The Real Reason Why Disney Built Disneyland Paris in France Instead of Spain, Explained by Michael Eisner Himself

Forbes posted a long article titled "Michael Eisner Reveals The Magic Touch That Gave A Glow To Disneyland Paris", which include Michael Eisner comments about why Disney decided to build Disneyland Paris in France instead than in another European country - Spain - which was also considered, back at the end of the eighties. And now, after 27 years since DLP opening, we have al last the answer why and it's coming from Michael Eisner himself. Below, some excerpts from the Forbes article, there is more to read in the full article HERE.

"One of Disney’s objectives was to develop far more land than the space on which its theme parks would sit. It needed more land so that it could maintain standards throughout the entire resort from the parks to the surrounding hotels and even the roads and nature reserves. It has done this at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and to pull it off in France, Disney requested a vast plot of land almost a fifth the size of Paris. It got what it wanted but it came with a catch.

The French government agreed to sell a 5,510 acre plot of land to Disney provided that the majority of it was developed in accordance with its vision. To ensure that it benefits the local area, and isn’t rushed through, the government only sells land to Disney in stages once previous plots have been completed.

“We wanted to be close to the biggest population base, the crossroads of Europe,” says Eisner. “Although the UK has a welcoming business and creative climate, we didn’t consider England for Euro Disney for the reasons of location. We considered France and Spain. Most of the strong Disney management we inherited would have preferred to go to Spain because of the presumed similarities to Los Angeles and Florida. But that was a false assumption. Florida is warmer than Spain in the winter and has a history of Disney available tourism. For decades American travelers travelled past Orlando on their way to Southern Florida to places like Miami. People left Boston, New York, Toronto and Philadelphia etc and drove through Florida to Miami".

“Of course, Spain, which is a fantastic country and would have been a good choice, did not have the history of Disney type tourism. If we had gone to Barcelona or even Valencia, it would not have been that warm in winter as Florida and it wasn’t a convenient route across Europe. Paris, on the other hand is in the middle and the big question was about the weather.”

In winter the temperature in Paris can fall to below 30 degrees and it regularly snows so Disney ensured that its parks in Paris have more covered pathways and queue lines than their counterparts in the US. It came up with a particularly attractive solution for its Disneyland Paris park which has a turn-of-the-century themed Main Street running through its center. On either side of the street are elaborate arcades decorated with wrought-iron beams and oil lamps. They are turned on in winter making the arcades a welcome refuge from the weather outside though Eisner says they may not have been necessary.

“I grew up in Manhattan and knew how people operated in the winter. The subway was our friend. Nothing kept us inside. I knew that the weather would not preclude anyone in New York walking down Main Street in the winter if the park was there. More importantly, if you grew up in London or Paris, the underground and the metro was part of your life. But most of Disney management at that point was California-based and people on the west coast cannot imagine going anywhere without a car."

“My view was that, unless there is a blizzard, people in France do not let the weather keep them from going out. We knew, if France agree to extend the RER to our front gate as well as the TGV, Disneyland Paris would work. And in addition the tunnel to the UK was on the horizon. So the big question on the table was whether to build in Spain, because of the Disney California mentality, or France because of my New York mentality. I never wavered."

“Jacques Chirac, the then Mayor of Paris, Laurent Fabius the then prime minister, and François Mitterrand delivered on what we needed, mainly enough land and transportation. The President did say on opening day that Disney was “not his cup of tea,” although he asked for Disney tee shirts for his grandchildren. Chirac on the other hand was all in having spent some of his youth in the USA. But from the very first day it was a smash hit as far as the public was concerned.”

Disneyland Paris New Lion King Show Will Also Be Projected at WDS Studio Theatre

As you know, a new Lion King show is coming to Disneyland Paris, starting June 30 in the new Frontierland Theatre that was re-built this year. Now, something unusual happened today as DLP announced on InsideEars that the show will also be projected daily at the WDS Studio Theatre, so in DLP second park.

Why do they do this, something which has never been done before in a Disney theme park? Well, first, you need to know that they're late on the theatre construction in Frontierland. The stage and the audience area is ready but not the backstage of the theatre. So, apparently DLP decided to play the show anyway, and postpone the end of the works on the backstage area ( or may be they'll do the works at night ) so they could play the show in time, as scheduled, specially considering that it's the main new attraction this year at DLP.

I've been told that Daniel Delcourt, at the head of DLP Operations, announced that the security commission came recently and gave its approval for the opening of the theatre, so the show will start at the end of June. On the other hand the WDS have less attractions than ever to offer to WDS guests now that Armaggedon is gone and that works are happening all over the Backlot area for its transformation in a Marvel land. So i think the main reason of this odd announcement is to increase the park capacity and the offering for WDS guests during this Summer season.

Will Disneyland Paris Phantom Manor Re-Open for DLP 27th Anniversary on April 12 ?

Some Disney and more readers planning to come to Disneyland Paris on April 12 for the park Anniversary asked me if chances are that Phantom Manor would re-open for this celebration day.

I'll give you an answer in a few seconds but, first, a reminder of what happened last week when Disneyland Paris released what could be seen as indirect news about Phantom Manor reopening when DLP announced that Spirit Photography, located temporarily in front of Phantom Manor, will close on April 23. At that time i said that it probably meant that Phantom Manor will NOT reopen before at least April 24, because Spirit Photography is right in front of the entrance of Phantom Manor, meaning that it had to be removed to allow guests to move inside Phantom Manor. I then added that, from that date Phantom Manor could reopen ANY day between April 24 and May 11, the date that leaked recently.

And guess what? I was wrong! After checking it appears that DLP announcement of the closure of Spirits Photography is nothing more than a regular closure announcement like the park does when they close a shop, a restaurant or an attraction. And if it happened that Phantom Manor is ready for an opening anytime soon they'll simply move in one night this small Spirits Photography to allow guests to enter inside Phantom Manor garden and access the ride. Which means that potentially, and if the attraction was at last ready, Phantom Manor could reopen before April 24.

Now, back to the question about a Phantom Manor reopening on April 12. The short answer is "probably not" as there is still no certainty on the re-opening date. DLP Imagineers would love to have it ready for April 12 and they're working hard to have the ride ready as soon as possible but due to the past shifts on the date this time it has to be a "dead sure" re-opening date.

In addition, Today is April 1st ( and by the way this article is NOT an April Fools! ) and DLP Anniversary is now in 11 days. And except if DLP Imagineers finally resolve all the issues they had on Phantom Manor in the next two days, it'll be probably too short for DLP to have everything ready for the park Anniversary ( to train the ride cast-members and maintenance team about the changes and new effects, to prepare a media event, send invitations, etc ).

But there is a big "but" as on April 12 DLP also organize during the evening an InsideEars event during which all webmasters of fans websites will learn plenty of informations about the park future. And of course, there is little doubt that the date of Phantom Manor re-opening will be announced. I don't think that InsideEars members will get a ride preview during this InsideEars evening, but never say never as if the ride happen to be ready in a few days, DLP might be tempted to do a preview during the InsideEars event...

So, most probably Phantom Manor will not be open on April 12 but from what i've heard so far it seems that DLP envision an opening for the very beginning of May, may be shortly before the target date of May 11 that was leaked one month ago. Meaning that DLP fans definitely won't have too long to wait now to discover the updated version of Phantom Manor - and don't worry, all the big, major scenes you love will still be there.

Photos, Videos : Disneyland Paris Marvel Super-Heroes Season Debut With Enhanced Shows and Super-Heroes Meet and Greet!

At Disneyland Paris the Season of Marvel Super-Heroes started today and thanks to Mx, D&M contributor and DLP Welcome webmaster we have pictures and 4K videos of the shows!

Lot of people today at DLP WDS for the start of the new seasons with long waiting time, up to two hours for the Marvel characters meet and greet, specially for Captain Marvel.

Right at the entrance of the Studio 1 a big Captain Marvel statue is also greeting the guests.

Among the different shows, the Marvel Super Hero United stunt show who started during the previous season is back at Studio Theater, with a new lighting by Lighting Designer Tim Lutkin, who did the lighting of the Mickey and the Magician show, and it looks to me and Max that he did a great job. In addition the new lighting helps to don't see the cables allowing to have some Marvel characters "flying" over the stage.

The object looking like a kind of flying saucer which was flying above the spectators is now only suspended over the guests but not moving anymore - apparently or probably for security reasons.
The other drones are according to Max a bit smalle rthan last season, allowing to better see the lighting effects. According to Max, the show is much better than last year even if the  storyline is always one for a stunt show, i.e a bit primary.

Have a look to the full new show with the first 4K video below!

The other show "Stark Expo, For a Better Future"  is located on the oudoor stage and according to Max is "super!" with Red Skull, Loki, Black Widow, Spider-Man et dancers ( good or villains ) plus Captain Marvel! Have a look at the full show in the 4K vidoe below but it looks to me better than last year too. Note that there is too a "Dance with Guardians of the Galaxy" show, also on the outdoor stage, on which Groot appear for the first time, but the video will be added soon.

If Max could not shoot pictures of the Captain Marvel meet and greet because of the two hours wait time he did shot pictures of the one with Spider-Man which still had one hour wait ( without reservations ).

The New York yellow cabs below were previously at the Hotel New York and now serve as background decor.

Disneyland Paris Season of Marvel Super-Heroes Starts This Saturday at DLP Walt Disney Studios, New "Disney Nature" Pre-Show Coming for Disney Illuminations Night Show

At Disneyland Paris the Season of Marvel Super-Heroes starts this Saturday at DLP Walt Disney Studios! Among the different shows, the Marvel Super Hero Alliance stunt show who started during the previous season will be back at Studio Theater, with some changes.

Celine Tamaillon, Producer of the Season, unveil what lies ahead:
- The show has a new logo and a brand new visual introduction
- The lighting has been redesigned by Lighting Designer Tim Lutkin, who already officiates on Mickey and the Magician
-  The object looking like a kind of flying saucer flying above the spectators has been replaced and the effect enhanced
- The final stunt show fight will be even more epic, each Super Hero now having its "moment of glory"!
- New sound effects will punctuate the action and Thor will make a new smashing entrance!

"Kids and adults alike will be delighted to find their favorite Super Heroes facing Thanos together in an even more dynamic production. This year, we were able to take into account the comments of our visitors, to further improve the show both technically and artistically. They will appreciate it even more! "

Disney and more will have a video of the newly enhanced show on Sunday so make sure to stay tuned to D&M!

Also, from March 30 – April 30, Disneyland Paris will partner with Disneynature to offer guests a unique, nature-themed pre-show for the “Disney Illuminations” nighttime spectacular at Disneyland Paris park.

Every night from March 30 till April 30, the animals from Disney Nature movies “Bears,” “Born in China,” “The Crimson Wing” or “Oceans,” will have a starring role in this new pre-show projected on Sleeping Beauty Castle!

And there is one more good reason to order this eBook edition: the pictures have never looked so beautiful, and there is a reason for that: the eBook reproduce the original pictures files exactly as they are,  meaning that the pictures look 100% like the originals as you don't have the usual loss or slightly change in colors that usually happen during the printing, as good as the printer can be.

And to celebrate the release of the book in its English digital edition the first 100 people to order it in eBook format can get the book at the price of 14,99 € if it is pre-ordered before March 30! And there is no shipping fee as it is an eBook edition! Once released, the ebook will be sold on the Apple, Android eBook stores at 29,99€ and on Amazon Kindle at a higher price.

Disneyland Paris Frontierland & Phantom Manor Update

Here we go for a new DLP update, this time all about Frontierland AND the  awaited reopening of Phantom Manor, thanks to pictures shot by Max, D&M contributor and DLP Welcome webmaster. Phantom Manor reopening has many delays and was expected to finally on February 16, but recently we learned that, finally, it won't be before April.

About this new delay of Phantom Manor reopening, as many of you are asking me what is happening, here it is: basically it’s simply technical issues which takes longer than expected to be solved. DLP Imagineers are doing some changes in the ride - don’t worry, all Phantom Manor most famous and beloved scenes will be untouched - but some elements will be enhanced and there will be some things really new that i can’t talk about here. As usual in life, sometime everything runs smoothly and sometime not and it takes more time. In addition, as you know, Phantom Manor is an attraction using the Omnimover, i.e everything must be correctly synchronized with the endless passage of each doom buggy, something which is sometime more easy to say than to do. But with a bit of luck everything will be finally ready for a reopening before April, though probably not before the end of February. So, Phantom Manor might have a reopening sooner than April, except if DLP wants to keep the reopening for DLP 27th Anniversary on April 12.

The outeside area of Phantom Manor has been entirely renovated and the work is remarkable with a high quality result. Whether it’s the woods, the scenery, the gardens, everything hass been renovated. Among the novelties we can notice the new lighst that surround the house, but also new smooth staircases facing the main gate of the manor for access to the paying Fast Pass that will be proposed as soon as the attraction will reopen. in April with 7 months of delay on the initial reopening date.

After several months of interruption, the geysers are working again!

Let's move to the other end of Frontierland to discover the progress of tthe works on the site of the new Chaparral Theater. Construction is moving fast, and fortunately as its opening is scheduled for summer 2019. The foundations have been done and the walls will be installed soon. The area can't be accessed for now as guests can't move further than the Cowboy Cookout Barbecue and can't even access even to Cottonwood Creek Ranch area by train as DLP railroad is stopped until March, officially.

You can see the aesthetics of the new room. The colors used are warmer than those of the other buildings in the land. Here are again the blueprints of the new Chaparral theatre.

More DLP updates will come soon, in the mean time don't miss the Christmas special offer for the last copies of the 320 pages book Disneyland Paris book "From Sketch to Reality" atthe best price available on the web!
