Port Aventura " Angkor, Adventure in the Lost Kingdom " Now Open !

Although you still have to wait a few months before Disneyland Paris WDS Ratatouille ride will open , Spain Port Aventura already opened its new attraction: Angkor, Adventure in the Lost Kingdom and i have videos for you of the full ride as well as opening celebrations.

Although the Angkor decor looks good to me i have to say that i'm a bit disappointed by the theming. The big mistake for me is the lack of vegetation theming. And it's strange that they did this mistake because they have the room to add exotic vegetation, even if it would have been simply bamboos and it was not that difficult or expensive to do. Instead we have a slow interactive raft ride which is as far as the Jungle Cruise as it can be and much more a "splash battle" between riders and guests outside.

Located in the "Asia" part of Port Aventura i don't like also the fact that it's so close to the roller coasters that the feeling to be immersed in a  far away world is impossible, so there is a real problem of visual intrusion, here. But young guests, teens, and anyone who like to get wet will have fun with this ride who should be popular with Port Aventura guests. Below,  the videos and let me know what you think in the comments!

A short video of the ride filmed probably ( because of the water splash ) with a Go Pro camera.

A longer video showing the making-of, the opening celebration and on-ride video with famous VIPs.

Some official artwork and making-of pictures. As you can see from the videos the ride don't really have the kind of Jungle Cruise lush vegetation that you can see on the renderings below!

Spain Port Aventura to Open a €100M Ferrari Theme Park in 2016

Port Aventura announced they will open in 2016 a €100 million Ferrari theme park, close to the existing Port Aventura park. And it will include too a new premium hotel with 250 rooms! Below, high-res concept-arts and the full press release. This should be a great addition to the already excellent Port Aventura!

PortAventura Entertainment S.A.U. (“PortAventura”) has reached a licensing agreement with Ferrari S.p.A. (“Ferrari”) to establish “Ferrari Land”, a new theme park dedicated to the global brand of Ferrari within the PortAventura destination resort near Barcelona, Spain.
The new branded site (expected to open during 2016) will be the sole Ferrari theme park in Europe and will envisage a total investment of more than €100 million.

Ferrari Land will be built on a total surface area of 75,000 square meters and benefit from several rides (including the highest and fastest vertical accelerator in Europe)...

... a new premium hotel with 250 rooms and 5 star service, restaurants, shops and large simulation areas for car racing.

This new partnership with Ferrari, the world's most powerful brand for the second consecutive year (according to the annual Global 500 report, February 2014), and PortAventura (Europe’s second largest destination resort and the largest in the Mediterranean) will allow the resort to further improve its position as a leading European destination resort. At present, PortAventura receives nearly 4 million visits annually, of which nearly 50% are from outside Spain.

Andrea Perrone, Managing Director of Ferrari Brand, the subsidiary responsible for managing all activities regarding the use of the Ferrari brand said “After the successful experience of the Abu Dhabi Ferrari World we have received numerous requests to launch new Ferrari theme parks. After a thorough selection process, we have selected Investindustrial’s solid project backed by skilled and experienced people and the opportunity to bring the Ferrari allure in Spain where there are a lot of supporters and fans including a lot of tourists attracted also by the PortAventura destination resort. “Ferrari Land” will further strengthen the Ferrari brand in the region. “Ferrari Land” will appeal to entire families as well as Formula One supporters. We will continue to further look at the launch of additional Ferrari theme parks outside of Europe with no rush, while continuing to maximise the value of our prestigious brand without diluting it.”

Sergio Feder, PortAventura Executive Chairman: “Since entry we implemented a long term plan supported by well-known international brands to increase visitors to approximately 5 million yearly and to transform PortAventura into the best destination resort in Europe. Ferrari is an obvious choice not only for the values the brand represents, but also for their experience in the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi theme park. For us, it is also an honour to collaborate with such a worldwide recognized brand”.

Port Aventura Announces Angkor : Lost Kingdom Adventure , Interactive Raft Ride Opening April 11 !

The longest ride in Europe, looking like an interactive Jungle Cruise with tigers, snakes, lost temples, and opening in less than three months from now? That's the great news of the day, coming from the excellent Port Aventura theme park in Spain and D&M has all details and artworks about this new ride called "Angkor : Lost Kingdom Adventure"!

Angkor : Lost Kingdom Adventure will be of course inspired by the famous ancient city of Angkor Wat, built between the ninth and fifteenth centuries and located in the jungles of Cambodia, near Siem Reap. I, personally, had the luck to have been many times at the real Angkor Wat, a real not-to-missed- wonder if you travel in South-East Asia. The jungle is so stick with the temples - see my own pictures below of the real Angkor site - that Angkor is one of the few places in the world where i thought that even with a $500M budget WDI Imagineers would never been able to reproduce it!

Angkor Wat is also one of the largest religious structure in the world is considered and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1992.

Back to this new Port Aventura attraction now, and the ride will focus on enjoyment for the whole family and all ages, ideal for those who want to have a fun time and soaking. MACK is the ride manufacturer and the attraction will be an "interactive boat ride" also known as "Splash Battle" in which visitors will embark on a raft equipped with water guns to shoot several interactive targets during the ride such as snakes emerging from the water, tigers, monkeys, stone elephants, and more. Guests will also be able during the ride to shoot at other boats and park visitors who will watch from outside the attraction.

"Angkor : Lost Kingdom Adventure" occupy an area of 10,500 square meters, enough to create its own mini-land within the China land itself. The attraction will be more than 300 meters long and the ride will last 10 minutes which will make it the longest ride (in time) in Europe, with a maximum capacity of 726 people per hour spread over a total of 14 boats up to 8 people per boat. The estimated cost of the attraction is 10 million euros.

Now, even with a 300 meters length, if the ride last 10 minutes it obviously will not be a fast raft ride and, considering that riders apparently might not be sit according to the attraction poster on the top,  "Angkor: Lost Kingdom Adventure" seems to be a slow interactive raft family ride, which sounds fine to me.

And the good news is that "Angkor: Lost Kingdom Adventure" is scheduled to open with the start of the season on April 11, in two and a half months, just one day before DLP 22nd Anniversary! Port Aventura strategy is to open a new ride each year, a very good strategy indeed! - and a new one will come next year, in 2015, for Port Aventura 20th Anniversary!

Edited: One last interesting point as i've just been told that the renderings above were done for the most by illustrator/ concept artist Claudio Mazzoli, a former Disney/Landmark artist.

Below, three new promotional visuals for the ride.

They also released a short teaser - not showing a lot - that is embedded below.

Spain Port Aventura Announces Partnership with Cirque du Soleil !

That's a pretty good move for Spain theme park Port Aventura as the park announced that next summer world famous Cirque du Soleil will come at Port Aventura during summer season during with "Kooza", "a stunt show with a large dose of fantasy".
"Both parties have signed a partnership agreement and the Cirque du Soleil will be installed in the resort with a daily show for more than 2,400 spectators.
Kooza, a show which has been seen by more than 4 million viewers from different countries discusses the work of Innocent, a loner character who tries to find a place in the world. The Cirque du Soleil believes the show is a return to the origins of the company because it combines two circus traditions: the art of clowning and acrobatic performances.

Throughout his life journey Innocent will contact comic characters like a king, an obnoxious tourist and a pickpocket. Kooza explores through exotic visuals world issues such as fear, identity, recognition, boldness and power .
"It will be a synergy that will allow us to entertain and amuse the millions of visitors of the park and also reach our fans," said Finn Taylor, senior vice president of Cirque du Soleil. "This collaboration is definitely a step forward in the consolidation of PortAventura resort as a leader in Europe and one of the most valuable tourism industry family brands," concludes Sergio Feder, chairman of the executive committee of the Park attractions of the Costa Dorada."

Now, you may ask: "By the way, why don't they have a permanent Cirque du Soleil show at Disneyland Paris, like WDW have at Downtown Disney? " This would be a good question, and the truth is that DLP tried to have one but - and it's a big "but" - the problem was apparently the cost. From what i've been told the deal with the Cirque du Soleil wherever they create a new show is that a special theatre must be build for the show and the cost of it must be paid by the place where the show will be, whether it's a Las Vegas casino or a theme park resort. And the cost is supposed to be around... $100 Million! You better understand now why there is no Cirque du Soleil at DLP as the park simply couldn't afford it. Instead they choose the cheap option and built a small circus tent under which they had a show for a while but nothing comparable with the quality of the Cirque du Soleil shows. What they could do probably more easily is what Port  Aventura will do next year, i.e to have a temporary show which won't require a multi million dollar theater. That would be smart and we'll see if this will happen at DLP in the future. In the meantime have a look t the trailer below, and as i've said it's a very good move from Port Aventura which, with a brand new family ride also coming in 2014, should help the park to have an excellent 2014 season.

Port Aventura, the best theme park in Spain - Part Two

In the first part of my Port Aventura article we’ve been around four of the five lands of the park : Meditterranea, Polynesia, China, and Mexico. The last land of the park is the “Far-West” , i.e their  “Frontierland” and we're going to have  closer look at it as i like it a lot.
To read the part one of this article, click HERE.

The artists who originally created Port Aventura had the good idea to don’t make a simple “copy” of Disneyland’s original Frontierland and they created a totally different “ Far West”. In fact, on a certain point of view they’ve built a town!

No river, here, no Tom Sawyer island, too, but a real town - probably even more “real” than in Disneyland 's Frontierland. I What i mean is that the original towns in the Far-West probably looked more like this town in Port Aventura than Frontierland. But, at the end, that’s not the point. The point is that you have the delicious feeling to be in the “old west”, and not to see another “copy”.

Before i go further, i have to tell you something that will probably amaze those of you who didn’t knew about it. Could you believe that Spain is full of old “Far West” towns? And even of “ghost towns”? No kidding. And specially the region of Almeria, in Andalucia, south of Spain. Why? Because the wonderful desert of the province of Almeria was looking so much like the vast lands of America’s original Far West that in the 1960’s most of the Italian western movies of Sergio Leone were filmed here. And the towns remain since then. If you go one day in this area, you’ll find lot of them which are now small “Far West” theme parks... In fact, in the sixties, a lot of movies were filmed in Spain : Doctor Zhivago from David Lean was filmed entirely near Madrid! as well as “El Cid” with Charlton Heston, or “55 days of Beijing” also with Heston and Ava Gardner, and even David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia was filmed partly near Almeria...

So, you see, Spain has a long history in movie sets, specially “Far West” towns, and it’s probably partly why this one is so well done...

So, when you exit the “Mexico” land, and enter the far west town, you enter the land by what is supposed to be the other end of the town. And what do you see first? The cemetery!...which, as we know, were built at the exit of the towns. Right after, some yards away, here is the school!  a real school, just like in the ol’ times. If you turn left, you’ll get into the main street of the town. But if you turn right, you’ll find one of my favorite attraction here , called “Stampede”. Stampede is a wooden roller coaster. Well, i should say “two” roller coasters, as the great idea here is that two trains depart together and race to arrive the first! So, sometime, the two tracks are side to side, sometime they separate, then join again, up to the arrival line. It looks pretty simple  but you don’t have any idea how much fun this “race” is! It’s even strange that Disney never thought about it! Don’t miss this one if you’re there one day!

So, now, let’s enter the main street. You’ll find here all what you could find in these kind of streets, restaurants, shops, all perfectly well themed. In one of the building , there is even a medium, which will tell you everything about your future - quite good medium, by the way, as well as a very nice girl!

And, yes! there is a train station! “ Penitence station”  as it is called, where you can embark in the train which goes all around the park...

Not so far, you’ll find a really good “wild wild west stunt show “ The show decor, stunts and explosions are as good as the one you can find in the states.

And when you’ll exit the show, just go to the saloon at the corner of the street. Folks, this one is a real saloon, a great one, really, with a show, a good show, and lovely girls, everything is perfectly themed - including the girls!

Not that far from the saloon, here is the hotel of the town. You won’t sleep in it, but you can dine here , in the restaurant.

When you approach the other end of the town, you’ll find a lot of attractions : a mine train
- like “big thunder”, but with no mine, and a log-flume ride housed in a huge and greatly themed wooden building, with a bridge nearby which lead to the entrance of the land.

Finally, right at the exit of the land, here is the inevitable “raft ride” called “silver river flume”, and all set in a kind of colorado canyon theming.

So, as you might have noticed, this is a quite different “frontierland” they've built here, and honestly, Port Aventura “imagineers” or whatever they call them have done a damn' good work!

Spain in the summer can be hot, really. So, when Universal bought the park some years ago, they had the good idea to create, next to Port Aventura’s entrance a “water park” called “ Costa Caribe” , where guests can refresh and have fun.

Don’t expect a “typhoon lagoon” or a “blizzard beach” here, but you’ll find some elements of good theming, like this giant plane floating over the heads in the “in door” section.

When Universal owned the park they built too two very good hotels, one with a “meditteranean” theming and one on a “mexican” theming, and both are big, and good - my favorite is the meditteranean as it is one built like a Meditterranean village.

Hope this little flight to spain was pleasant to you, and that you'll be able to visit soon Port Aventura!
