WDW New Fantasyland Construction Video

Here is a great video showing WDW New Fantasyland construction, and including shots of Belle Village, the exterior of the Little Mermaid ride. You'll also see the first tests on the Little Mermaid waterfalls, and more !

WDW Magic Kingdom New Fantasyland is, after DCA Cars Land and Buena Vista Street the next big WDI project in the U.S to open. The double Dumbo ride and the Story Book Circusare already open and the rest should open later this year, except the seven dwarves mine ride. On this next video filmed by DisneyByTheNumbers you'll see the new Casey Jr Splash'n Soak Station as well as the double Dumbo ride and the new interactive - read "playground" - queue.

WDW Magic Kingdom Dumbo "Interactive" Queue Video

Disney Parks just released a short video showing the supposed interactive queue of the new Dumbo attraction at WDW Magic Kingdom Storybook Circus. Interactive? Did i missed something? As you will see in the video below it looks more like a kids playground under a circus tent, with a great theming based on Dumbo final scene, i agree, but still, where are the interactivity elements in all this?

Sure, this indoor "interactive queue" - read: playground - will allow parents to sit on benches in air conditioning while kids " will burn off energy climbing through ropes, jumping, and running around", and considering how long a queue at Dumbo can be it's very welcome, but so far the only interactive element i noticed is a pager which will "bip" when it will be the "time to ride". Again, it's a very good idea which should help to make the Dumbo wait more agreable, but just don't call it "interactive" - or let me know where the interactivity is.

ThemeParkGPS, the first iPhone App that will guide you by GPS inside WDW Magic Kingdom !

Here is a great idea, specially for WDW guests coming for the first time at the Magic Kingdom... or for those of you who definitely don't have the sense of orientation. ThemeParkGPS is, simply, the first ever GPS iPhone App that actually helps you to navigate throughout the Magic Kingdom effortlessly and enjoyably. All you have to do is to follow the icon "Guide Guy" as he shows and tells you how to get from where you are in the Magic Kingdom to anywhere you want to go in the Park.

You know how works GPS for cars? This app works the same way, and the voice-guided, turn-by-turn GPS directions is only one of the many features that are offer in this ThemeParkGPS App. Here is a description of the others features, coming from the App description.

FAMILY & FRIEND TRACKER: Want to keep track of the kids while letting them explore the Park by themselves? With ThemeParkGPS you will have peace of mind, always knowing where the kids are in the Park while still giving them their independence. Note that each person you are tracking needs this App downloaded to their iPhone.

IN-APP MESSAGING: Want to meet your friends for lunch in the Magic Kingdom? Need to remind them of your next FASTPASS time? Use this convenient App feature to send and receive messages...especially time-sensitive messages!

REAL-TIME MAP VIEW: Johnny needs to go to the bathroom...now! You are out of cash and you need to find the closest ATM. No worries! GUIDE GUY will locate you on the GPS Map, pinpointing everything that is around you, and lead you to your destination quickly and directly.

FUN FOODFINDER: Craving something special to eat? Want to find a restaurant in the Magic Kingdom that serves Chicken Tenders, Pizza, Carrot Cake or Baked Ziti, for example? With this unique feature, you can search for a place to eat based on any combination of 5 categories!

GPS VEHICLE LOCATOR: Ok, you've had a long, tiring day. Both you and the kids are getting cranky. Its dark and all you want to do is get the kids back to the hotel...and fast! Suddenly you find yourself wandering aimlessly in the parking lot looking for your vehicle. No worries. Follow our dependable GUIDE GUY and he will lead you directly to your vehicle!

In addition ThemeParkGPS gives you much more: You also get the latest information on Magic Kingdom's Attractions, Dining, Shopping, Special Events and Entertainment.

Sounds like a good app for someone who don't know well the park, isn't it? And the good news is that this GPS app cost $0.99 only on the iTunes Appstore! If you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, go ahead, you can download the App HERE.

AND, talking about iPhone Apps, i remind you the two great Tokyo Disney Sea and Hong Kong Disneyland Apps which include hundred of gorgeous pictures of the parks and that you can download HERE and HERE.

D&M Archives : A Special Alien Encounter - Stitch's Great Escape Tribute

When the ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter attraction opened at WDW some years ago it was quite an event. Not only it was part of a new re-themed Tomorrowland, but "Alien" was supposed to be a real frightening attraction, the first of its kind in a Magic Kingdom. Well, for the adult audience, it was really fun, and not-so-scary. But for the 12 years old young girls, the 3D sound ,the darkness and in-theatre effects were may be a little bit too scary!

No need to say that WDW executives didn't like at all to see these young girls exiting the attraction theatre crying, and this is probably why this brand new WDI attraction - that was supposed to be built in other Disney parks - remain the only one of its kind... Mind you, still in 1994, Tim Delaney, DLP Discoveryland show producer was still expecting to built it right at the entrance of the land where the room has been kept , on the little hill on the right, between the "Constellations" shop and Autopia.

Let's begin by some rare WDI artwork as well as official pictures of Alien Encounter.

We all know what happened next: the attraction was re-themed around the Stitch character and is supposed now to be less scary than before. On the pictures above and below, the difference between the two pictures of the same scene is interesting: on the Alien Encounter one the boys are yelling, but on the Stitch one, the boys are younger and smiling. The message is clear: no need to be afraid of this attraction any more, come on in!

Also, note the difference between the two photos of the pre-show sequence , with the small teleportation experiment. On the Stitch version, the S.I.R robot - one of the best programmed Audio-Animatronic i've ever seen - is now dressed in a more cartoonish look. But the really interesting shot above is the sixth from the top, as this rendering show a kind of pre-show "laboratory" scene that finally was never built...

And, last but not least, you may have noticed on the Alien encounter marquee that the attraction was supposed to be a " Sensory thriller from Disney AND Georges Lucas ". Why Georges Lucas was involved in Alien Encounter, you ask? Well, apparently, and if i'm right , it seems that the concept/idea of the attraction came from him during a meeting, and when Lucas have an idea, you better not forget that it came from him...which, i must agree is perfectly legitimate.

And now, on with the show, as below are the Youtube videos of the two versions. The two first videos show the pre-show and the show of Alien encounter and the two last one show the pre-show and the show of Stitch's great escape.

D&M Time Machine : WDW Magic Kingdom 1972

Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom opened October 1st, 1971, and LIFE magazine did a great issue on it - see cover above. So, today, let's go back in time one year later, in 1972, with this great home movie shot by the father of "asdTubeU". As he says on the Youtube video description: "My first visit to Walt Disney World was in October 1972. My father shot one roll of 8 mm film -- that's about 3 minutes of film -- of our visit (though I've cut out the family shots except for me interacting with a blinking Goofy).

In this silent digitized video (with music by YouTube's AudioSwap) of that film, you'll see: Topiaries in front of the Contemporary Resort on the Seven Seas Lagoon.

A sign for the "World Cruise" on the Seven Seas Lagoon & Bay Lake.

An outdoor band stage with Bambi's friends Flower and Thumper dancing.

The 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Submarines

Brief views of Frontierland, Liberty Square and Adventureland from near where Splash Mountain now sits, including a view of The Haunted Mansion which is no longer possible from the original Walt Disney World Railroad station in Frontierland. Of course, there was no Big Thunder Mountain either.

The river was drained during this visit, so there is no steamboat in the Magic Kingdom, but the burning cabin was ablaze, some of the scenes along the river are in place near the railroad tracks, the skyway's 90º turn is completely unobstructed and operating and the speedway has no Space Mountain next door."

Tiana's Showboat Jubilee begin at WDW Magic Kingdom

Tiana's Showboat Jubilee began October 25th at WDW Magic Kingdom, and the Showboat Jubilee begin as a parade in Frontierland. Then the performers, as well as 30 guests, board on the Liberty Belle Riverboat for the show itself.

Characters and music are of course inspired by those of Princess and the Frog including Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen, Dr Facilier and even Louis the Alligator playing trumpet!

You'll see the whole show below, with a great Youtube video in four parts, filmed by WDWRadio. The whole show looks good and i wonder if they will do it next year at DLP's Frontierland where we have not one but TWO riverboats - the Mark Twain and the Molly Brown - so they won't have the alibi to don't have riverboats to don't do the show!

If you liked the videos - which i'm sure was the case - have a look at WDWRadio where you can see lot of other great videos!

Amazing Magic Kingdom Tilt-Shift Video

Disney Parks released an amazing Magic Kingdom Tilt-Shift video. All the beauty of it is coming from the "miniature" effect. Everything and everybody on the video are real but it looks like a model that would have been animated in "stop-motion", the famous 1960's special effects technique. For those of you who wouldn't be familiar with the SFX technique, in stop-motion the object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence.

In fact, this great video was created from a series of photos snapped inside the Magic Kingdom Park by David Roark, manager of creative photography for Disney’s Yellow Shoes Creative Group. And if you want to discover how he did this incredible "miniature" effect i suggest you read his interview on the Disney Parks blog.

But first, let's have a look to this amazing video!

Buzz Lightyear Returns from Space to a Homecoming Parade at the Magic Kingdom

Do you remember that Buzz Lightyear was sent to space many months ago? Well, after 15 months in space onboard the International Space Station, Buzz returned to earth Sept. 11, 2009 aboard Space Shuttle Discovery STS-128.

Even better, Buzz Aldrin who was the second man to walk on the moon in July 1969, and the space ranger toy were joined Oct. 2, 2009 by ISS Expedition 18 astronaut Michael Fincke in a celebratory "homecoming" parade in front of thousands of guests at the Walt Disney World theme park!

Disney Parks and NASA sent the Buzz Lightyear toy into space in 2008 as part of an educational initiative to encourage students to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Welcome back, Buzz!

New high-res pictures of Dumbo, Little Mermaid and Star Tours 2 attractions

Walt Disney World released new high-res files of the four renderings for Dumbo, The Little Mermaid - by WDI artist Chris Smith - and Star Tours 2. I've posted before the high-res new Fantasyland artwork - by WDI artist Greg Pro - but i put it again here so you'll have the four on the same post. Click on each picture to see them in big size.

Note that the high-res file of the Dumbo artwork reveals interesting points about the Circus itself. If you look well, you can see an adult elephant inside the circus tent - will it be a real one or a big AA elephant? Also, the famous "fire in the house" sequence of the movie seems to be part of the circus show.

D23 EXPO Special Report by Andy Castro : The Future of Disney Parks and Resorts by Jay Rasulo

Here is a new article on all Jay Rasulo presentation saturday. Pictures were allowed during the keynote and Andy did his best to get pictures of everything that Jay Rasulo shown on the D23 Expo arena screen to the audience. I worked all day to enhance them and try to eliminate distortion effect. Although i can't guarantee that no distortion effect remain in the renderings below, i did my best. All my apologies to the WDI artists if it's not totally perfect. That said, let's go and have a closer look at this awaited "Future of Parks and Resorts" presentation.

Jay Rasulo confirmed that WDW Magic Kingdom will have its huge Fantasyland expansion - so big that it will double the size of the current Fantasyland! To have a better idea of how big it will be, click on the top rendering which is a high-res file.

The Little Mermaid is part of the new Fantasyland, and the biggest ride. The exterior theming will recreate Eric's castle, and have waterfalls and its own lagoon. Expect also a highly themed queue decor, before you load in the ride vehicle. The ride itself should be identical to the one currently build at DCA.

WDW guests - and specially little girls - will be able to visit their favorite Disney Princess in her castle, cottage, or chateau. Whether it will be to share a dance with Cinderella...

...or to see her being transformed right before your eyes.

.

Right next door, guests will celebrate Sleeping Beauty's birthday with the Good Fairies.

The Beauty and the Beast area will be one of the bigger one with Belle's village...

...where guests will join Belle in an enchanting story performance in the Beast's castle library.

Guests will have the choice to have dinner at the Be Our Guest restaurant in one of three enchanted rooms inside the Beast's castle...

...or at Gaston's Tavern.

The double-Dumbo ride is also confirmed and will be part of the new Fantasyland! Dumbo the Flying Elephant will be completely re-imagined. Guests will fly with Dumbo high above brand new circus grounds, twice the size of the existing attraction with a new interactive, three-ring circus tent.

The last addition will be the new Pixie Hollow area. Located behind the Little Mermaid area, guests will meet Tinker Bell and her friends.

Here is a video from Attractions Magazine of the Fantasyland announcement by Jay Rasulo.

The other big news was of course the official announcement of Star Tours 2 for 2011 at Disneyland and Disney Hollywood Studios. The ride will always use simulators but highly improved. In the ride visitors will board a Starspeeder and join a high-speed pod race through the desert canyons of Tatooine.

Storm Troopers and Darth Vader were there for what was the funniest part of Jay's keynote.

Here is a video by Attractions Magazine of this memorable announcement.

...and one of the clip itself.

Also shown during the presentation, new renderings of Cars Land scheduled to open in 2012 where guests will literally step into the town of Radiator Springs and its six acres of hand-carved rockwork. The vehicles will use a new generation of Test Track technology.

A short CGI clip of Radiator Springs Racer was also shown. Apparently it shows a scene at the end of the indoor part of the ride, before vehicles go outside for the final race. Here are some pictures by Andy and a video of the clip from Mint Crocodile.

Also, a video from TopChefRemy of the Lighting Mc Queen "Automatronic" that guests can see in the Parks and Resorts area. Actually, it seems that there is no mechanical or hydraulic elements involved in the making of this "Automatronic". The eyes are obviously a rear projection, but even the mouth is a projection effect! The effect works perfectly.

Jay talked also about Hong Kong Disneyland and specially about Toy Story Playland with new renderings, here they are.

Jay did not forgot the Disney Resorts and specially the Ko Olina on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Here is some new artwork.

Finally, Rasulo talked about the Disney Dream, the new ship being built by Disney Cruise Line. The new ship is currently built in Germany, here are some pictures.
