward the sun appeal to guests.” So, on a certain point of view it's a Space Mountain with a Japanese story-line, but that's not the problem.

The other technical innovation - which is also great - happen during the ride (and also during the queue) and is interactive. Designed by GestureTek this revolutionary 3D camera tracking and multi-touch systems takes visitors into the future of entertainment as "the ride is equipped with 3D cameras and projection systems. This lets visitors control the content on the screens around them by simple hand gestures, enabling them to collect “Stardust Clouds” from the LED displays in a 98-foot, in-ride tunnel"!

More about this amazing in-ride innovation from GestureTek press release: "Using 3D cameras that scan the surrounding environment and detect movement, GestureTek created an innovative and exciting way for guests to interact in free space with dynamic multi-media imagery in the pre-ride area. On the actual ride, GestureTek's touch-free multi-touch interface adds a collaborative element to the rider experience, so that guests can interact together with on-screen elements while working towards a common goal."

In the Pre-ride area "Space Entities Engage with Passers-By, Reacting to Users' Movements and Gestures. Visitors line up next to 85 feet of motion-driven 'Harmony Walls' designed to provide a unique and engaging interactive experience. Using an array of 22 integrated 3D depth cameras, 13 projection systems, a custom-designed tracker and 16 rack-mounted quad-core computers, GestureTek created an intelligent, vision-equipped environment where the heads of up to 66 guests and 132 hands can be tracked. The system's tracking capabilities track an entire audience and their specific gestures, providing visitors with the ultimate interactive experience."

"GestureTek managed the creation of fun custom content featuring animated intergalactic ‘sun fairies’ that tumble, fly, lead visitors and scatter in reaction to visitors' movements and gestures. "Our 3D tracking system can be configured to respond to a broad range of one-handed or two-handed gestures, including swipes, circular motions, pokes, waves and more," said Francis MacDougall, GestureTek's Chief Technology Offer. "The Space Fantasy attraction primarily utilizes intuitive pointing gestures, to guarantee easy and immediate user interaction, with no learning curve."

During the ride: "Riders Collect ‘Star Dust’ To Save the Sun". As part of the ride, GestureTek's multi-touch software and custom-designed camera array powers an interactive experience where, for the first time ever, riders can control content on the screens around them, simply by gesturing with their arms. The premise of the Space Fantasy ride is the impending death of the sun. As guests travel by cart up a 98 foot in-ride climbing tunnel lined with Barco LED display tiles, they can collect energy from the ‘Stardust Clouds’, that will be used to re-energize the sun."

"The tunnel ride is the first ‘in-ride’ device-free interaction that we have seen," said MacDougall. "GestureTek is one of a very few organizations possessing the in-depth knowledge of cameras, infrared and multi-touch required to isolate multiple hand movements while ride cars are in motion."

Let's end with two more videos which were included in the previous article.

Tokyo Disney Resort Counter Attack Universal Studios Japan in 2015 With a Series of Shows, Events...

Tokyo Disney Resort announced today that the total combined attendance at Tokyo Disneyland Park and Tokyo DisneySea Park during the first half of this fiscal year (April 1 to September 30, 2014) amounted to a figure of 15,099,000 persons (a decrease of 260,000 persons or 98.3% of the attendance figure for the same period last year). Although this is the second highest figure ever recorded for the first half of a fiscal year, they probably didn't liked the "decrease" so, in 2015 Tokyo Disneyland will counter attack to Universal Studios Japan spike in attendance - due to the opening of Harry Potter Wizarding World at USJ - with a series of new events, shows, and one ( small ) attraction.

So far, TDL didn't  provided a lot of information about these new events, but it seems that some of them might bring a little more traditional Japanese culture to The Happiest Place in Japan. Here is the list of the new planned events for Tokyo Disney parks in 2015:

Mermaid Lagoon Theater (4/24/15)
I've announced it to you last week, “King Triton’s Concert,” the new production at Mermaid Lagoon Theater will be themed to Disney’s The Little Mermaid. In the new show, “King Triton’s Concert,” King Triton hosts a musical concert with Ariel, Flounder, Sebastian and other familiar characters from the Disney film creating a mesmerizing world under the sea with music, songs and dynamic performance, just as in the movie. Ariel will “swim” above the audience to the beautiful music and will even “swim” down and approach guests in this lively and sensational musical show. For this show, Mermaid Lagoon Theater will be renovated with upgraded stage and lighting technology, as well as new display screens to be installed around the audience seating area.

Disney Easter (4/2 – 6/23/15)
Although Easter is more an occidental tradition than a japanese one it looks like TDR is aiming to popularize it at TDL with a new Disney Easter event that spans a way longer time than the Easter season in France or in the U.S. It all makes sense when you remember that the Japanese will take any excuse to dress up like cute critters (bunnies, in this case).

Disney Natsu Matsuri (“Summer Festival”)(7/9 – 8/31/15)
This Natsu Matsuri is probably the one which will have a distinctly Japanese spin on it. Summer is the season of festivals in Japan, so it will be interesting to see what TDL have scheduled for us here.

Disney Summer Festival (7/9 – 8/31/15)
This other one will be at Tokyo Disney Sea and will probably be more in line with the Western-flavored events and festivals usually on display at the resorts. Apparently there will be a lot of fruity new food and drink items, Latin-inspired song and dance, and a lot of chances to get wet.

Disney Tanabata Days (6/24 – 7/7/15)
Based on Japan’s Tanabata holiday which takes place on July 7, Tanabata Days will fittingly give guests a chance to fill out “wish cards” and hopefully see their wishes come true. Mickey and Minnie will also put on a daily show re-enacting the tale of literally star-crossed lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi – two deities separated by the Milky Way who are allowed to meet only once a year on, you guessed it, July 7.

Stitch Encounter (Summer ’15)
The only real new attraction for 2015, Stitch Encounter will be most probably the same interactive attraction, during which young guests will be able to talk and interact with Stitch.

Tokyo Disney Electrical Parade (From 9/7/15)
A new nightly parade with floats and Disney’s characters iand all the question is to know if TDL will have the same "Disney Paint the Night" parade that currently started at HKDL.

Disney Halloween (9/8 – 11/1/15)
You can't expect the same scares as in Universal Studios Japan’s annual Horror Nights, but we can count on TDR and its high production values to provide a great Halloween season.

Christmas Fantasy/Christmas Wish (11/9 – 12/25/15) + New Year’s (1/1 – 1/5/16)
Culminating on Christmas Day, this season is already anticipated to be the most romantic time to visit the park, since Christmas is a holiday for couples to spend together in Japan.
Following the Christmas events, an “Oshogatsu” (Japanese New Year) event will take place, with Japan-inspired decorations and costumes for major characters.

Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Fantasy (1/12 – 3/18/16)
Like all Disney parks in the world TDR is capitalizing on the success of Frozen in Japan and this will be a park-wide event with original decorations, show schedules and more – all themed on the world of Frozen.

Welcome, Little Princess (1/12 – 3/18/26)
Supposedly this attraction/event combo will let little girls realize their dreams of becoming a Disney princess. It’s too early to say if it will carry a separate cost to park entrance, or require reservations, but chances are that it'll be the case.

So, lots of seasonal events at Tokyo Disney Resorts for 2015, a bit like they do at DLP when no new ride is planned, and if except Stitch Encounter the most interesting thing will be indeed the King Triton Concert starting next April!
