Amazing LIFE Magazine Pictures of Disneyland on Opening Day ! - Part One : Main Street U.S.A & Fantasyland

Hello Everyone! I'm back on Disney and more and i have something pretty exceptional for you, and with so many pictures that it will be a four part article!

What you will see today and the next days are very rare pictures of Disneyland shot by LIFE Magazine photographers Allan Grant and Loomis Dean. Most of them were shots on Disneyland opening day or July 1955 as indicated by LIFE and some a bit later but most if not all of the pics were shot during Disneyland first days, in 1955. And they're all in glorious 1950's colors, so as usual click on each to see them in larger size!

Not only these pictures show Disneyland as it looks at its very beginning but, even more precious, they allow you to "feel" the atmosphere, the people, the energy of the era... Fantastic pictures, really.

Edited: The Part Two of the article showing incredible pictures of Tomorrowland on Disneyland opening day is now also online HERE and the part three with Frontierland pictures on opening day is online HERE

We will start by pictures shot by photographer Allan Grant on opening day with the famous shots of Mickey and the children running through Sleeping Beauty Castle and then back from Fantasyland.

Disneyland was open, and the first guests step in Main Street U.S.A!

Two rare pictures of Disneyland first parade - not shot the same day!

The picture below showing the end of the parade was shot on opening day.

At Main Street Station guests embark in the Disneyland Railroad trains.

The two next pictures show two different trains, with the parking lot and Katella Avenue in the background. And as you can see, strictly nothing else existed or was built around Disneyland at that time.

It's hard to think that DL guests embarked in what looks like a full size replica of Walt Disney's Carolwood Pacific miniature train but yes, it did exist! The picture was shot apparently from the back of Tomorrowland, like the one above.

Let's move to Fantasyland with another shot showing the kids running to the castle. You can see that it was shot on opening day because of the scaffolding in the background on the top of which where the TV cameramen.

Here we come, Fantasyland, with a picture shot from the top of the pirate ship by Loomis Dean, like most of the shots below!

Let's do a zoom on the Mad Hatter tea cups - at that time located near the Carousel.

Let's move to Peter Pan's Flight with pictures of the mural painting of the loading room...

...and an amazing picture showing how basic was the load / unload at that time. Unbelievable. Now, due to safety regulations they couldn't do this anymore but, yes, that's how it looked on opening day!

We move now to the Snow White dark ride with two pictures showing Disneyland guests in the ride vehicle, which as you will notice have changed a lot since opening day!

Let's do like these children moving out of the "Sleepy" vehicle and let's go to Mr Toad Wild ride nearby with a series of pictures of guests inside the Mr Toad vehicle.

Not too far from Mr Toad was the Dumbo ride and the Pirate ship!...

...as well as Casey Jr and Storybook Land.

You've note on the picture above the cameraman filming for the Grand Opening TV Special. In the distance guests could see the Disneyland Railroad passing by...

A last look to Fantasyland...

And with the children let's run through the castle to the next land...

...and for us it will be Tomorrowland in the part two of this article with stunning pictures of the land on opening day! The Tomorrowland article is now online HERE. and the part three with Frontierland pictures on opening day is online HERE

Editor's Note: I'm back on D&M with new updates! Below a "movie" update that you should have a look at as four interesting Scs-Fi movies are coming soon in a theatre near you! But it's tomorrow update that you don't want to miss as i have something pretty exceptional for you - and it'll be a four part article!

Four Great Sci-Fi Movies Coming Soon in a Theater Near You !

After a summer with a bit too much of super heroes blockbusters movies be prepared to fly to outer space as four sci-fi movies which looks interesting if not great are coming soon in theaters!

The first one to be released - in limited theaters supposedly on August 2 - is "Europa Report" which is " a unique blend of documentary, alternative history and science fiction thriller, EUROPA REPORT follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter's moon Europa to investigate the possible existence of alien life within our solar system. When unmanned probes suggest that a hidden ocean could exist underneath Europa's icy surface and may contain single-celled life, Europa Ventures, a privately funded space exploration company, sends six of the best astronauts from around the world to confirm the data and explore the revolutionary discoveries that may lie in the Europan ocean".

Described as the first sci-fi movie in the "found footage" genre the reviews so far are good with a 77% fresh tomatoes on rottentomatoes.com. Here is the trailer.

The next one, scheduled for August 9 is Elysium starring the great Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. The story of this one will take place partly on Earth, partly in a space station called "Elysium": "In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet's crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium - but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens' luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission - one that pits him against Elysium's Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces - but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well".

Georges Clooney and Sandra Bullock are playing in the next one called "Gravity", to be released October 4: "Directed by Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuaron, stars Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone."

Definitely a "Houston, we have a problem" movie, it should looks great on an IMAX screen, and here is the extended trailer which shows even a bit too much, in my opinion...

The last one might top all the others and is the highly awaited "Ender's Game" , to be released on November 1. "Based on the best-selling, award winning novel, Ender's Game is an epic adventure which stars Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, with Abigail Breslin and Harrison Ford.In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite. Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military's next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he's trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race".

Here is the trailer, it looks bloody good indeed, and hey, there is Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley!

And while we talk about outer space i'm adding this other video about a small audio-animatronic that was sent to the International Space Station just a few hours ago - in addition with a 4K camera -and this one is "made in Japan" by Toyota. Kirobo - the robot's name - has a look clearly inspired by Astro Boy and was created by Tomotaka Takahashi. His mission will be to talk with japanese spationaut Koichi Wakata coming at the ISS in November. But as you will see in the video below Kirobo had to be tested in weightlessness atmosphere to make sure he will move and talk correctly once inside the ISS!

Theme Tours, a Theme Park Travel Site That Worth Bookmarking !

Stefan Zwanzger - aka "The Theme Park Guy" - is the web master of the excellent Theme Park Guy website and also of the highly popular ThemeparkX Construction Board which brings you daily construction updates on all the theme parks projects around the world.

But recently Stefan launched a new web site called Theme Tours and i must say that it is not only a brilliant idea but also exactly what we were all missing! Anyone - and i mean anyone - planning to visit this year a theme park in any country should do the jump to Theme Tours instantly, and here is why.

Theme Tours is a web site which is here to help you to save money on your next theme park vacation whatever the theme park will be - Disney or not - and, boy, don't we need to save money when we go to Disney theme parks, right? So, not only Stefan who travelled all around the world share extremely useful tips that even me - who also have travelled around the world - didn't knew but the site also include great price comparison pages which will help you to find theme park tickets and hotels rooms at the best price.

Let's have a closer look to Theme Tours. When you arrive on the front page - picture on top - you can choose between different section and, for instance, if you choose the "tickets" section you arrive on a page where in less than five seconds you'll be able to see all the prices available for all the major theme parks in the world. And you might have some good surprises, just like i did when i typed "Disneyland Paris". With DLP price policy i thought that they were the less expensive, but not! There are websites which sell DLP tickets at a better price!

The Hotels price comparison page is also very well done as it will do the search on all the majors hotels sites, the ones known to have the best room prices. Except that here you do the search on all of them at the same time. And when i see the hotel prices at Disney parks the least we can say is that we really need to find hotels at decent prices. This is the page where you will save a lot of precious dollars...

AND, because more is never  too much, you'll find also on Theme Tours a special page on which Stefan gives you the secret discount codes for major travel sites which will help you to save additional 10 to 20% on the hotels price, and this in addition to the already best prices you'll have find on the price comparison page. And by the way, you can use Theme Tours even if your vacation is not in a theme park, but any other destination in the world.

There is others precious section on Theme Tours, like the Visas page which will help you to know what kind of visa you need depending to which country you're flying. And the informations are based on IATA's Timatic database which is used by nearly every airline in the world for determining passenger travel document requirements.

But i've kept the best for the end, and it's the "Tips" page. A section of the site on which Stefan gives  precious tips to save more money - like "how to always get the lowest price", "how to avoid crowds and queues", "which travel site to book at, and why", "the good, the bad and the ugly airlines",  and also where you will find for $25 the "Travel Savings Secrets Report", which include Stefan's best tips that will help you to save even more money on your next vacation.  Most of the tips were unknown to me - like the one which explain how to get a better plane ticket price on the major airlines companies, depending of the final destination you enter. Or the one telling you the trick to find easily the name of the "secret hotel" - you know these "secret hotels" that you find now on a lot of travel sites which propose you to book a room in a 4 stars hotels for just 20% of the normal price.  The hotel name is hidden and normally you discover it only after you did your booking, but Stefan learn you how to find easily the name of these "secret hotels".

Anyway, Theme Tours is definitely a site to put in your bookmarks, mainly because of its "all in one" concept which for sure will be very helpful for your next vacation. Go ahead, and do the jump right HERE.

Here is why WDI Imagineers work so hard to deliver stunning attractions

You know, i presume - or at least you imagine - the incredible amount of work that is needed from WDI Imagineers to create a Disney attraction. But why WDI Imagineers accept to go through this long and hard work? Because they love to create rides, of course, but also for another reason: to create this kind of emotion, the one you can see on the face of this little girl on this picture, shot by a LIFE Magazine photographer inside one of the subs of Disneyland Submarine Voyage, back in June 1960.
