The Theme Building Encounter Restaurant - A WDI Wonder Outside Disney theme parks

The Theme Building Encounter Restaurant - A WDI wonder outside Disney theme parks

Editor's Note: Jim Korkis has posted on Mouse Planet a great interview of imagineer Eddie Sotto about "Disney's World of Tomorrow" that you can read HERE. As the article don't include pictures, i repost here one of D&M favorite article about the LAX Encounter restaurant, which was redesigned by Eddie and his team.

For most of us, Walt Disney Imagineering is a Disney company creating wonders for Disney theme parks all around the world. And, at 99% that's right. But sometime, it happens that WDI Imagineers create other wonders, and not for a Disney theme park. The Theme Building Encounter restaurant at Los Angeles airport is one of them.

The Theme Building was part of an overall $50 million " Los Angeles Jet Age Terminal " project which began in 1960, the building itself was completed in August 1961. with giant 135 foot high parabolic arches, the Theme Building was at that time the first structure in the U.S to utilize supporting steel arches of this design. And what a design, it looks like a space ship - or a flying saucer - that just lands on Earth! On December 18, 1992, the los angeles City Council designated the Theme Building a city cultural and historical monument. A Los Angeles icon with a kind of Tomorrowland architecture, may be this is why Walt Disney Imagineers agreed with enthusiasm when they were asked to redesign the Theme Building back in 1995.

And who were the WDI Imagineers who did it? Eddie Sotto - the great Imagineer who was Main Street show producer at Disneyland Paris - the best Main Street of all Magic Kingdoms - led the design team. Ellen Guevara, another WDI Imagineer also worked with Eddie on the Encounter Restaurant interior design. And the gorgeous lighting of the exterior was done by WDI lighting specialist - i should say "wizard" - Michael Valentino.

So, let's have a closer look at this Encounter Restaurant with original Eddie Sotto sketches, model pictures and photos of the real thing. Here is a photo of Eddie Sotto doing the concept sketch of the Encounter "red room" in his office at WDI in Glendale. Below, the "red room" sketch.

With the futuristic exterior of the building, WDI Imagineers must have felt that the best choice was to go space-age design with the interior, and, as you will see, they were right.

The intergalactic theme of the interior creates an out-of-this world "experience". Eddie and his team designed flowing walls sculpted to appear as stone quarried from the moon - here are Eddie's sketches.

Eddie also designed furniture and decor elements of the Encounter.

But one of Eddie's favorite creations were these "lava lamps" that guests can find all over the place whether the lava is "red" or "blue"!

The amoeba-shaped lighting structures embedded in the ceilings - visible from the outside - cast soft shadows on the restaurant. And the customized lava lights add a "lounge" feel to the futuristic and stratospheric atmosphere.

And there is this unique crater-shaped bar - above and below - complete with bar guns that emit lasers lights and futuristic sound effects when bartenders pour a drink!

Los Angeles designer Lisa Krohn created the bar stools and the pod-like chairs that appear to float in the air. The carpeting was designed by Sotto and Guevara and also features flowing lines. No patterns are repeated on the entire floor!

" Encounter transforms LAX into an intergalactic gateway accomodating space flights to and from other worlds " said Eddie Sotto. " the sophisticated sci-fi feel of the interior provides the perfect backdrop for what i call " jet set " dining in a space age atmosphere ". And the space-age experience even starts at the entrance downstairs where a hostess in silver costume directs you to the elevator, saying "Have a nice encounter!". By the way, the elevator was also redesigned and features galactic graphics and sound effects!

The stunning exterior lighting by Michael Valentino - a crowning touch to the space age themed restaurant - play an integral part in setting the unearthly tone. Michael's lighting program bathe the building with constantly changing shades such as magenta and electric blue, in addition to traditional white lights.

The Imagineers also designed special atmosphere music for the restaurant with sound effects reminding guests the classic sci-fi movies sounds of the 50's.

Watch Imagineer Eddie Sotto TED Talk, "The How of Wow!"

You probably all now the great TED talks, and recently the great Imagineer Eddie Sotto - who was show-producer for Disneyland Paris Main Street, TDL Winnie the Pooh, and many others great attractions - was invited to do a talk for TEDxBermuda during which Eddie explained "The How of Wow!" or how Disney parks magic is created. Don't miss this great video of Eddie, and below the video presentation text.

"Designer and former Disney Imagineer shows us how capture the sense of wonder that all children have and recreate it throughout life. He takes us behind the scenes of Disneyland and shows how the carefully designed environment eases us away from the outside world and brings us fully in to the fantastical experience.

Eddie Sotto was born in Hollywood, California to a family with strong Hollywood connections. His aunt, Marilyn Sotto, is a costume illustrator and designer who worked for Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Walt Disney Productions, and his grandfather Edward Sotto was a scenic artist at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and a portrait artist. His cinematic design style is largely self taught with mentors drawn from motion picture production designers and Disney's original artists.

Eddie has had a multifaceted career in creative design spanning over 30 years. He was Senior Vice President of Concept Design at Disney's Imagineering division, where he helmed his own Concept Development Studio and worked on key parts of Euro Disneyland and Disneyland Tokyo, as well as several of the world famous rides at the original campuses.

Exporting his skills beyond “The Mouse”, Sotto branched into creating for television, restaurant, hotel and UHNW residential interiors, even into spacecraft and private aviation, where he won a recent IYAA award for best Private Jet Concept. SottoStudios still consults to Disney on marketing strategy and Resort R&D."

Imagine a Yacht that can fly. That's what Eddie Sotto, the great WDI Imagineer show-producer of Main Street at Disneyland Paris, the Theme Building restaurant at LAX Airport, the L.A Rivera restaurant, and much more, has designed through his company Sotto Studios for Embraer. Disneyland Paris Update: Part Two : Indiana Jones Temple, Farewell to Main Street Photography, and more

Here we go for the part two of the Disneyland Paris update, always thanks to the pictures of Max Fan, D&M contributor and DLPWelcome webmaster. This time we'll have a look at what's happening in the Disneyland Park and more specifically in Adventureland where works already began to rebuild the whole temple of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril!

Also, make sure to read the article till the end as i have a great news for those of you who would like to meet someone who created Disneyland Paris 20 years ago, a great Imagineer!

But first, let's move through Main Street U.S.A with a stop at the Town Square Photography shop which soon won't be the same anymore as the shop will have its theme totally changed and will be known as Flora's Boutique. Guests already can't access the shop anymore, the last products inside have been removed and the future shop will sell products linked with the different DLP "seasons"  ( Spring, Summer, Halloween, Christmas ).

Previously, Kodak was the partner of Town Square Photography and, as you know, Kodak ended last year its partnership in all Disney theme parks. Considering that guests now shoot pictures with their digital camera or cell phones and don't use photo films anymore the park probably thought they could have a better use of the shop to increase their merchandise sales. It's a pity, though, as the shop had a fantastic theming and storyline, not to mention, dozens of old cameras and a great 1900 photographer office set by Imagineer Eddie Sotto.

We'll pay a last tribute to this great shop with the original WDI renderings and the great sign of the shop.

Let's continue our walk through the park under the grey winter sky...

A quick look at the cup of coffee to check that the smoke is always coming out of it... again, as it was for a long time in maintenance last year.

As you can see, whatever the angle you shoot the pictures the light is really terrible in that season...

And it's not any better on Central Plaza...

...in Fantasyland...

...in Discoveryland

...or in Adventureland.

However, something big is happening in Adventureland as the works to rebuild entirely in real stone most of the huge temple of Indiana Jones and Temple du Peril began and will last until May 28. It's probably the first time in Disney parks history that a whole decor will be rebuilt. The coaster track itself will remain in place but the part with the loop will be changed.

Let's move now to Disney Village where small improvements happened to the Sports Bar with a bigger TV screen replacing the old one, something that will appreciate guests who have a drink outside of the bar to watch sports events.

Just nearby the new LEGO shop had its opening delayed but it didn't stopped Max to check that products are already in place, and the opening should finally happen mid-February.
