Disneyland Paris : Automata-mericana , The Main Street U.S.A Attraction That Never Was

Among all the attractions that never were for Disneyland Paris, one that i miss the most is the "Automata-mericana" concept that Imagineer Eddie Sotto envisioned for Main Street U.S.A.

The idea for this one goes way back to discussions with Herb Ryman in 1988. Imagineers wanted to call it Automata-mericana. As you know Walt Disney had loved miniatures, and Animatronics began with his fascination for French Automata. As you may recall too, he had an antique mechanical bird (which Eddie Sotto paid homage in Walt's Restaurant). There was a space available on Town Square East - under the Dentist where (Franklin Electric was originally) - and that space was considered for the added capacity program the year after DLP opening ( Les Mystères du Nautilus, Indiana Jones and more were part of that ).

On an Imagineering research trip in 1988 Imagineers had visited a funny Automata museum in Covent Garden, London, ( called Mechanical Cabaret Theater, since gone ) and they were inspired by the displays and how much people enjoyed them. The exhibit displays were not antiques, but rather new designs and it gave to Eddie Sotto the idea that Imagineers could make their own and customize them. The prescription vending beheaded doctor, "Shrunken Ned" at Disneyland Adventureland was inspired by one of the automata display there. Imagineer Eddie Johnson worked with Eddie and he came up with a series of sketches for the animated displays, each portraying life on Main Street in a funny way. Eddie Sotto recall his drawing of the Main Street cinema for one. Among these was a Barber Shop, Fire Station and Market House too, each with the Main Street "citizens" doing funny things.

For Eddie and the Imagineers the idea was to bridge the language barrier and show rather than explain the story of American life in that time period by using intricate display animation. Budget for the "added capacity program" unfortunately ate up all of the Main Street enhancements, except for an additional Steam Train - the Eureka. Eddie would still love to build this and think it would be a crowd pleaser in a quaint way. The sepia tone artwork was a sketch above is from Eddie Sotto.

The video below show some of the actual exhibits Imagineers saw back then, in London. Done in a Disney style with a Main Street Story, they would have been a great addition, with lots of humor.

This next video shows Disneyland Adventureland "Shrunken Ned" - Eddie Sotto play his voice.

If DLP had the budget to do it it still will be possible to add this Automata-mericana attraction where Eddie Sotto wanted to build it, so let's hope that someone at DLP will remember this great concept and will decide to add it at DLP Main Street U.S.A!

Hong Kong Disneyland Main Street U.S.A New Shop "Victorian Collections"

Hong Kong Disneyland opened a brand new shop in Main Street U.S.A and it is called "Victorian Collections". The shop is located on the east side of Main Street and was built between two existing shops. One of the existing shop next to it, the Curiosity Shop, is owned by someone named "Victoria", and chances are that in WDI storyline this new "Victorian Collection" shop is an extention of the other shop owned by Victoria.

The reason why they've built this shop is of course to link the two previously existing shops. From what i've been told HKDL wants to manage more easily the merchandise business on Main Street, because the Emporium and Curiosity Shop are separated, and some of the merchandisings are overlapping to each other. Victorian Collections is making the link and now two shops are becoming one. It's interesting to know that in HKDL Main Street backstory the street is divided into two sides, the left one is "the American residents" and the right one is "the new immigrants". That is the reason why HKDL still have the Indian Native Statue on Main Street in tribute to the harmony of Americans in 1900's.

Apparently, Victorian Collections doesn't have yet many exclusive goods but this should change anytime soon and this new shop is not temporary and is here to stay. That said, i'll have to see it by myself to be sure that its exterior style fits well with the others Main Street shops and, to say the truth, so far i'm not totally convinced. But the interior theming looks good, so let's have a look at it with "day and night" pictures.

Among the items you can see in the shop are old newspapers and magazines all with Main Street official date: 4th Aug, 1898. Very unfortunately you can't buy them, they're here only as part of the shop theming.

See you soon for more news of HKDL, and in the meantime, don't miss the great HKDL Wallpapers HD App for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch!

Helicopter Crashes on Disneyland Paris Main Street U.S.A !

Someone just sent me this video shot some days ago during a nice but cold day at Disneyland Paris. It was so cold that there were only a few people in the park, but that's not the problem. What is the problem is that apparently something unimaginable happened in Main Street U.S.A as a helicopter literally crashed in the center of Main Street! Don't worry, no one was hurt including the cameraman. I let you have a look at the video first and i'll be back after and tell you what really happened.

So, did this helicopter crash happened for real? Of course not! All this was done thanks to an amazing new iPhone app called Action Movie FX released recently by a company called Bad Robot Interactive. And when you'll know that the company was created by director J.J Abrams - yes, the one who created the Lost TV series and directed the last Star Trek movie or produced the latest Mission Impossible, you'll understand why the effects are so good. This Youtube video uploaded by MattsMacintosh tell you more about the app and show as well other special effects.

Two more examples with this car falling and crashing...

Or a Santa Claus literally blow up by a missile...

The app is extremely simple to use - it couldn't be more simple - the FX is add in less than five seconds and considering how fast the FX is done the result is pretty amazing. The app is FREE on the iTunes Appstore and include two FX and you can add four more through a very cheap in-app purchase. Kids are also having a lot of fun with this one, as you can expect.
