D&M Exclusive : The Mansion which Inspired HKDL Imagineers for Hong Kong Disneyland Mystic Manor

I'm a huge fan of HKDL Mystic Point and Mystic Manor, the ride became a classic from day one and i couldn’t say enough good things about it! Back in 2012 i did an article on Disney and more following an info provided to me by late Imagineer Pat Burke. Pat told me he had sent to Mystic Manor Imagineers team pictures of the old Glendale Sanitarium, thinking it could help as inspiration for Mystic Manor and that's what the article was about. You can read it HERE if you haven't read it yet and, below, a picture of the Glendale Sanitarium.

Now, last month, Christopher DiMattei who is architect sent me an email about this article, saying that i was wrong, that in fact the inspiration came from "acclaimed American architect, George F. Barber (1854-1915) concepts”, someone he’s a big specialist about, and Christopher was kind enough to add some pictures to show how Mystic Manor look similar to Barber Concepts. Here is what Christopher is saying about this:

"Acclaimed American architect, George F. Barber (1854-1915) was, what is now called, a “pattern book” or “mail-order” architect, in that, he published many of his designs in books and other publications, in an effort to market his services, and promote his “brand” of architecture.  Prospective builders of homes would often purchase his books or other publications, so that they could learn more about the construction process, and so that they could see what was available for home designs.  Once the book was in hand, the prospective home builders would usually engage in writing to Barber (via snail mail, of course), and begin the process of customizing a favorite design they may have selected from the Barber pattern book they purchased.  When the design process was complete George Barber would mail to his client, a set of construction drawings and specifications that the client could provide to a local carpenter or house builder, so that the home could be built, wherever the client happened to live.  This sort of thing happened thousands of times throughout the 1890’s and into the early 1900’s.  If fact, it happened so many times, that George Barber is perhaps America’s most prolific architect, having produced an estimated 20,000 sets of mail-order plans, throughout his roughly 25 year career (roughly 1888-1913).  I have been researching and documenting the vast portfolio of Barber’s architecture for many years now, and I have amassed quite a lot of data on the subject, and I have recorded over 2,000 examples of homes attributed to him.  This is how I came to recognize Mystic Manor as a stylized copy of one of George Barber’s published designs."

"So, with that, let me show you what I am talking about.  Check out the first picture ( picture above ).  As you can see, there is way more than a general similarity, between the two images.  The sketch on the right was George Barber’s front elevation that he published in his 1891 pattern book entitled “The Cottage Souvenir No. 2”.  In that publication, this design appeared as “Design No. 53”.  Many examples of this design were built by clients of George Barber.  My research has documented 22 examples of this particular design, built throughout the USA, some of which you can see in the second attached file ( picture below )."

Christopher added: "Now I’m not sure what WDI Imagineer Pat Burke told you, or where he got his information from, but the Glendale Sanitarium is not even close to looking like “inspiration” for Mystic Manor, when the George Barber design I have showed you today, is nearly an exact copy of the design used to build Mystic Manor in Hong Kong.  But I would be very curious to hear what he has to offer in reply, should you forward this info on to him.  Perhaps you can share that with me when you get a response?"

Unfortunately Pat Burke passed away two years ago, something that Christopher did not knew, so it was not possible to check with Pat. And it's at that point that i had the idea to ask directly WDI Imagineer Joe Lanzisero who was the show producer on Mystic Manor, as if there is someone who should know the truth, it is Joe!

Joe Lanzisero kindly answered to me, saying:

"
Hi Alain, Thanks for your inquiry.  Neither Pat Burke or Architect DiMattei are correct. We based the general shapes and forms of Mystic Manor off of the Carson Mansion in Old Town Eureka California. Carson Mansion was the work of San Francisco architects Sam and Joseph Cather Newsom. I also used the Carson Manor as inspiration for Goofy's house at Toontown in Anaheim and Tokyo. Thanks for coming to the source for the accurate answer."

And how look this Carson Mansion, you ask? Well, here are some pictures of it.

The next picture below is showing the inside of Carson Mansion.

Actually, the Carson Mansion has so many fans that one of them recreated it in CGI and here is the map he did of the inside of the mansion. I'm not sure that HKDL Imagineers really followed the same blueprint for the inside of Mystic Manor but i post the picture below anyway.

Now, according to Joe Lanzisero, and there is no reason to doubt Joe as, again, he was at the head of the Mystic Manor project, it's this Carson Mansion which served as inspiration and it does look indeed very close to Mystic Manor. Of course, the Imagineers didn't copied the Carson Mansion exactly 100% as it is, adding different elements here and there, not to mention the Russian looking bulbs at the top of some towers, which are pure Imagineering.

On the other hand i have to say that the Barber concepts sent to me by Christopher DiMattei look also incredibly similar to Mystic Manor. So where is the truth? Did HKDL Imagineers took their inspiration a bit from both Carson Mansion and George Barber concepts? Apparently the architectural style was popular early last century so it's may be not surprising that both Carson Mansion and George Barber concepts have reminiscences one from each other. Anyway, Mystic Manor is a true wonder which deserves to be discovered by any Disney fan so don't miss it during your next trip to Hong Kong Disneyland!

Will Mystic Manor Open at Shanghaî Disneyland in 2018 ?...

When Shanghaî Disney Resort released two weeks ago the bird eye view rendering below, some readers asked me if the silhouette in the background of Fantasyland could be Mystic Manor, meaning that the beloved HKDL ride could be part of Shanghaî Disneyland. My first answer, mainly because it was so tiny on the artwork was "i don't think so...". And then, with a bit of D&M magic i found a way to upscale the picture without having too much pixelation, and my opinion - wrong or right - has changed.

Let me show you why. Below, the part of the SDL bird eye view supposedly showing Mystic Manor, in dark blue color on the left, with on the right what we think will be the Winnie the Pooh ride and Hunny Pot Spin, in dark red.

The reason why some readers thought that it could be Mystic Manor is because of the architecture that we can guess in the silhouette and of course the tower at the top so distinctive of Mystic Manor.  There is also apparently on the right another structure and could it be the Mystic Point Explorers restaurant, or simply a shop?

Now, have a look at a picture of the Mystic Manor / Mystic Point model as it was presented at the D23 Expo. I know that the picture above is not clear but it looks like it could be very well Mystic Manor, right?

But there are others reasons why i'm finally thinking that SDL will include a Mystic Manor. First, in all Disney Magic Kingdoms we always find a haunted house. They could put at SDL a Haunted Mansion, even in Fantasyland - after all they did it at Tokyo Disneyland - but i think that the Victorian look of the Haunted Mansion as we know it in the U.S would be less appealing for the Chinese than the colonial / multi style look of Mystic Manor. Not to mention that Mystic Manor is less scary than the Haunted Mansion and so could fit better in a Fantasyland.

The other reason is more pragmatic: Mystic Manor is hugely popular since day one at HKDL, and if Hong Kong Chinese enjoy this slightly "haunted" house then there is no reason that Chinese of China main land will not enjoy it. This would mean a promise of success for an attraction which got last year the fully deserved 2013 THEA Award for "Outstanding Achievement Attraction". Also, we know that the company like to avoid as much as possible research and development costs, and here they won't have any as they've been paid previously by Hong Kong Disneyland. So, double bingo.

And by the way, this also could eventually explain why we don't see the Toy Story Land which was on the leaked SDL map last year on the new rendering. I remind you that not so long ago Disney announced they will put additional hundred of millions of dollars in SDL to improve the overall SDL rides an shows. So, "may be" they've decided that having Mystic Manor in a Magic Kingdom was a better idea than having a Toy Story Land... and decided to cancel TSL and have instead Mystic Manor, even if the cost of Mystic Manor is more expensive.

BUT, as there is always a "but", if Mystic Manor is coming to Shanghaî Disneyland it won't open before 2018.  Why? Because HKDL has an exclusivity on it during five years. Mystic Point opened summer 2013 at HKDL, so it can't be before summer 2018 at SDL. That said, it will be interesting to see if the Mystic Manor building itself will be built at SDL opening day, avoiding to have cranes and construction works starting soon after SDL opening. In this case we could have, just like with Disneyland Haunted Mansion in the 1960's, an attraction building which will wait a few years to open its doors.

Now, there is of course a possibility that i'm all wrong, that this silhouette in the back of SDL Fantasyland is something entirely different. Let's say the chances are fifty / fifty. However, my instinct tells me that we can reasonably put our bets on a Mystic Manor for Shanghaî Disneyland and all we have to do now is to wait till 2018 to see if i'm right or not!

Walt Disney Imagineering Honored by Three THEA Awards !

Three WDI attractions have won THEA Awards - the equivalent of the Oscars for Theme Parks attractions - as it was announced yesterday during a ceremony in Orlando by the Themed Entertainment Association announcing the 2013 winners.

No surprise, Hong Kong Disneyland's Mystic Manor received a fully deserved Award for "Outstanding Achievement – Attraction, which noted the original storyline, special effects, Audio-Animatronics technology, musical score by Danny Elfman, and the trackless, wire-guided ride vehicles as reasons for excellence". TEA noted that “Mystic Manor exemplifies the seamless integration of the latest technology with true state-of-the-art storytelling.”

The next WDI attraction to received a THEA award was Enchanted Tales with Belle, at WDW MK New Fantasyland, and it won the Award for "Outstanding Achievement – Participatory Character Greeting for being “far more than the typical character greeting experience… It is a creative blend of excellent design, imaginative interactivity and technical wizardry.”

Last but not least WDI also won a third THEA award and this one was for...  Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary which received the Thea Classic award. "This landmark attraction is “the world’s first Audio-Animatronics show – introducing a new technology that soon became one of the dominant tools used by designers and engineers in our industry.” Disney won others Thea Classic Award in the past for Disneyland Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean, Disneyland park itself, and Epcot.

The Thea Awards ceremony, a black-tie gala will happen April 5, 2014, at the Disneyland Hotel and Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Executive at Walt Disney Imagineering said “It is very rewarding to be honored by the Themed Entertainment Association, which represents our peers throughout the industry. We are especially proud that all three of these projects represent the best of Disney storytelling and the spirit of innovation we bring to our guests,”. HKDL Mystic Point Grand Opening Celebration

Hong Kong Disneyland had its Grand Opening celebration today...under the rain as it was a rainy day over Hong Kong! That didn't stopped Guests of Honor the Honorable John Tsang, Financial Secretary, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Mr. Bill Ernest, President and Managing Director, Asia Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to declare Mystic Point officially open. Each of the guests of Honor then placed a key on the top of the box in front of them...

...and magically the box opened revealing Mystic Manor's music box, which is at the center of the ride story.

“Today we mark the completion of Hong Kong Disneyland’s current expansion project on a high note with the opening of Mystic Point. This one-of-a-kind themed area has never been seen in any of our Disney parks worldwide,” said Bill Ernest.“For the first time, guests can immerse themselves in a unique adventure of theatrical wonders that combines traditional storytelling with innovative technology and special effects. The ‘Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriage’ in Mystic Manor is by far the most sophisticated ride system in Disney’s history".

The story of Mystic Point follows the adventures of eccentric explorer and art collector Lord Henry Mystic, who invites guests to board the Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriage for a tour of his private museum located within his Victorian manor. When Lord Henry’s companion, his monkey Albert, mischievously opens a newly acquired magical music box, the enchanted Music Dust within is released and, accompanied by a haunting tune created by renowned composer Danny Elfman, a mysterious journey begins.

Here is the whole HKDL press release and do not miss below my three others articles posted today to celebrate the opening of Mystic Point, with new pictures and videos:

With the addition of Toy Story Land in 2011, Grizzly Gulch in 2012 and Mystic Point this year, the size of Hong Kong Disneyland has increased by almost 25%, further enhancing its appeal with over 100 attractions, entertainment facilities and shows.

Since April, the Park has arranged a series of preview days for more than 30,000 guests, including Magic Access members, trade partners, business partners, Cast Members and their families, media, bloggers and celebrities. The preliminary feedback from guests has been overwhelmingly positive, with many describing Mystic Point as a truly mysterious journey that is full of surprises. Guests were particularly intrigued by the Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriage, the dark ride within Mystic Manor, which blends beautiful visuals with fascinating special effects.Based on a survey conducted among 2,700 travel trade partners who attended the three-day trade preview, 94% of  agents believed their clients will like Mystic Point and 89% of them felt their guests would choose a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland because of this new themed area.

To celebrate the opening of Mystic Point in Hong Kong, a creative advertising campaign will be launched to bring viewers on a journey to unlock the mystery of Mystic Point. In addition to traditional advertising medium such as TV, print and out-of-home media, the resort will also leverage interactive media to create an innovative communications strategy to entice consumers to visit Mystic Point. These include an online video with illusions and surprises to netizen, a TV program allowing viewers to interact using their smartphones and the use of convenience store displays as interactive gallery walls.

The mystery of Mystic Point will extend
its reach to select overseas markets. A consumer event will be held at the end of May in Jakarta, Indonesia – the first of its kind in this location. Publicity activities in other markets, including Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and India, are also in the pipeline. For the travel trade community, over 2,000 partners will be engaged through webinars and in-market trade launch events in Mainland China, Taiwan and Korea. The Park will also collaborate with some prominent TV programs in Mainland China.

“The successful completion of the three new themed areas marks a milestone for Hong Kong Disneyland and the travel industry. We are confident that Mystic Point, along with Toy Story Land and Grizzly Gulch, will be the key drivers of growth for our ResortAs Walt Disney once said, ‘Disneyland will never be completed as long as there is imagination left in the world.’ The same applies to Hong Kong Disneyland, which will continue to grow, contribute to Hong Kong’s economy and create countless magical experiences for guests of all ages and origins,” said Andrew Kam.

Mystic Point is comprised of the iconic Mystic Manor, which features one of the most sophisticated ride systems ever built by Disney; a themed photo area called Garden of Wonderswith mystifying 3D illusions; the Explorer’s Club Restaurant, which offers international cuisines ranging from Korean and Japanese to Halal food in exotic surroundings; The Archive Shop, where guests can purchase exclusive novelty items and collectibles; and the Mystic Point Freight Depot, where Lord Henry’s grandnephews share with guests stories from their adventures with Lord Henry.

HKDL Mystic Point Grand Opening : The Explorer's Club Restaurant and Archives Shop

In this third part of my today's Mystic Point article series celebrating the opening of Mystic Point at HKDL we will have a closer look at the Explorer's Club restaurant and Archives merchandise shop.

The Explorer's Club is Mystic Point main restaurant. Although i've been told that some of the artifacts of the beloved WDW Pleasure Island Adventurer's Club have found a new home at HKDL Mystic Point, the Explorer's Club is just what it is supposed to be, i.e the land restaurant with different rooms themed on different countries, Egypt, Morocco, Russia, China, and more...

Next to the Explorer's Club is The Archives shop, Mystic Manor merchandise shop, and this one looks pretty cool and with an interesting architecture and theming.

Even better, it seems that you'll be able to find some really cool merchandise at The Archives shop, including some inspired by a scene of the ride like this darts game with Albert the monkey, inspired by the ride tikis room scene.

Inside the Magic has posted a video in which HKDL Imagineers will tell you more about the new land and the Explorer's Club as well as The Archives shop!

HKDL Mystic Point Grand Opening : Mystic Point Garden of Wonders

Here is the second article in my Mystic Point series articles to celebrate the Grand Opening today and tomorrow of HKDL new land. The part one is below, and in this part two we will have a closer look to the other magical area of Mystic Point, the Garden of Wonders, a garden with antiques artifacts delivering optical illusions that HKDL guests can enjoy.

In the Garden of Wonders, several ancient sculptures and mosaics with unbelievable 3D illusions are displayed. Guests must view them from particular angles to unlock their mysteries, which offer the most bewildering and mystifying photo-taking experiences! Anamorphic sculpture and bas-relief anamorphic pylons which looks separated in three pieces but when one look at them from a precise angle the pieces magically come together like if they were one.

As vast as Lord Henry’s collection is, precious artifacts from different historical backgrounds are temporarily stored at the Mystic Point Freight Depot, artifacts with which guests can have fun by putting their face at the right place.

Mystic Point Freight Depot is also the place where Lord Henry’s grandnephews share stories with Guests from their adventures with Lord Henry. They have also invited friends they have met along the way to join them, and cultural ambassadors appear in traditional Native American, Egyptian, Bulgarian, Indian and Mexican attire, further enhancing the exotic international flavor of Mystic Point.

I have a great new video to share with you, probably the best i've seen so far showing Mystic Point and you'll see the Garden of Wonders as well as the whole new land like never before. The video also include the show at Mystic Point Freight Depot as well as the whole Mystic Manor ride!
