D&M Exclusive: Marty Sklar's retirement party at Walt Disney Imagineering - Edited 19/7 with new pictures of the WDI party !

Last thursday, a retirement celebration party happened at Walt Disney Imagineering in honor of legendary WDI Imagineer Marty Sklar.

Marty Sklar was a student at UCLA and editor of its Daily Bruin newspaper in 1955 when he was recruited to create an 1890s-themed newspaper, The Disneyland News, a month before the theme park opened. After graduating, he joined Disneyland full-time in 1956.
In 1961, he moved to WED Enterprises, renamed in 1986 to Walt Disney Imagineering, where he worked on attractions for the 1964 New York World's Fair. Among the attractions he helped to design during this period were The Enchanted Tiki Room and It's a Small World, the latter originally for the World's Fair. For nearly 10 years, he wrote personal materials for Walt Disney for use in publications, television and special films. In 1974 he became vice president of concepts/planning, and guided the creative development of EPCOT Center.

As vice president of creative development, executive vice president and then president of Imagineering for nine years, Sklar supervised the design and construction of Tokyo Disneyland, the Disney-MGM Studios, Disneyland Paris, Disney's Animal Kingdom, Disney's California Adventure, Tokyo DisneySea, the Walt Disney Studios Park and most recently Hong Kong Disneyland. As former Disneyland International chairman Jim Cora later said of him, "He understands the Disney way because he learned it at Walt's knee. He is the keeper of the keys, the conscience, the Jiminy Cricket for the organization".

So, after 54 years at the WDC and 48 at WDI Marty Sklar is leaving Imagineering, and to celebrate the retirement of this legendary imagineer the invitation below was sent last week to WDI imagineers - including former WDI imagineers - to invite them to join the party at WDI Big D Patio.

When they arrived on thursday afternoon, the patio was transformed in "Martyland" as you can see on the pictures below and the one at the top - the man in the vehicle is a Dummy!

...And each of them received this now highly-collectible Martyland button you can see below.

Many talented and wonderful people were there! Among them: Alice Davis, Rolly Crump, Richard Sherman, Mickey Steinberg, Orlando Ferrante and his wife, Walt Peregoy, Julie Svendsen, Tony Baxter, Eric Jacobson, Eddie Sotto, Tom Morris, Bob Weis, Barbara Hastings (Marty's assistant for many years), Dave Smith, Dave Snyder, Nelson Meacham, Frank Armitage and his wife Karen and Nicole Armitage his daughter, Valerie Edwards, Kim Irvine, Craig Russell, Bruce Vaughn, Robert and Lori Coltrin, Stan Dodd, Kathy Mangum, Chris Runco, Greg Wilzbach, Paul Comstock, Dick Cook, Steve Anderson, and many more.

And of course Marty Sklar, on the picture below. The lady on the right of Marty is WDI Imagineer Kim Irvine.

Here are Imagineers Chris Runco, Bob Gurr and Tony Baxter!

On the next picture, Richard Sherman, one of the two famous Sherman Brothers. He serenaded Marty Sklar from a piano and played Great big beautiful tomorrow, and other songs "live".

Below, Imagineer Dex Tanksley having a drink with other friends Imagineers in a former Peoplemover vehicle, listening to Richard Sherman playing piano.

As you can see, it seems that everybody had a lot of fun at Marty's party.

Former Imagineer Hani El-Masri now living in Cairo could not attend the party, but Marty Sklar asked Hani to design his "departure card" - as Hani when he was working at WDI was known to design fun cards to celebrate an imagineer retirement from WDI. Hani, that D&M readers knows well thanks to last December articles about his WDI artwork - kindly sent me a picture of the fantastic and very funny card he designed for Marty, and you can see it below.

During the party, a giant print of Hani's artwork was displayed in the patio and all Imagineers could write on the white space all around it kind messages to Marty Sklar.

Marty Sklar, who became a Disney Legend in 2002 at a ceremony inside the Art of Animation building during Paris Walt Disney Studios Grand Opening was also honored this friday, date of Disneyland 54th Anniversary, with his very own window on Main Street at Disneyland, Anaheim.

Here is the video of the Disneyland ceremony for Marty's window.

It's truly a Walt Disney Imagineering legend who retired yesterday and Disney and more wish absolutely all the best to Marty for his new life.

An important message to you, dear Disney and more readers

Before you go further and read below the two tributes to two legendary men - Walter Cronkite, CBS anchorman and the great voice of Spaceship Earth, and Disney Legend Marty Sklar leaving WDI after 54 years of a great Disney career, i would like to bring answer to some questions that some of you have about the new Disney and more blogs.

First, it's not "new" blogs. Although they indeed have a specific url adress, i use them only as "subsections" of the main site. So you don't have to feel lost in all this. The D&M "Artwork" and "Movies" sections are just like in any normal web site when you click on a button which sends you to another part of the web site.

The reason why i created these new blogs is because with Blogger it's not possible to have a different design on each section, except if you create a new blog that you use as a sub-section as i do. The url adress is different but as i've said don't worry about that.
ALL future articles will always be posted on D&M main blog, the one you're reading now, but the "full" articles may be on the specific section - like yesterday's article about Disneyland or the one coming tomorrow. All you may have to do will be to click on the "full article after the jump" link to be redirected on the section page, which is not that difficult, is it? This simple click is a very small price to pay - i think - to have a better and more enjoyable D&M design. If you have other questions, feel free to ask me in the comments, i will answer them.

Walter Cronkite, famous CBS anchorman and "voice" of Spaceship Earth died yesterday

He was the other most famous "Walt" of America. CBS evening news anchorman legend Walter Cronkite died yesterday in his New York home. Called "the most trusted man in America" millions of americans watched him every evening from 1962 to 1981. Cronkite is vividly remembered by many Americans for breaking the news of the death of President Kennedy or his coverage of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing mission among many others great reports.

But for Disney fans he will be forever the great "voice" of Epcot's Spaceship Earth.
Until 1994 the commentary voice that visitors of Epcot's iconic attraction could heard during the ride was the voice of Walter Cronkite - before he was replaced by the voice of Jeremy Irons. On Youtube, nwothunder had the good idea to upload yesterdazy the video of the "Walter Cronkite Spaceship Earth" version and you'll be able to see it below...and hear one last time Cronkite's great voice of this beloved attraction.

President Obama said yesterday in a statement "Walter was always more than just an anchor. He was someone we could trust to guide us through the most important issues of the day; a voice of certainty in an uncertain world".

Many thanks to nwothunder for the Spaceship Earth video!

Disneyland celebrates its 54th anniversary......and Disney and more introduces the new " Movies " section !

Yes, it's already Disneyland 54th anniversary - and next year the 55th! Incredible, isn't it? To celebrate this event i've embedded for you the fantastic "Disneyland U.S.A" documentary filmed in the late 50's.

Why fantastic? Well, first, it's incredibly well filmed - and in glorious Cinemascope! The Cinemascope format was brand new at that time, and it's interesting to see how each frame of the movie have been thought to take as much as possible advantage of this new wide format. Sometime it almost reminds me the Cinerama movies which will be introduce some years later.

If you have never seen it don't miss it as it's also a unique chance to see how Disneyland looks like 50 years ago. In fact, truth is that it's not a documentary but a real time machine!

And all this leads me to the second news of the day, the new Disney and more Movies section! What? Another new Disney and more design again? Yep, last week you've discovered the design of the Disney and more "Artwork" section and this week, on Disneyland 54th birthday, i introduce the new "Movies" section.

On Disney and more Movies you will find the "Movies and Animation" articles and in the future all the "movies" articles previously posted on Disney and more. Enjoy this new "Movies and Animation" section, all in dark blue and gold colours. Gold like all the Academy Awards that Walt Disney Animation Studios won in more than 70 years!

And now, to comeback to today's main celebration, Disneyland 54th Anniversary and this not-to-be-missed documentary, jump on Disney and more Movies where "Disneyland U.S.A" awaits you for your private screening!

Blue Sky Cellar "World of Color" Artwork Video

The new Blue sky cellar is now open at Disney's California adventure with plenty of new "World of Color" artwork as well as new models. World of Color will combine hundreds of magnificent fountains, dazzling colors and an all-new kaleidoscope of audio and visual effects to take water-infused entertainment to a new level of artistry. The production will flood the senses, taking audiences on an imaginative journey into the colorful worlds of animated Disney classics such as Alice in Wonderland, The Lion King and Pocahontas, along with Disney•Pixar films Toy Story, WALL-E and many more.

A video presentation is shown inside to show Guests what they can expect from World of Color and the other offerings coming to Disney's California Adventure in the next several years, and the always excellent MintCrocodile had the good idea to film it, here it is.

And, talking about World of Color, Disneyland also posted on Youtube a great behind the scenes video of the works in DCA's lagoon!

You can also see lot of pictures of this new artwork on Mice Chat.

Disneyland's Splash Mountain celebrates its 20th Anniversary

It's Disneyland 54th Birthday today, but it's also Splash Mountain 20th Anniversary! This Tony Baxter attraction opened officially on July 17, 1989 and was at the time it was built one of the most expensive projects created by Walt Disney Imagineering - $75 million.

Disneyland guests loved it from the first day and other versions were built in WDW and TDL - but unfortunately not at DLP.

To celebrate this 20th anniversary i wish i'll have more things, but at least the picture above is a real nice one, a beautiful high-res picture of the attraction. Enjoy it!

Weird Al "Skipper Dan" video clip is all about being a Jungle Cruise skipper

Weird Al, the American singer-songwriter, music producer, actor, comedian, and satirist known in particular for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture have released a new video clip, and it's all about a Jungle Cruise skipper - the song is called "Skipper Dan" a Jungle Cruise skipper who dream to be an actor on Broadway instead to be an "actor" on the Jungle Cruise ride who repeat and repeat and repeat the same story all day long.

It's all animation and it's really nice - in fact, the colours and the style reminds me a lot of SHAG's style. Have a look at it till the very end, i'm sure you will enjoy it!

And, talking about Jungle Cruise skipper the best example that you can work on the ride - and get out of it and do great things - is......John Lasseter who, as we know, began his "Disney" career as a Jungle Cruise skipper!

You can now see the video on Youtube HERE

Hat Tip to The Disney Blog who was the first to let us know about this nice video.
