LIFE Disneyland Opening Day Pictures, Now in Glorious Colors!

LIFE Magazine photographer Allan Grant was there on Disneyland opening day, July 17 1955, and shot dozens of awesome pictures which now became historical. I had posted most of them on D&M years ago but recently LIFE re-released some of Allan pics with the colors enhanced, looking better than ever and colors more accurate, so i repost these new versions that i'm sure you will enjoy!

Above, Walt aboard the Disneyland Railroad and below interviewed by Art Linkletter.

Let's move To Fantasyland where Walt is ready to deliver his Fantasyland opening speech in from of TV Cameras.

Disneyland very first day parade!

A rare picture of Walt on opening day, sit in a Main Street vehicle.

Here is a scene that you will NEVER see again in your life! A Disneyland cast-member "playing" Mickey on Main Street, apparently waiting to enter "on stage", with DL guests all around her ( as it is a girl in the Mickey costume ) as well as others characters like the Mad Hatter and Chip and Dale AND holding the Mickey head in her hands instead to have it on her head! Okay, it was bloody hot on Disneyland opening day, so we don't blame her!

We move to Frontierland with shots of the Mark Twain and Frontierland Saloon on opening day!

'Time for some refreshments for the saloon girls!

Let's move to Tomorrowland now, with its awesome TWA rocket, its Space Bar, Autopia and these simply but greatly designed flat parasols under which guests could sit and avoid sun rays.

And that's it! A last picture of Walt shot during the same opening day,  which no doubt was for Walt the day of HIS LIFE!

Amazing LIFE Magazine Pictures of Disneyland on Opening Day ! - Part Four : Adventureland jungle Cruise

Here is the last article with the amazing pictures of Disneyland at opening day shot by LIFE photographers. This time we will have a look at Adventureland and more precisely the Jungle Cruise attraction as it looked on opening day thanks to pictures shot by LIFE photographer Loomis Dean. As usual, click on each picture to see them in big size. If you've missed the part one with pictures of Main Street and Fantasyland on opening day you'll find it HERE ,  the part two with the Tomorrowland pics is HERE, and the part three with the Frontierland at opening day pictures is HERE.

As you've seen in the previous articles, it's incredible how the land was dry at that time - after all it was just an orange grove before! So, these LIFE pictures of one of Disneyland most beloved attractions are precious, not only because they show the ride as it looked at the start but also because we can see how the park has changed from an almost dry environment to a tropical one with a lush vegetation of exotic trees, plants and flowers thanks to the talent - and even genius - of WED Horticulturist Bill Evans.

Going through Schweitzer falls...

In our days, everyone except young children coming to Disneyland for the first time knows that the Jungle Cruise animals are not real but Audio-Animatronics, but back on opening day the mechanical Jungle Cruise crocodiles or hippos were something new for Disneyland guests. And if i can judge by the picture below the illusion was impressing enough to put the doubt in visitor's minds...

I hope you all enjoyed these four articles, and it's with this photo of a Jungle Cruise hippo that we will end this fantastic LIFE pictorial report of Disneyland at opening day... Although i have one more with you, not shot on opening day but rare pictures indeed that will be posted next week after the covering this week-end of the D23 Expo as Disney and more will cover the most awaited event by Disney fans all around the world!

Amazing LIFE Magazine Pictures of Disneyland on Opening Day ! - Part Three : Frontierland

Here we go for the part three article with these amazing pictures of Disneyland at opening day shot by LIFE photographers. This time we will have a closer look at Frontierland as it looked on opening day thanks to pictures shot by LIFE photographer Loomis Dean. As usual, click on each picture to see them in big size. If you've missed the part one with pictures of Main Street and Fantasyland on opening day you'll find it HERE and the part two with the Tomorrowland pics is HERE.

The first interesting thing that we can see on these pictures is of course how the vegetation is different now than it was on opening day. It's not a surprise, sure, but it also gives you an idea of the tremendous work that has been done by Disneyland horticulturists since Disneyland opening day!

Below, a picture of opening day guests waiting for the arrival of the Mark Twain at the "Disneyland Steamship" pier.

And there goes the Mark Twain for one of its first journeys along Frontierland river!

As the vegetation was not that high on opening day, you still could see Sleeping Beauty Castle from the banks of Frontierland. Also note the Frontierland Stagecoach passing by  in the background.

Let's move to the Golden Horseshoe Saloon as the beloved Golden Horseshoe Revue was there from opening day - and as you will see on the show curtain its sponsor Pepsi Cola, too!

Up on the terrace on the first floor the girls from the Golden Horseshoe Revue could relax and have a beer - something unthinkable today.

Even more unthinkable: having their young children drinking beer, too!... or may they were drinking root beer or Pepsi Cola! Note: the LIFE picture was reversed - probably the negative was backwards when they did the print - so i fixed it.

And now we move to another part of Frontierland for very rare pictures - always shot by Loomis Dean - of the now long time extinct and almost forgotten  Rainbow Ridge Pack Mules and Conestoga Wagon rides!

Not only the Conestoga Wagon was crossing a little river but at that time the Indians were not Audio-Animatronics, they were real human beings! Not sure all of them were real Indians, though...

Uh-Ho, it seems that we have a little problem of 20th century intrusion in a supposed 19th century environment!

I'm adding to this article two more LIFE pictures shot by photographer Ralph Crane, but these were not shot on opening day as it shows the Mine Train through Nature's Wonderland which was introduced in1960!

See you tomorrow for the final part with amazing pictures showing Adventureland Jungle Cruise on opening day! Don't miss it! If you've missed the part one with pictures of Main Street and Fantasyland on opening day you'll find it HERE and the part two with the Tomorrowland pics is HERE.
