DLP Announced an Emergency Meeting For Tomorrow Monday at 7 am - What's Happening, and How It All Began

Bad news from Disneyland Paris as the management announced an emergency meeting of the works council for tomorrow Monday at 7 am. Park attendance continues to erode and the management said that the financial situation is "catastrophic" and as said one sources to the AFP "This meeting does not feel good". This unusual very 7 am morning schedule is also another indication that something important will be announced as it's probably also linked to the opening at 9:00 of the Paris stock exchange. Financial communications taking place in principle outside the operating hours of the stock exchange where a company is listed, to don't create too much disruption for the stock price. Now, what's happening, how we arrive to this situation, and why the problem is probably deeper than we think, that's what i'll try to explain to you now. But, first, don't count on me to speculate on what DLP will announce tomorrow, the meeting will take place in a few hours from now and you'll have the answer by Monday early afternoon, Paris time.

So, even with the opening of the Ratatouille ride - which WDS guests like a lot - the financial situation is considered being catastrophic by DLP management, and although Ratatouille has bring more guests inside the WDS, the same effect might have not happen for the Disneyland park attendance, which would mean that DLP would be back to square one. Let's go back in time now  to see how all this financial mess began.

As we know, the first big mistake was to have built too many hotels at the start, in 1992. Now the hotels attendance is very good at DLP but back in 1992, to open 7 hotels ( counting the Davy Crockett ranch ) with around 6000 rooms at 45 minutes from Paris in a concept - a theme park - which was new for french was considered as pure madness. But Michael Eisner has always been a "wannabe architect" and to hire some of the world's best architect to built all these hotels was apparently a way for him to make his own dream come true through real architects. Unfortunately all these had a maintenance cost who started to put in red the DLP financial results. Then arrived as DLP CEO Philippe Bourguignon and the opening of Space Mountain as well as three others attractions the year before, and Space Mountain boosted park's attendance, which was fine.... but not enough some years later.

Then it was decided to build and open in 2002 DLP second gate, the Walt Disney Studios, and here came the second big mistake, with the opening of a park so small and so disappointing for guests coming from such a wonder that is Disneyland Paris park next door that even someone blind would have seen the difference. Here, too, we have to thanks again - ironically - Michael Eisner who, always WDC CEO at that time, decided to don't put the necessary amount of money to make the WDS a decent park from day one. Instead, we had the biggest mistake in Disney theme parks history, even if all WDI Imagineers did their very best with the ( small ) budget they had at their disposal.

The situation got a bit better with DLP 15th anniversary and in 2008 the WDS Tower of Terror opened with the hope it'll have the same attendance effect that Space Mountain did for the first park in 2005. It did quite well, but a third fatal mistake was also done by building the TOT where it is now, instead to built it at the end of a kind of "Sunset Blvd" like they did in Florida, as a master plan from WDI Imagineers suggested it. Why was it a mistake? Not only because the building is so big that you have it "on the nose" when you exit Studio 1, but also because putting the TOT there - officially because the water table was low enough at this location - ruined the possibility to have a decent master plan for the WDS. Now, it's screwed forever, meaning that the possibility to have a park as nice and well thought as DLP first gate will never happen. Sure, they can do a big placemaking and create a Marvel land in Backlot but this won't change the global bad design of the park.

The WDS Tower of Terror Grand Opening in 2008.

By that time, in 2008, the financial situation of DLP was always chaotic and we had to wait five more years to see the WDC finally doing what should have been done since a long time, i.e to give to DLP the money to end its insane debt to the banks. In the meantime Bob Iger did the right thing for Disney's California Adventure - okay, there was no other choice than to do the huge DCA platemaking but he did it - and for Hong Kong Disneyland - where also there was no other choice as there was no way to have a successful park in Shanghaî if the Disney Parks image was not restored previously in Hong Kong - in addition to the fact that HKLD really needed the new additions. As we know, DCA, HKDL and WDS mistakes happened at the end of Michael Eisner reign and Iger had to pay a phenomenal price to resolve them. But, even with the 1.332 billion euros that the WDC gave to DLP to refinance the bank debt  ( now DLP owes the money to the WDC instead to the banks ) and all the WDC "credit lines" to finance Ratatouille, the financial problem remains critical. The WDC is now in this situation where they've spent probably the same amount of money than they did to make DCA the beautiful park it is now, but without changing or adding nothing in DLP parks. In two words, the 1.332 Billion euros surely helped to stop the insane cost of DLP banks debt but they must spend now probably the same amount of money to finally really start to resolve the problems in the two parks, do a huge WDS pacemaking, add new rides and attractions in both parks, etc...

Because DCA and HKDL placemakings were a priority DLP "had to wait", then came Shanghaî Disneyland - Bob Iger legacy - which is a priority and also have a huge cost, and i don't mention others costs that the WDC had to pay recently like the crazy My Magic + at WDW. You'll tell me: "Good, now may be able they'll finally do for DLP what they did for DCA or HKDL". Yes, but the task now is going to be even harder, as something else happened at DLP, and it won't be because of the global economy crisis even if Europe economy is not going well.

What happened is something that even money can't buy to make it better, and it's all about Disneyland Paris brand mental image. While DLP had to wait that the time will come to have the WDC helping the park, they still had the financial situation to resolve. And what they did is to raise prices - i was stunned last year when i heard the hotel prices - in the hope to have a class of guests that will spend more in parks and hotels. But at the same time, restaurants were closed regularly in the park, the food quality although not bad is the shadow of what it was years ago, shows at Videopolis or Chaparral Stage are now closed and even rides and attractions were opening late or closing early to save money on cast-members costs.

The park finally launched a welcome seasonal events which bring back entertainment life in the park and although philippe Gas was not perfect - who is? - two E-Ticket opened when he was there, Ratatouille recently and the great E-Ticket show Disney Dreams for the 20th Anniversary. But all the other savings had an effect on the guests, DLP wasn't anymore as magical as it was, and even the most hardcore fans will tell you how they are disappointed by all this and the park condition. The result is something devastating for any brand, i.e the mental image that people have of it is collapsing. And once it's down, you need not only a huge amount of money but literally years to change it again in the mind of people. A good friend of mine, Disney theme parks fan since decades decided months ago to don't renew his AP membership, so outraged he was by all what i just explained. And he's not the only one, i'm afraid. Add to this that DLP is 35 km from Paris, certainly one of the most beautiful city in the world, but also a city where parisians, as defined by foreign correspondants, can be incredibly posh, and you'll understand why i heard recently people in Paris saying that Disneyland Paris was now like something "out of the ark". When you remember the hype and how excited people were to go at DLP, it hurts to hear that, and you know that something deeper has changed in the minds. Before, when DLP was opening a new ride it was "let's go next week-end to ride it!". Now it's "who cares?". Not for DLP fans, of course, but real DLP fans are not more than 100.000 probably, and although they spend money in the parks it's not them who counts for DLP management, it's the regular guests who decide to spend their week-ends here or there. And with high prices and no new rides each year, the mental image they have of the park finally changed.

And here is why this question of brand mental image is so important: If someone asked you what is "ruling" the world, some might answer: "money", may be others would say "the U.S",  but the right answer is neither this one or the other. What is REALLY ruling the world - of human beings, of course - is something that should be learned at school from age 5, and it is: mental images. Or, if you prefer, human beings created and are ruling money, and mental images are ruling human beings. Some of you may think that a human beings are creating themselves these mental images, but i'm sorry to say that it's more complicated than that and i could explain you why in details, but it'll be too long.

Now, think about it: why are you waking up in the morning to go working? Well, because it's time to go to work, you say. Sure, but how does it happen? What is in fact happening, after a long night of sleep and dream is that each of us wake up slowly, and suddenly, during this time when we are in between being awake and asleep, an image pop-up in your mind and you silently think "damn', got to wake up and go working". And it's the same for any project you'll have which always start with a mental image in your mind. Or for your next trip in a country where you've never been before - simply because you have a good mental image of the country - often romantic - and what we secretly hope is that the reality of the country where we've always dream to go will match the mental image that we have in mind. And the list could go on and on for anything we're doing or what's happening in our lives. Even when you're jealous of someone, when in fact it's a storm of mental images that took the control of your mind and drive you crazy. Mental images are ruling our lives and are at the start of anything that we do and that's why being conscious of the ones who are driving you is so important, because of the consequences they will have - remember how Michael Eisner and is "wannabe" architect dream started all this mess.

And also because, as the Hindus are always saying, because "everything is illusion". The best way probably to define reality is that everything is at the same time real AND an illusion. But this is something which can't be understood "intellectually", you need to understand it physically, to have an insight for a perfectly clear vision of it. And by the way, Disneyland is a good example. Why do we love so much Disney theme parks? Because they give us the illusion that what we are living is true - whether you're travelling through space in Space Mountain or explore a lost temple in Indiana Jones Adventure, or travel through galaxies in Star Tours, etc... when it's just a fantastic illusion created wonderfully by WDI Imagineers. Disneyland is at the same time real and an illusion. But for a few hours you believe that reality is different than what it is until ,of course, you come back to the parking lot and drive back to your home.

Let's come back now to Disneyland Paris as you probably understood now why this question of mental image that people have of DLP is so important. Whatever is announced tomorrow it will take not only time and money but also some brilliant minds to change this, as for sure the task will be harder than for DCA or HKDL.

Bob Iger Wants a Disney's Frozen Musical Show

Bob Iger is very proud of Frozen and the tremendous success for Walt Disney Animation. So far Frozen has grossed $669M and it hasn't opened yet in China and Japan where for sure it will be too very successful. As Iger says in a Fortune interview "Frozen has restored our mojo", and certainly the one of WDA.

Now, we already know this rumor saying that a Frozen ride will replace Epcot Norway's pavilion attraction "Maelstrom" anytime soon, but now we learn that Disney also wants to create a Broadway musical with Frozen. With all the songs included in Frozen and its great script there is for sure a great musical to create out of Frozen and Bob Iger confirms in Fortune that Disney is in discussions to develop a show, though there is no set time frame. "We're not demanding speed" says Iger, "We're demanding excellence".

So, you might have to wait a bit before a Broadway Premiere but my feeling is that a show will come sooner or later. After all when you see decors like the one above showing the Ice Palace it sure will make a nice musical set, wouldn't it? The only question is: will the temperature of the theatre itself be "frozen"?  :-)

It's Official : Bob Iger Announces Star Wars Lands Coming at Disneyland AND Walt Disney World , and Likely in Parks Outside the U.S ...

It was hardly a secret but now it's official as Bob Iger in an interview with Bloomberg confirmed that "there is a fair amount of development going on at Disney Imagineering right now to expand the Star Wars presence ( translate:  Star Wars Lands ) in  Disneyland AND Walt Disney World ( translate: Disney's Hollywood Studios ) and eventually in others Disney theme parks around the world".

"We do have Star Wars in others theme parks, in Paris and in Tokyo, we haven't made any specific announcements about what will be in Shanghaî or what we're heading to Hong Kong after we build an Iron Man attraction but i think it's probably likely that Star Wars will be in more than just our two domestic parks."

Couldn't be more clear, right? Now, Disney still have to announce the opening dates of these Star Wars lands at DL and WDW but what i can tell you is that Disneyland will be probably the first to have one, shortly followed by the awaited one for WDW Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Iger also talked about the release date of Star Wars Episode 7 movie - December 18, 2015 - which happen to be the release date of Avatar who became the most successful movie of all time and hopefully Episode 7 will be as successful.

Check out the full interview in the video below!

Bob Iger Will Step Down as Disney CEO in 2015

That's a breaking news, and it's announced by the Wall Street Journal, a reliable source:

Disney CEO Robert Iger to Step Down as CEO in 2015

Walt Disney Co. said Chief Executive Robert Iger will step down as CEO in 2015.

Mr. Iger, 60 years old, will add the additional title of chairman of the board in March 2012, and will remain executive chairman until June 2016, at which time he is to retire from Disney at the age of 65.

The company said a successor had not been chosen. But Mr. Iger for several years has been grooming a group of potential heirs, moving senior managers between jobs to broaden their experience and to help assess which among them has the right combination of skills for the top job.

Disney's current chairman, John Pepper, is to step down at the company's annual meeting in March 2012. Mr. Iger's current contract was to expire in January 2013. Under the new contract, he is to receive an annual base salary of $2.5 million. The target bonus is set at $12 million during the years he has both titles, contingent on the company's operating performance and share price. Once he is executive chairman, his salary is to remain the same, while his bonus target is to be $6 million".

You can read the whole WSJ article HERE.

However, Disney’s also did a press release today which indicates that Iger might stay until 2016: "The Walt Disney Company Board of Directors announced today it has agreed to extend Robert A. Iger’s contract through June 2016 as part of the Company’s ongoing succession planning".

Here is Disney’s full press release:

BURBANK, Calif., October 7, 2011 – The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) Board of Directors announced today it has agreed to extend Robert A. Iger’s contract through June 2016 as part of the Company’s ongoing succession planning.

Under the new agreement, effective Oct. 1, Iger will assume the role of chairman in addition to chief executive officer following Chairman John E. Pepper’s retirement from the board at Disney’s 2012 annual shareholder meeting in March. Until then, Iger will remain president and chief executive officer.

Iger will hold the positions of chairman and chief executive officer through March 31, 2015, at which time a new CEO would be named; Iger will thereafter serve as executive chairman for 15 months through June 30, 2016. Iger’s current contract was set to expire on Jan. 31, 2013.

The Disney board took action at this time to secure the benefit of Iger’s leadership through 2016, provide for an effective, seamless succession and management transition and a continuity of the company’s corporate strategy to create long-term value for shareholders.

As provided in the company’s corporate governance guidelines, the board will also select an independent lead director when Iger assumes the role of Chair immediately following the meeting in March.

“As one of the most iconic brands and preeminent companies in the world, The Walt Disney Company requires a leader with the proven ability to drive creative and financial success in a dynamic world. For more than six years, Bob Iger has proven he has that ability at the highest level,” said Mr. Pepper. “The Board is delighted that the company has been able to secure the longer-term continuation of Bob’s unique blend of experience and leadership skills. His ability to bring together the many parts of Disney’s business against a clear and proven strategy, while instilling a culture of innovation, collaboration and discipline, will continue to serve the long-term interests of shareholders.”

Pepper added: “It is for these reasons – continuing the strategic direction and growth of the company while ensuring a smooth transition process to the next generation of leadership – the Board has determined that Bob should assume the additional role of Chairman.”

Iger said: “No CEO could have a better counselor than John — his impeccable integrity, vast experience, and knowledge and appreciation of Disney have been invaluable. I want to thank him for his many contributions, and his support of our people and our strategy including two of the company’s most significant acquisitions in recent years – Pixar and Marvel.”

“I’m privileged and grateful to lead The Walt Disney Company and our talented, dedicated team at this exciting time,” Iger added. “I’m committed to increasing long-term value for shareholders and am confident we will continue to do so through the successful execution of our core strategic priorities: the creation of high quality, branded content and experiences, the use of technology, and creating growth in numerous and exciting international markets.”

Since being named president and chief executive on September 30th, 2005, Iger, 60, has led the Company to record operating results while positioning Disney for the future in the global, dynamic multi-media industry. Disney’s total shareholder return since October 1, 2005 is five times higher than that of the S&P 500.

During Iger’s leadership tenure, The Walt Disney Company has been recognized as one of “America’s Most Admired Companies” by Fortune magazine (2009, 2010, 2011); one of the “World’s Most Respected Companies” by Barron’s (2009, 2010); and one of the “Best Places to Launch a Career” by BusinessWeek magazine (2006-2010).

As part of the agreement, Iger’s annual base salary will be $2.5 million. Iger is not receiving any up front equity award in connection with signing the new agreement. His annual bonus award will be calculated based on the Company’s performance, including its operating income, return on invested capital, earnings per share and after-tax free cash flow. He will also be entitled to an annual long-term equity incentive award of options and restricted stock units, the ultimate value of which will be entirely dependent on the Company’s future financial performance.

Bob Iger in India at "Kingdom of Dreams"

Guess what? Yesterday's article was about Disney's expansion plans in India and today i just read a Hindustan Times article revealing the visit of Bob Iger two weeks ago at "Kingdom of Dreams", in India! "In a secret yet high-profile visit, Walt Disney president and chief executive officer Robert A Iger escorted by about a dozen private bodyguards (!), spent more than two hours at the Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon on Tuesday. The hush-hush affair gave rise to speculation whether Gurgaon will be the next destination to house a Disneyland."

And what is this "Kingdom of Dreams", you ask? Well, it seems that Kingdom of Dreams is not really a theme park with rides, etc... but more a great entertainment and dining experience. According to the official description it is "The ultimate entertainment and leisure destination, sprawling across acres of land, ideally located at the apex of the golden triangle of Jaipur, Agra and Delhi, is the magnificent Kingdom of Dreams. Here, the carnival that is India is distilled into one iconic destination. This fabulous Kingdom brings to life a blend of India's art, culture, heritage, craft, cuisine and performing art...all with the technological wizardry of today. Nautanki Mahal: showcasing an extravagant cinematic and theatrical musical. Culture Gully: an elaborate culture, arts, crafts and food boulevard. Showshaa Theatre: a fabulous, colourful drama marquee spotlighting Indian mythology productions, a mock wedding show and the great Indian talent circus. iifa Buzz: a glamorous Bollywood themed cafe. This is a destination in itself which is capturing the imagination of the world. Get ready for this century's most novel tourist destination: Kingdom of Dreams."

Oh-oh, that looks interesting isn't it? And if Iger took the time to do a 16 hours flight to India to visit this Kingdom of Dreams there must be a good reason, right? So, let's have a closer look to it, with some videos. The first one below is the official "trailer".

Kingdom of Dreams also include India's biggest bollywood musical on stage live called "Zangoora The Gypsy Prince" inside the Nautanki Mahal, a 848-seat auditorium within the Kingdom of Dreams complex, with a facade designed like a palace. And as you will see on the video it seems to be an impressive show.

Apparently Iger "took a round of the site and saw rehearsals of the musical 'Jhumroo' in the Nautanki Mahal. Officials also explained to him the backstage technology used during performances. Iger also visited Cultural Gully and was particularly impressed with the theme-based restaurants offering culinary delicacies of various Indian states".

Here is a short video showing Cultural Gully, an air-conditioned boulevard spread across 90,000 square feet, with theme restaurants from 14 states of India, housed in representative architecture and decor.

The Hindustan Times article also says that "The purpose of Iger visit is still not clear and this has sparked several speculations that range from his plans to set up a Disneyland in Gurgaon or taking the Kingdom of Dreams concept to other countries such as the US, UK, Australia and China. The promoters of the Gurgaon facility had earlier hinted at massive expansion plans. It is also rumoured that Walt Disney might be interested in acquiring a stake in Kingdom of Dreams and further developing the project".

Two "direct" news in less than one week about Disney in India means necessarily something and, again, i don't think that Iger would have done that long trip if he didn't had something in his mind. May be he wanted to learn more about Indian culture which, as i've said in yesterday's article, would be a smart move but one thing is sure this is not the end of the "Disney in India" story and just like you i'm curious to know the next episode.

You can read the full article HERE and also have a look to Kingdom of Dreams official site HERE.

Shanghaî Disneyland Groundbreaking Event Video !

Here is a great video showing yesterday's Shanghaî Disneyland groundbreaking event - in english and with french subtitles thanks to Disney Magic Interactive forum. In addition you'll find above the official Shanghaî Disney Resort logo. If you've not read it yet, don't miss my full report about yesterday's event with SDL artwork and pictures HERE.

The next video coming from a chinese TV channel is for my chinese readers. It's all in chinese language with no english subtitles and you'll see also in it some shots of HKDL as well as this SDL map.

Shanghaî Disneyland Groundbreaking Event !

Editor's Note: Apparently Photobucket is doing some maintenance and the D&M pictures will be back soon. Good news: you don't have to wait for their return to read today's article about SDL HERE as it doesn't include pictures!

That's the day we were waiting for: the Shanghaî Disneyland groundbreaking ceremony happened this morning and here is a full report about it! Disney also released new Shanghaî Disneyland concept-arts - you can see the castle above - and we will have a closer look at them. But first, pictures and videos of this historical moment!

Bob Iger, tom staggs, Shanghaî mayor, a lot of chinese officials and Disney characters were there for this groundbreaking event!

Before we look at the SDL artwork, here is the official press release. Among the important informations, the now official name of the park is Shanghaî Disneyland - and not Disneyland Shanghaî - the SDL resort will open in approximately five years and the castle will be the first "interactive castle" that Disney has ever built.

DISNEY AND PARTNERS BREAK GROUND ON SHANGHAI DISNEY RESORT

First Disney theme park to be built in mainland China

SHANGHAI (April 8, 2011) - The Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group, its joint venture partner in China, have broken ground on the Shanghai Disney Resort following approval from the Chinese central government in Beijing. Both companies marked the start of construction on the first Disney resort in mainland China at a groundbreaking ceremony held earlier today.

"Today marks a significant milestone in the history of The Walt Disney Company," said Robert A. Iger, President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. "Our Shanghai resort will be a world-class family vacation destination that combines classic Disney characters and storytelling with the uniqueness and beauty of China. Working with our Chinese partners, the Shanghai Disney Resort will be both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese."

"We're incredibly excited to build a Disney resort in Shanghai, one of the world's most vibrant cities," said Thomas O. Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "We are hard at work designing Shanghai Disneyland, which when complete will be a special place where guests of all ages will discover a world of imagination, creativity, adventure and thrills."

Today's groundbreaking ceremony paid homage to the culture and people of China. Traditional Chinese drum music, a female soloist singing in Mandarin, a 50-voice Shanghai children's choir and Mickey Mouse dressed in a traditional Chinese costume were on hand to mark this special occasion. Following the entertainment and remarks, Iger and Staggs were joined by Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng and Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng to officially break ground on the project.

The new Shanghai Disney Resort is slated to open in approximately five years.

The Shanghai Disney Resort will be home to Shanghai Disneyland, a Magic Kingdom-style park that will blend classic Disney storytelling and characters with all-new attractions and experiences tailored specifically for the people of China. The park will feature several themed lands complete with exciting, iconic Disney attractions and experiences. At the heart of the park will be an interactive Disney castle that is truly an attraction unto itself with entertainment, dining and performance experiences that will be unique to Shanghai Disneyland. The park will also contain other large-scale entertainment venues, indoor and out, that can be used for various purposes throughout the year.

A beautiful, 11 acre (46,130 square meter) green space at the center of the theme park will differentiate Shanghai Disneyland and reinforce the themes of sustainability and nature that will be integrated throughout the park. The space will also be a place where friends and family can enjoy local cultural celebrations and customs together.

On Opening Day, the Shanghai Disney Resort will be located on a 963 acre (3.9 square kilometer) site in Pudong, Shanghai, with additional room to expand in the future. At opening, the resort will include Shanghai Disneyland, two themed hotels, a large retail, dining and entertainment venue, recreational facilities, a lake and associated parking and transportation hubs.

There will be an initial investment in the project of approximately 24.5 billion yuan (US$3.7 billion) to build the theme park and an additional 4.5 billion yuan (US$0.7 billion) to build the other aspects of the resort, including the hotels and the retail, dining and entertainment area. The investment amounts will be split between Disney and the Shanghai Shendi Group with Disney holding 43% of the shares of the owner companies and the Shanghai Shendi Group holding the remaining 57%. Financing will be proportional to ownership. In addition, a joint venture management company will be formed with Disney having a 70% stake and Shanghai Shendi Group having a 30% stake. The management company will be responsible for creating, developing and operating the resort. (end of the press release)

Let's have a look now at the renderings. The one above is a bird eye's view of the park and there is no Main Street at the entrance as Iger confirmed it at a conference after the ceremony: "We decided this park would not begin with a typical main street because we simply believe that a Main Street USA might not be that interesting for people here. So the experience you get when you enter the gates will be quite different".

Bob Iger also said this morning that Shanghaî Disneyland will be "both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese. Our Shanghai resort will be a world-class family vacation destination that combines classic Disney characters and storytelling with the uniqueness and beauty of China". The least we can say is that Iger is right. If we have a closer look at the entrance you'll see that instead of the traditional Main Street SDL guests will find lush 11 acres of green space including water, trees, small chinese pagodas and costumed characters. Obviously WDI Imagineers didn't forgot chinese's love for parks and trees in blossom. This 46,000 square meter green space at the centre of the park is also designed to be a cultural hub and a reminder of "the themes of sustainability and nature that will be integrated throughout the park."

I've tried to enlarge the artwork to see more details and it was not easy as Disney - to avoid that any SDL concepts will be copy before the park opening - has released these artworks in good definition but small size. However, let's have a closer look at the castle first. Surprise! it's not a "chinese" castle but a new version of a european castle, closer to the one at TDL than to a "Mulan" castle.

Also released this morning, this other artwork supposedly showing SDL castle...

...and if this artwork reminds you another one it's may be not a coincidence as Herb Ryman did a long time ago a painting for Tokyo Disneyland who looks really a lot like this one (without Cinderella's coach).

Always about the castle, we saw in the press release that it will be an "interactive" castle - no more details for now about this interactivity - but Iger also revealed that Shanghaî Disneyland castle will be "the largest and tallest "Story Book Castle" of any Disney park".

As we'll see it's such an unusual concept that, at first sight, it will be hard to find any Disney's iconic attractions in it. But at least we can find two classic Disney rides, just in front of the castle. The first one is the Dumbo ride...

...and the other one is the famous Fantasyland Carousel.

We can see nearby others carousels which might be more of a chinese inspiration and the idea to have include classic Fantasyland rides in this huge "green space" area is interesting. But the details about SDL attractions will stop here as it's impossible to identify on the artwork others classic Disney attractions. This is not going to stop us to have a closer look at the different areas and let's begin by the lake, the boats and the pier.

Let's move to Shanghai Disneyland's entrance area.

Water is the other element of Shanghaî DisneylandLand we can see it everywhere as you'll see in these next pictures showing the right part of the park. The dark mountain on the foreground seems to be a water ride with a big drop and you will also notice the building behind with what seems to be giant crystals included in its architecture.

And here is a closer look at the left side of the park. And don't ask me what it is as i have no idea! It could be a kind of Tomorrowland or it could be anything else!

Finally, Disney also launched this morning the new Shanghaî Disney Resort web site! You will find it HERE. No more artwork in it but Tinkerbell is already there! Put it in your bookmarks for the future!

Edited: Don't miss the others video of the groundbreaking event in my new article HERE.

And that's all what we can say in this historical day. Details will come later but one thing is sure: Shanghaî Disneyland works have now began, the park looks big - obviously Disney learned from HKDL "size" mistake - and we can't wait to walk in to discover this very unusual disney theme park!

Disney CEO Bob Iger calls Apple's iPad a "game changer" in digital media

Bob Iger said Tuesday the iPad was a "game changer" that could transform how media companies deliver content to consumers: "We find that the iPad has a lot of potential. We think it's a really compelling device. We think it could be a game changer in terms of enabling us to create essentially new forms of content."

"We've put in the marketplace a digi-books product through our Disney publishing group just recently. We were developing it primarily for the computer screen and we started developing it for iTunes, I should say for the iPhone/iTouch platform, and suddenly this device comes along and provides us with an even more robust technological platform that makes the interactivity that we were going to provide, things like read-alongs, simple animation, music, to just sort of come to life, and that's just one example."

"When you think about ABC, you think about a program like `Lost' and not just being able to watch the program, but all the other things that viewers like to do with that program. ABC News, another great example."

"ESPN ScoreCenter, which is a great app on the iPhone, and provides relatively rudimentary information, scores, basically, suddenly we have an opportunity with a platform where you can really make the scores come to life."

" A Christmas Carol " World Premiere in London

Tonight, the World Premiere of A Christmas Carol happened in London. As a matter of fact, at the time i'm writing this article the Premiere is still going on, but D&M have already all the pictures for you - and they're all in high-res size!

The event was located at the Odeon Leicester square, London's legendary theatre and it loks like London's Leicester Square was back to the Victorian era. Children and performers of all ages were dressed in victorian costumes...

As you can see the Victorian "theming" of the evening was great. On stage, carol singers performed along with Andrea Bocelli, the famous blind singer.

On the red carpet, the cast of A Christmas Carol was there: Jim Carrey, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Director Robert Zemeckis - all with their lovely wives - and Disney CEO Bob Iger was there, too!

Well, it looks that it was a nice evening, wasn't it?

Tomorrow, you'll see why, we will be back in London!

Could Dick Cook's lay off cost Disney 4 BILLION dollars ?

Since last friday Disney denied that Dick Cook was fired. Alas, it seems that nobody really believes that Cook decided by himself to resign from the Walt Disney Studios, "effective immediately". But could the consequences of Dick Cook's lay off finally cost Disney 4 Billion dollars?

Dick Cook was one of the most popular executives at Hollywood, and even more than that, he was loved by a lot of influent directors/actors, and many more. Cook was "a crucial player when it came to persuading Steve Jobs and others to bring Pixar into the Disney fold" and for Steven Spielberg Dick Cook "was a major reason why him and Stacey Snider brought the new DreamWorks to Disney" and Steven seems to be "devastated" by the news of Cook's departure.

Johnny Depp said he was "shocked" because Cook was "a friend inside an insane system" and because the Pirates of Caribbean movies were "all born in Cook's office".
But Johnny had also other words about the next Pirates of Caribbean movie that should ring a bell inside Iger's head: In a phone interview from London Johnny said "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment..." And in a Los Angeles Times interview Depp is "questioning whether he'll want to continue playing his key role in Pirates of the Carribean sequels without Cook heading the studio".

Now, do you have any idea how much money Disney did with the first Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy? Here are the numbers for the "worldwide grosses":
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: $654 M
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End: $961 M
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest: $1.066 B

Total: $2.681 Billion. And this is ONLY for worldwide theatres grosses, it doesn't count all the DVD and Blu-Ray sales AND all the money from POTC merchandise products. I don't have the numbers for these but with them we're probably close to $4 Billion.

According that the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie "On Stranger Tides" - which seems to be an adaptation from Tim Powers book - should be the first episode of a new trilogy, do you understand how devastating it could be for the WDC if Johnny Depp was finally saying "NO" to Pirates of the Caribbean 4th episode (and so to the next trilogy)? That's right: the WDC could say goodbye to the next 4 Billion dollars! And 4 billion dollars is really a lot of money, even for the WDC. In fact, it's exactly the amount that Disney paid one month ago when they acquired Marvel Entertainment!

I know, Johnny was at Dick Cook's D23 Expo presentation a week ago and did a fantastic appearance all dressed in Jack Sparrow - as you can see on the video below from Attractions Magazine - to announce, precisely, "On Stranger Tides". But, you see, may be the contract between Johnny Depp and the WDS is not signed yet... Probably Johnny said that "he will be pleased to play Jack Sparrow again as long as there is a good script and a good director"...but i doubt that the script is already finalised. And as long as there is no final contract, Johnny can do whatever he want. And one thing is sure: Johnny, right now, is very, very, VERY unhappy about Dick Cook's lay off.

Although Johnny love to play Jack Sparrow, he don't really need money and probably have enough now so he can choose to work only with people he like. But he love the Jack Sparrow character, and he love to play it for his children. And Johnny Depp also have a lot of respect for his fans. So all this will probably save the project...but you never know until the contract is signed...

So, is Dick Cook's lay off Bob Iger's first big mistake? Time will tell, but he should pray that Johnny Depp don't decide to "resign, effective immediately" from the next Pirates of Caribbean trilogy. Because, if Johnny does, then yes, Dick Cook lay off will have cost 4 Billion dollars to the Walt Disney Company.

Before we end this article, here is what is probably one of Dick Cook's last interview. Recorded at D23 Expo by Julia Boorstin for CNBC, Cook was explaining his strategy for years to come, and also talk about 3D.

Disney announces D23 , " The Official Community for Disney Fans "

It's the major Disney news of the day - if not of the month: Disney announces today the D23 web site and magazine, "the first official community for Disney fans in the Company's 85-year history. ".

It's hard to believe that it took them 85 years to think about it (!), but that's it, Disney has finally decided to take care of all the Disney fans in the world with a great web site and a classy magazine as well. I can't stop thinking that all the different "non-officials" web sites and magazines like "Tales from the Laughing Place" did "open the road" to Disney D23. That somebody in Burbank finally thought that "may-be-we-should-do-something-for-all-these Disney-fans"...

But, hey, here it is at last, so today should be a zip-a-dee-do-dah day!

Let's have a closer look to all this, beginning by the D23 web site. As Bob Iger will explain to you on the "What is D23" page: "D23 is Named in honor of the year 1923, when Walt left Kansas City, headed for Hollywood and founded what would become the Disney Studios, D23 gives Disney fans VIP access to all things Disney through this brand-new Web site; Disney twenty-three, the club's beautiful quarterly magazine; and, in perhaps the most exciting news of all, the D23 Expo, a Disney fan mega event to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center this fall!
Through D23, fans will go backstage and behind closed doors to get the inside scoop from every part of Disney, while experiencing the nostalgia, adventure and fantasy of Disney as never before.
"

If you still don't believe that all this is is real, here is Bob iger himself in his official announcement.

The web site has different sections, one of them talks about "the latest news and features" with different "Feature Stories" - and you will be pleased to know that an updated "Great moments with Mr Lincoln" will come back to Disneyland later this year...

Other sections of "News and Features" include:
- Late-breaking news, press releases, and photos of interest to fans from every part of Disney.
- "Twilight Bark" — inspired by the Disney animated feature 101 Dalmatians — offers up the latest tidbits and news "bites" from all around the world of Disney.
- Feature articles and interviews on current Disney topics from theme parks and animation to television and motion pictures, as well as historical retrospectives.
- Official Disney Bloggers — Get regular updates on films in production at Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, current Walt Disney Imagineering projects, and the Walt Disney Archives.

Another section dedicated to "Expos and special events" will inform you on how a D23 member can participate to "a special D23 members-only showing of Up, Pixar's latest animation masterpiece!" and you will learn also everything about the first D23 EXPO! The D23 Expo — to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center from September 10-13, 2009 — will be "The Ultimate Disney Fan Experience," featuring incredible speakers, celebrity appearances, breathtaking exhibitions, interactive experiences, sneak peeks, film screenings, one-of-a-kind merchandise, and much more. All Disney fans are welcome, but D23 members will receive a discount on Expo admissions and early access to the show daily. D23 will also offers unique members-only special event opportunities throughout the year.

Talking about members, there is a "Membership Certificate and Card": The D23 membership card and suitable-for-framing member certificate — both specially created for D23's Charter Year — feature many of Disney's most beloved characters.
more interesting, the "Surprise Collectible Gift and Member Merchandise": Each member who joins D23 will receive an exclusive collectible gift from the new Walt Disney Archives Collection. This merchandise line was created specifically with D23 members in mind, and each piece is authorized by the Walt Disney Archives. D23 members will have exclusive or early access to a wide assortment of Walt Disney Archives Collection pieces.
The D23 membership will cost you $74.99 a year. It will also allows you to buy special D23 merchandise on the D23 online store as you will see below.

The Disney Archives section is also very interesting and have its own sections:
- "This Day in Disney" — A daily walk down memory lane.
- "What's Old Is News" — Go back in time and enjoy rare, vintage and classic articles, stories, interviews, press materials and other highlights from deep within the Disney Archives.
- "Ask Dave" — Disney Legend and Chief Archivist Dave Smith answers your questions about Disney history.
- "Archives Library" — helpful Disney reference tools including biographies, filmographies, award chronologies, Disney A to Z updates, historical profiles and other archival information.

And then there is the D23 Magazine, the cherry on the top of the cake, a classy quarterly publication: Disney 23 is a hybrid entertainment and lifestyle magazine that is the all-access pass to discovering the magic of Disney's past, present and future. Its name pays homage to 1923, the year The Walt Disney Company was founded.

The premiere issue of Disney 23 includes exclusive features such as:

- Interviews with Tim Burton, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
- Inside look at the new Disney/Pixar animated film Up, featuring interviews with Director Pete Docter and Producer Jonas Rivera, concept and production art, and a look at the new animated short Partly Cloudy.
- A rare look inside Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California. Meet the Pixar team and learn the secrets behind the success of their films.
- The doors open for two of the most exclusive, magical suites in the world: the Cinderella Castle Suite at Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Dream Suite overlooking New Orleans Square and the Rivers of America at the Disneyland Resort.

Disney twenty-three's regular featured departments will include:

- A Walk with Walt: A look back at the trials and triumphs of the man who made dreams come true and whose imagination started it all.
- D Society: From gala movie premieres and grand openings to candid Disney moments and memories, D Society takes readers backstage and onto the red carpet.
- PHOTOfiles: The legendary Walt Disney Archives Photo Library houses millions of Disney's most cherished photographic memories, and the Archives team shares its Top 100, five in every issue. Let the countdown begin!
- Where in D?: Try to identify where in the world of Disney each issue's mystery photo was taken.
- The Funny Pages: For the first time in decades, enjoy the vintage newspaper comic strips that helped make many of Disney's most popular characters famous.
- Making Magic: Crafts for children of all ages, inspired by Disney's favorite stories and experiences.
- Recipes from Disney's most popular restaurants and eateries, past and present.

Stitch Kingdom posted a review of the first issue, and you can read it HERE.

Finally, Disney created a online D23 shop on the Disney Shopping web site. As i've said you need to be a D23 member to buy those exclusive collectibles. Some are not cheap, but there is nice items like this 12" high sculpture of Walt with his first creation - no, it's not Mickey Mouse but Oswald the rabbit! at $224.95

Let be honest, these D23 web site and magazine are real good news, and even if it took them sometime to create them, we can wish to both site and magazine a warm welcome.......in the community of Disney fans.
