D&M Innoventions : Mission : Space !

D&M Innoventions series are each week-end on Disney and more and the goal is to introduce some amazing technologies. If you like Epcot, Audio-animatronics or Disneyland Innoventions, then this article is for you!

Today the theme is outer space and this first video will delight those of you interested by Audio-animatronics. Using leading edge control, sensor and vision technologies, NASA and GM engineers and scientists came together at NASA Johnson Space Center to build a new dexterous humanoid robot - Robonaut2, or R2 for short - capable of working side by side with people or assisting NASA astronauts on dangerous space missions!

I know you've all seen a Space Shuttle launch but space shuttle Endeavour lift-off that happened last February 8 was absolutely awesome. There is only four more Space Shuttle missions and may be this one was the last launch at night. Definitely watch the video in full screen mode and i guarantee you a big WOW! All engines running!

While we are above the Earth, let's stay there a little bit and let's have a look to this new Google's Liquid Galaxy invented by engineer Jason Holt. With Google's Liquid Galaxy the user have a wraparound view of 8 LCD screens providing a incredibly immersive experience of Google Earth.

And, talking about Space Shuttle launch i have a last surprise for you: a perfect video of Epcot's Mission Space filmed by MickeyEars.com. If you've never ride the Epcot attraction the video below will show you everything and put you at the center of the action, just like if you were there, including queue decor, pre-show and the full ride "mission"! Enjoy!

Disney and more Time machine - Back in time to October 27, 1966 : The Epcot that never was

On October 27, 1966, two months before his death, Walt Disney recorded his last TV presentation. To the american audience he was introducing his vision of Epcot, the "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow".
So, today, let's go back in time with pictures, concept arts and the video of the original TV show to have a look at this Epcot who, as we know, finally never was.

Here is Walt recording his last show, his obvious excitement about his new project is "pure Walt".

Walt began by showing the audience a Florida map...

And then came the famous shot on the Disney World project map...

Here is a concept art of Epcot as Walt's envisioned it, with a cosmopolitan hotel in its center. Click on each picture to see them in bigger size.

And here are two others, including one of Epcot's city at night.

Located beneath the hotel, the transportation lobby was fantastic. Different kind of transportation would have been possible, with a choice between the monorail or the famous WEDway people mover.

Inside the indoor international shopping area guests would have found food experience, shows and items from many countries - the World Showcase, on a certain point of view is coming from this original concept.

The Industrial complex was a place where Disney staff would have work with individual corporations to create a showcase of industry.

Here is a last view of the center of Walt's vision of Epcot.
If you want to know much more about this fantastic project , i strongly suggest you to discover the great Waltopia web site where some of these renderings and pictures are coming from.
It's one of the best site i've seen about Walt's original vision of Epcot, and it is full of documents about it.

And now it's time to watch the 1966 video where Walt himself will explain to you his vision of this "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow". It's in three parts and it last 26 minutes. The movie begin by some shots of Disneyland, but don't worry, it is the right one and Walt will appear soon.

Of course, if don't have it yet i strngly recommand to you the Imagineering field guide to Epcot.

Walter Cronkite, famous CBS anchorman and "voice" of Spaceship Earth died yesterday

He was the other most famous "Walt" of America. CBS evening news anchorman legend Walter Cronkite died yesterday in his New York home. Called "the most trusted man in America" millions of americans watched him every evening from 1962 to 1981. Cronkite is vividly remembered by many Americans for breaking the news of the death of President Kennedy or his coverage of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing mission among many others great reports.

But for Disney fans he will be forever the great "voice" of Epcot's Spaceship Earth.
Until 1994 the commentary voice that visitors of Epcot's iconic attraction could heard during the ride was the voice of Walter Cronkite - before he was replaced by the voice of Jeremy Irons. On Youtube, nwothunder had the good idea to upload yesterdazy the video of the "Walter Cronkite Spaceship Earth" version and you'll be able to see it below...and hear one last time Cronkite's great voice of this beloved attraction.

President Obama said yesterday in a statement "Walter was always more than just an anchor. He was someone we could trust to guide us through the most important issues of the day; a voice of certainty in an uncertain world".

Many thanks to nwothunder for the Spaceship Earth video!

Did Walt Disney Imagineering planned to build an Epcot center AND a monorail at Disneyland Paris ?

If you ask almost anyone working at DLP, they will probaly tell you that, no, the addition of a monorail or an Epcot theme park was never planned for the Disney Paris resort. Never.

Hmmm...may be, but every DLP fan knows that the land for a third theme park exist in front of the Newport Bay and Sequoia Lodge Hotels. In the last 15 years, nothing was built on it, and nothing will be, except, precisely, a third theme park or, eventually, the famous "Lava Lagoon" water park.

Except that ONE rendering exist, a very rare one, in fact the only one that i ever saw showing both a monorail AND an Epcot "Spaceship Earth" icon.

If you look well at the artwork, you will see the facade of the Newport Bay Hotel, and in the background the one of the Disneyland Paris Hotel. But the silver silhouette of the Epcot icon is located exactly in that piece of land i was talking about, in front of the Newport Bay.

So, may be DLP will never have for real an Epcot theme park, and even more certainly no monorail, but one thing is sure: somebody at WDI, many years ago, did think about it.

I want to thank the excellent Webcot web site who gently provided me the artwork for this article.

The 21st Century Started in 1982 !

You may not have noticed it , but the 21st century didn't began 7 years ago, but in 1982......well, if you believe this opening musical video released in 1982 for the opening of........Epcot!

Have a look at it, not only it's full of shots of the making of Epcot, but everything is fun and great: the song - it's the great Danny Kaye who is singing - the music, typically "Broadway" style , the energy that comes out of it is more than optimistic, etc..! If you're not feeling well this morning, i can guarantee you that the optimism that comes out of it will give you a lot of energy!
